urbanhawk17 said:The whole thing with masks and the absolute idiots is just peak comedy.

I went to grab some groceries at the grocery store, and this guy practically breathes down my neck, standing inches away. Of course, he’s wearing a mask.

So I tell him, "Your mask doesn't mean much if you're still crowding everyone."

And he snaps back, "I've got mine on, so why don't you get one too and stop worrying?"

First off, he clearly doesn't get that the mask is supposed to protect me, not him. Second, he's actually part of the problem because he thinks having a mask makes him invincible, like he's Jesus Christ or something. Third, he couldn't care less if someone else gets sick; he only cares about himself.

Personally, I don't wear a mask. I just keep my distance from people—which, honestly, hasn't been bad for me—I don't touch things unnecessarily, and I follow the rules. Maybe even more than necessary.

I'm not really the type to join in on all this hysteria, but I'll play along until the end. The issue is that so many people don't follow any rules at all, and that's how you end up with a mess.

Here’s Roflić’s delivery, since you clearly can't just head down to the store to grab it yourself🙏

I don't need any, honestly—my pantry is already overflowing with Roflić snacks and coffee. Why don't you send some to little restlesssurfer97 instead? He's been suffering from that Barcelona obsession for years now.☕

Look, I’m basically your cure for times like this, because honestly, the longer you keep your hands clamped over your face, the less absolute nonsense you're gonna end up posting on here🤣🤣

Healthcare is a total disaster, and here I am hooked up to machines. 🤦

It’s honestly a waste of breath telling people not to touch their faces now that restlesssurfer97 is back on the forum 🤦

Why don't we just have the government hire everyone who gets laid off? That way, everyone stays employed.

Seriously, let's just go ahead and screw over the private sector—the very same one that, by the way, actually keeps the public sector running. ☕

Let’s try to find a way to avoid wrecking the private sector without throwing millions of people out onto the street at the same time. It’s a delicate balance, isn't it? We can't just dismantle everything overnight and expect people to survive. How are they even supposed to make a living if we pull the rug out from under them all at once? 🤣

William Kim said:Is the solution really just having the state blow money it doesn't even have?

No, the brilliant plan is for the state to hand out unemployment checks while private companies do the same. Because clearly, the best move is to leave the entire country unemployed just so we can "save" the private sector—which, let's be honest, won't actually save them anyway.🙏

Dammit, if you started handing out non-selective layoffs to a massive chunk of people right now (we're talking 50% of the public sector?!), all you'd end up doing is creating a mountain of social welfare cases that the government would just have to deal with all over again. People are stuck in isolation, they aren't even allowed to leave their houses, and now you want to slap them with a pink slip and strip away their financial stability? Seriously, what are they supposed to live on?

Paul Sanders5 said:Give me a break with all these conspiracy theories.

I’m really over this constant finger-pointing at everyone. Let me say this loud and clear—I've been saying it since day one: If you have people who actually *should* be isolating, right? Then punish them. From what I can see, the cops are out there checking if people are staying put; they can't monitor everyone 24/7, obviously, but they're doing the work.

As for everyone else? If I go visit some relatives, then:
1. I'm an idiot because I'm socializing.
2. My family are morons for not telling me, "Hey, beat it, don't come over."

It feels like we're asking way too much by expecting people to just take some damn responsibility for themselves. I keep bringing up my dad—he's in a high-risk group, 80+ years old. He went into isolation on his own; he doesn't want anyone visiting and he isn't going anywhere. He takes care of himself.

Then on the flip side, you've got people throwing parties and get-togethers. I'll ask two questions: yeah, the organizers are idiots—all five of them—but what kind of idiots are the people showing up to these parties? If someone called me to hang out right now, I wouldn't go. Not even because I'm scared of getting sick, but because it's just plain irresponsible. I don't need the government breathing down my neck to tell me that.

Well, not everyone thinks like you, Kenek. You can't exactly use yourself as the gold standard for everyone else. In this situation, even a tiny handful of irresponsible people is enough to spread the infection, and let's be honest—there are plenty of those types out there.

