Looks like I've finally made up my mind on the Dell monitor. Appreciate all the input from everyone 👍

wiredotter14 said:Mini DisplayPort shouldn't really be an issue for you; you just need to pick up a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or a decent dongle and you're good to go.
Since that laptop is packing a GTX 1060, there's a good chance the HDMI port is actually version 2.0. If that's the case, it should be able to handle the monitor at full resolution with a decent refresh rate using just a standard HDMI cable. No need to overcomplicate things.

I've spent enough time with this monitor to form an opinion. It’s solid. The curve isn't some aggressive, eye-straining thing, which makes it actually decent for productivity. If you're looking for a single-monitor setup and you really value horizontal screen real estate, I’d give it a thumbs up. That said, there's a catch. If your workflow depends more on vertical space—you know, scrolling through long documents or code—you’re probably better off just grabbing a standard 32" 1440p monitor. Those things are significantly taller, giving you more total surface area overall. With these ultrawides, you end up with less actual screen space because of that wider aspect ratio on a smaller diagonal. It's one of those trade-offs you don't realize until you're staring at your desktop wondering where all your windows went.

If you've got options, honestly, you'd be much better off hunting down an IPS panel. This specific model just doesn't cut it—the viewing angles are pretty disappointing, and the backlight bleed is noticeable enough that light leaks out from the corners of the screen. It’s just not ideal.

For actual work, this is probably the better, higher-quality monitor.

I was scrolling through some listings earlier and stumbled upon this Dell monitor. It’s one of those mid-range panels that sits right in that weird middle ground—not quite high-end professional gear, but definitely more than just some cheap office screen you'd find at a discount warehouse. Looking at the specs, it seems decent enough if you aren't asking too much from it. It’s got that standard setup you'd expect, though I always find myself wondering why certain brands push these specific configurations when a slightly better version is usually just a few bucks away. It’s fine, I guess. It does the job. It reminds me of those endless debates we see on tech forums where people argue over whether a slightly higher refresh rate actually matters for everyday tasks. Honestly, unless you're trying to win a professional gaming tournament or doing high-level color grading, most of us are just looking for something that won't give us a headache after eight hours of staring at spreadsheets or code. This fits that "functional" category perfectly. Nothing flashy, nothing revolutionary, just a tool.

Thanks. Honestly, at this point, your username has been around here just as long as mine—if not longer. 😁

I mean, I don't think it should be an issue. I was just curious if the Mini DisplayPort is capped by resolution or by the refresh rate.

Yeah, I was looking at that Dell monitor too because the IPS panel caught my eye, but the only downside is that it isn't curved. 🙂

My eye keeps twitching. It’s driving me a little crazy. I was browsing through some hardware listings earlier and stumbled upon this specific monitor setup. It’s one of those things that looks straightforward on paper, but when you actually start digging into the specs, you realize how much the market has shifted toward these ultra-wide configurations. It’s an interesting piece of kit, though I can't help but feel a bit cynical about how many "premium" features are just marketing fluff these days. You see these high refresh rates being tossed around like candy, and while they aren't useless, I often wonder if the average user—the person just trying to get through a workday without their eyes bleeding—actually cares. Probably not. Most people just want something that won't break the bank and looks decent on a desk. I saw a comment from Jesse Sanchez4 regarding similar panels recently, suggesting that the color accuracy on these mid-range models isn't quite where it needs to be for serious design work. They have a point. If you're trying to do heavy lifting in Adobe Illustrator, you might find yourself reaching for a professional-grade Dell display instead of saving a few bucks on something like this. But then again, for general productivity? It’s fine. It does the job. It’s just one of those items that sits in that weird middle ground: too good for a basic office cubicle, but maybe not quite robust enough for a dedicated creative studio. Still, it's worth keeping an eye on if you're looking to upgrade a home office setup without feeling like you've been robbed by big tech.

It’s a bit pricier than the Xiaomi option.

It’s pretty wild to see that The New Guy has been tirelessly helping people hunt down the right gear for over six years now. Mad respect. 😁

I'm looking to pick up a monitor for my laptop setup (running an i5-7300, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB of RAM). It’s got both HDMI and Mini DisplayPort inputs.

I was leaning towards grabbing a 34" curved monitor. I won't be using it for heavy gaming or running anything too demanding, just general use.

The first one that caught my eye was the 34" Xiaomi Mi Curved v2, 144Hz, 4ms—that would definitely fit into a decent budget...

