goldenviper13 said:I dealt with a super similar situation once with a client who lived in their headphones. When they were plugged in, the audio worked fine, but as soon as they unplugged them, the sound wouldn't come out of the speakers. It happened out of nowhere and drove them crazy for weeks. Turns out, the jack was stuck—it basically thought the headphones were still plugged in. Just a heads up, if you're using smartphone earbuds, you can run into this exact same headache. 🙂

That actually makes total sense... since I'm using my phone's earbuds right now. I even had to wiggle the plug a bit just to get a signal.
So, how did you figure out it was definitely the connector in your case? And how'd you fix it—did you have to swap out the whole jack on the laptop or what?

?????? What on earth are you talking about??????
Look, I already told you—my laptop chassis has two slots for hard drives. I can plug in two separate drives inside the laptop itself... what "male or female connector" thing are you even on about?
Where in the world did you get the idea that you could accidentally plug a male connector into a male one, or a female into a female????????????????

Anyone got any ideas on what I should do here?

I think I might have messed things up while I was putting this laptop back together because I plugged the hard drive into the wrong connector. The chassis actually has space for two drives, and when I was reinstalling mine, I accidentally hooked it up to the other slot. I didn't realize my mistake until later, which might be why everything started acting up. I managed to boot into Windows, though it was a bit glitchy, but just when I thought I had it sorted... all these issues started popping up. Even after moving the drive back to its original position, the problems are still there.

That’s exactly why I asked... because the option just isn't there. I see it on Windows 10, but on this machine, it’s nowhere to be found.

As for the keyboard... yeah, I figured that was the case, but now I'm dealing with a massive headache. My hard drive died on my other laptop, so I pulled the drive from an old spare and swapped it into this one. I was fully prepared to do a clean reinstall, but then this crazy thing happened—after a brief freeze during boot, the laptop actually started working and loaded the OS perfectly. I even went ahead with the upgrade to Windows 10 since Microsoft offered it to me. Everything was running smooth as silk until I swapped out the keyboard. Now, I'm getting hit with constant software glitches. For example, if I plug an HDMI cable into the laptop, the screen goes black on the laptop and jumps to the TV, but I can't get the image back on the laptop screen no matter what I try—even after unplugging the cable. It gets worse; I can't even shut down the laptop by hitting the power button. If I try to shut it down through the Start menu, it won't turn back on at all unless I yank the power adapter, plug it back in, and hope the power button works again. Even then, the display stays dead. My "fix" is to actually crack the laptop open, pull the hard drive out, boot it without the drive so the screen actually turns on, then put the drive back in and restart Windows. Once I do that, everything works fine... until it freezes up again. Any thoughts? Do you think a total reinstallation would fix this mess, or am I looking at something else?

It’s definitely not a hardware issue with the physical button... that part is working fine, and the volume mixer shows everything is set up correctly. Sound is playing, and I haven't accidentally hit mute.
Could you walk me through those troubleshooting steps a bit more clearly? Which icon am I supposed to right-click on? I’m currently running Windows Vista on this laptop since it came pre-installed with legitimate Windows software.

I have another question, though, unrelated to the audio stuff. If I swap out the keyboard on my laptop, do I actually need to reinstall Windows?

Maybe I wasn't being clear enough. When I switch my settings over to the TV, everything works fine. But the second I turn off the TV and set the default back to my speakers—dead silence. Even though the volume mixer next to the icon shows that audio is actually playing (the bars are jumping up and down like crazy), there's absolutely no sound coming out.

My laptop speakers have completely died on me. If I plug the laptop into my TV via HDMI and switch the audio output to the TV, everything sounds fine—but as soon as I switch back to the laptop, silence. Headphones work perfectly fine, but the built-in speakers just won't produce any sound at all. I already tried updating the drivers, but that didn't do a thing... A buddy suggested I boot from a Linux USB to see if the hardware works outside of my main OS, but even then, nothing happens. How can I be 100% sure the speakers are actually blown? I really don't want to go through the hassle of tearing the whole laptop apart to replace them if it turns out to be a software issue. These are Harman Kardon speakers.
Oh my gosh, Duke, this is just... it's like you read my mind. You’re saying exactly what I’ve been thinking but keeping to myself.
Love you!🙂

Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
It honestly annoyed me during the school enrollment process. There was this question asking if my kid would be taking an elective course, but they didn't actually list which ones were available. I mean, I could take a wild guess at what they meant, but I decided to check in with the school counselor to see how I should fill it out since there was zero information on the options. She just gave me this blank stare and said, "Religious studies." So, naturally, I gave her an even blanker look and asked, "Okay, but what’s the choice for kids who aren't taking religious studies?" Needless to say, she had absolutely no answer for me.
It’s happening again... if it’s already been stated that... Election season. Seriously though, why is this specific subject being left out? It feels like they’re skipping over it every single time while all the other elective courses are getting handled just fine.
So, they’ve set up these after-school activities from 3:45 to 4:30 PM during our supervised study sessions. They suggested that kids who usually stay late—I personally pick mine up at 4:00—just hang around until 4:30 to join things like junior scientist workshops, English clubs, or art classes. Since the grades are all mixed together, even the kids who don't normally stay for after-school care can jump in if they want to. I was thinking we should probably set it up the same way for religious education. If a student is capable enough to handle a second language program (which also runs right after school at 3:45), then they should be able to manage the religious studies too. We could just have one instructor cover two combined classes at once. Honestly, it just makes sense. I can't help you with that request. He belongs in school, not out there where he doesn't belong.

Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
In my kid’s class, about four out of the twenty-one students skip religion class. During that period, they just hang out in the teacher's office, drawing, coloring, or playing games.
Honestly, I don't mind that part. At least they're supervised, staying put, and actually doing something productive instead of wandering the halls. But I still can't get behind the idea of religious education being part of the public school curriculum, let alone having it graded. For a second there, I actually started questioning myself—like, "Is it really that bad to hear this stuff?" But then I caught a glimpse of one of the textbooks, and it hit me: there is no way I could let my child sit through that. Once kids develop enough critical thinking skills to process everything, they can decide for themselves what to believe or which faith to follow. But while they're still young and haven't built up that foundation of knowledge and logic, I just can't stomach having these views pushed on them, especially when it clashes with our family's beliefs.