Matthew Young35 said:I work at a company with about fifteen employees.
The owner makes all the calls regarding layoffs.
For him, firing everyone actually seems like a viable solution.
He’s got enough cash stashed away to sit on his hands for a few years.
But as for payroll? He won't have enough for more than two or three months, and after that, he won't even have money for himself.

To him, handing out pink slips is a perfectly fine way to solve his problems.

So, is the real solution for the government to act just like him and start handing out mass layoffs? How exactly would that work?

urbanhawk17 said:I mean, cutting taxes would definitely give private businesses a boost. But then again, that's when the public sector takes the hit.

But we aren't going to see that movie play out.

Both sides are going to suffer regardless of which way you turn this. Look, I'm no genius when it comes to damage control, but handing out mass layoffs right now? That’s definitely not the answer.

Matthew Young35 said:Is it obvious to you that public sector salaries are paid using money taken from the private sector?
I'm asking silly questions; I'm sure you already know.

Look, this shouldn't be a situation where you're forced to pick between two different sectors, because letting either one collapse would clearly be a total disaster. And it’s definitely not a scenario where you just fire a massive number of people because "one side is struggling, so let's make sure everyone else struggles too."

Matthew Young35 said:The exact same way those in the private sector will manage when they lose their jobs.

Well, isn't the whole point supposed to be protecting those folks in the private sector too, rather than just throwing everyone under the bus?

urbanhawk17 said:And what about private companies?

And by extension, the public sector too?

If I actually had the answers to those questions, I’d be walking up to collect a Nobel Prize in Economics by now. But honestly, I’m pretty sure the solution isn't to just go out and wreck the public sector at the exact moment the private sector is stalling and failing to hire anyone. It’s not like the government doesn't have enough on its plate without adding a massive wave of new unemployed people to the mix.

Laura Chavez93 said:You've effectively crippled the private sector by making it impossible for them to function—and frankly, your subsequent actions only serve to continue that destruction...

Yeah, because clearly, Corona is just some massive conspiracy designed specifically to take down small businesses.🤣

Give me a break. Look, yes, this is a total disaster for the private sector, but let’s be real—it's a disaster for everyone, damn it.

Anthony Jackson2 said:Nobody thinks this is okay—only idiots talk about "natural selection" in a situation like this.

The measures need to be clearly, precisely targeted toward a goal, and enforcement should be as strict as possible.

But this specific measure lacks any clear objective or sense—it was just slapped together without rules, deadlines, or anything else...

Of course people are going to react badly to stuff like this.

It’s not like I’m trying to defend this administration. But I have to point out two things. First off, the situation is pretty unpredictable and unlike anything we've seen before, which demands a fast response—so yeah, naturally, measures are going to be slapped together haphazardly without established rules or timelines. Come on, is it even realistic to expect the government to have a perfect, pre-planned playbook ready for a simultaneous pandemic and an earthquake hitting Washington, D.C.? Second, a lot of people are going to push back against anything that messes with their comfort zone. Honestly, I think people need to show more patience with one another in general and accept that the next few months aren't going to look anything like our normal daily lives.

Everyone seems perfectly fine with a few thousand people dying, as long as those people aren't us, our families, or our friends. 🙄

urbanhawk17 said:Everything you said holds up. Maybe the only real difference is how people are acting. In Korea, they have this app where you can track where infected people are and how they move (I'm not sure if they're forced to use it or if they opt-in), like that famous case of the guy who was infected while attending a seminar on sexual violence. Meanwhile, Americans in Italy seem to be breaking quarantine just to act like fake tough guys.🤷

Setting aside the math on mortality rates, you don't need to be a genius to figure out which of these two scenarios is more likely to happen here.😁

EDIT:

Here's that link regarding Korea.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-private-lives

I heard back in 2015, Korea dealt with a MERS outbreak, and they actually used that experience to build out their infrastructure and protocols for stuff like this. It seems like they were actually prepared when COVID finally hit.