If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know. Also, just looking for some reassurance that the Mini DisplayPort connection shouldn't give me any trouble. Thanks.
Any VPN recommendations? in IT Support ·
Hey there,

I'm looking for some advice on finding a free VPN that doesn't have those annoying usage limits and can give me an American IP address.

Right now I've been messing around with Hola, but they basically force you to sit there watching a timer—you get 30 minutes of access and then you're stuck waiting another 30 just to keep going. It's a massive headache.

Thanks

Looking for some advice on an all-in-one—something that can handle printing, scanning, and copying. I’m leaning toward an inkjet since they seem way more cost-effective in the long run. My usage would be pretty light, maybe just a few pages of text once a week or even once a month. Ideally, I want something where the ink isn't going to break the bank. Something in the same ballpark as an Epson EcoTank printer. Thanks.

Hey everyone, I just finished putting together a new rig (running a 1080ti sc2 and a Ryzen 5 1600) and now comes the inevitable part: picking out a monitor. Right now, I'm stuck using a Dell U2414H, so I'm looking to upgrade. My goal is to hit that 144Hz sweet spot, preferably at 1440p resolution or higher. I’ve always felt like 24 inches might be a bit too small, though I’ve seen people online arguing that 1440p on a 24-inch panel is basically a waste of pixels. I haven't quite decided between an IPS or a TN panel yet, either. Mostly, I'll be using it for gaming—stuff like Dota 2, PUBG, and so on—so having G-Sync support is a must. Budget isn't a massive dealbreaker, but I'd like to stay somewhere in the $600 to $800 range if possible. Thanks in advance. 🙂
Internet issues in IT Support ·
My internet has been absolute garbage for the last two days. Pages take forever to load and the connection just keeps dropping out on me. I finally decided to reach out to AT&T, and this was their response:

"We can see that the cause of your connection drops is an increase in both download and upload traffic. If you are intentionally running high-bandwidth activities, we recommend limiting them. This type of traffic can be caused by torrents, Dropbox, online gaming, or data syncing to iCloud/Google Drive. Best regards."

I find it hard to believe that any of those things are actually causing my speed to tank like this. Does anyone have any idea what’s really going on?

What would you guys recommend for my graphics card, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or AMD Software: Crimson Edition?

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. 2 third party drivers have been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

atikmdag.sys (ATI Radeon kernel mode driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.)
atikmpag.sys (AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination with the errors that have been reported for these drivers. Include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions on the web by users who have been experiencing similar problems.

If you want some broader advice on how to tackle these kinds of system crashes, you should probably check out the general troubleshooting guide here.

Just a heads-up: you can't always be 100% sure if a specific driver is actually the culprit or if some other module is pulling the rug out from under you. That said, it’s usually worth checking for driver updates from the manufacturers, and honestly, just keeping Windows update running or set to automatic is pretty much standard practice. If you suspect a hardware component is acting up, try doing a quick Google search using the specific bug check error code alongside your PC's brand and model. It might give you a better lead on what's actually going wrong.
Hey everyone, I’m running into a bit of a headache trying to track down the right drivers for my graphics card: the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080. I'm currently running Windows 10 64.

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/su...ml#down-driver

Looking at their official site, all I can find are drivers listed for Windows 10 32. I tried downloading those, but I just get an error saying they aren't compatible with my system. Any ideas? Help me out here. 🙂
Help picking a monitor under $300 in Computer Peripherals ·
I actually got stuck on that monitor while I was scrolling through the threads; honestly, it’s a steal at that price point. But then again, I think I might have talked myself out of it. I’m leaning toward something in the 23 to 25-inch range instead. Maybe the pixel density will be better on a smaller screen for what I'm paying. What do you think? 🙂

Got any smart recommendations for $667? Maybe something in my late 20s or even a bit younger? Ideally something local to Cleveland, assuming I can't just order it from overseas.

I forgot to mention that this is actually a setup I'm looking to pick up from a buddy of mine, so I'm trying to figure out what a realistic price tag would be for the whole bundle.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Hey everyone, can someone give me a ballpark idea of what this setup is worth right now:

CPU: Intel i3 3220 @ 3.30GHz
Mobo: Intel DH77EB
RAM: 2x 4GB Kingston Fury KHX 1600 DDR3
GPU: R6870 TWIN FROZR II/OC 1GB GDDR5
