I was out hiking in the Sierra foothills last weekend, and I found myself sitting on a granite outcrop just staring at the landscape. It’s one of those places where you feel incredibly small, not just because of the scale of the mountains, but because of the sheer age of everything around you. You look at a tree that has been standing there since before most civilizations even had a concept of written history, and it gives you this profound sense of continuity. But as I sat there, looking at some of the blackened, skeletal remains of patches that were scorched a few years back, I couldn't help but feel this weird, gnawing anxiety about how we manage the "wildness" of the world.

We have this deep-seated, almost primal psychological aversion to destruction. In our minds, "nature" is supposed to be this pristine, untouched sanctuary where everything grows in peaceful harmony. We see smoke on the horizon or hear the crackle of flames, and our immediate, visceral reaction is fear. We think of catastrophe. We think of loss. We think of the end of something beautiful. Because of that, our entire approach to conservation and land management has historically been built around the idea of prevention—of keeping things "safe" and "contained." We want to build walls, we want to suppress every little spark, and we want to keep the chaos at bay.

But lately, I’ve been thinking that our very desire to protect things might actually be the thing that destroys them. It’s a massive paradox, isn't it? We try to preserve a state of "perfection" that doesn't actually exist in nature. By trying to stop the small, necessary disruptions, we end up allowing the massive, uncontrollable ones to build up until they become unstoppable. It’s like trying to hold back the tide with a plastic bucket; eventually, the pressure just becomes too much, and when it breaks, it breaks everything.

It makes me wonder about our relationship with control. We live in a world where we are obsessed with mitigation. We want to mitigate risk, mitigate damage, and mitigate change. We want to freeze time. But if you freeze time, you stop the natural cycle of renewal. I look at the massive, ancient giants in our forests, and I realize that their strength isn't just in their ability to endure; it's in their relationship with the very things we fear. They are built for a specific kind of struggle. If we take that struggle away, we might actually be making them more fragile.

There’s a certain arrogance in thinking we know better than the ecosystem itself. We decide what is "good" and what is "bad" based on our own comfort levels. We see a small blaze and call it a disaster, whereas the land might see it as a cleaning process, a way to clear the floor so new life can breathe. If we keep treating every instance of "uncontrolled" activity as an enemy to be defeated, are we just setting the stage for a much larger, much more tragic defeat down the line?

I’m struggling with the ethics of "interference." On one hand, if we do nothing, we're being passive observers to a slow-motion disaster. On the other hand, if we step in and intentionally introduce "chaos" to prevent a greater catastrophe, are we still preserving the "wild," or are we just turning the wilderness into a highly managed, artificial garden? At what point does "stewardship" turn into "manipulation"?

I’d love to hear what you all think about this. Do you think our instinct to protect and prevent is actually counterproductive to long-term survival? How do we reconcile our fear of destruction with the reality that some level of destruction might be necessary for life to persist?
Greetings, everyone,
I would love to get some expert advice to help me finally make a decision. You all were so helpful when I was picking out a machine for my eldest daughter two years ago, and now it is my second daughter's turn...
Essentially, I am looking for a laptop for schoolwork, learning Microsoft Office, watching movies, and she will likely want to play a few games. Based on my experience with my older child, cheaper laptops aren't exactly built for gaming—unless you have nerves of steel and a lot of patience! I am not looking for anything extreme, but I want something that will last her about three years without me needing to worry about upgrading to something faster. I'll handle the replacement once she hits high school.
Since the laptop will mostly stay at home rather than being carried around constantly, I have been looking at a 17-inch model...

Thank you all in advance on behalf of my daughter and myself!!
Wild Tales: The Omnibus Collection in Movies ·
I have to agree with Jack Murphy; this movie feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s one of those stories where you can easily see yourself in almost any character... my only lingering question is how they'll pull off the execution. 🙂
Watching this actually inspired me to dive deeper into South American cinema. If you're looking for something similar, here are a few recommendations I enjoyed:
The Hidden Face
The Body
The Secret in Their Eyes
In my opinion, "The Secret in Their Eyes" is the weakest of the bunch, but it's still definitely worth your time.
Best budget laser printer for 200 pages per month? in Computer Peripherals ·
Yes, you’ve correctly identified that they are laser printers.
Just keep in mind that manufacturers almost always underfill the starter toner (the one included in the box with the printer); it usually only contains about 50-70% of what a standard toner cartridge holds. It really depends on the brand...
In all my years of running a business, I’ve found that the least amount of trouble with budget compatible toners comes from using Orink brands. I haven't tested every single third-party option out there, but of those I have tried, they are certainly the best.
Of course, when you opt for compatible toners, there is always a slight risk of causing more mess inside the machine, particularly affecting the Fusing / Fuser Unit, but given your projected print volume, I don't think you need to worry too much.
How often do you actually need a fax? In my four years of business, I’ve only needed one about ten times. Almost everyone has transitioned to communicating via email these days.
Personally, I much prefer a printer with WiFi capabilities. It frees me from being tethered by a cable, allowing me to move around different rooms with my laptop quite easily.
I wouldn't recommend going with color. Most affordable laser printers come with those poorly filled starter toners I mentioned, and buying standard replacements (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) usually costs more than the printer itself, which sends your cost-per-page skyrocketing. The exception would be high-end color A4 printers where the toner is very cheap, but those are typically purchased by mid-to-large corporations that require high color volumes but find an A3 device too bulky.
So, your choice boils down to either a monochrome laser MFP or a color inkjet MFP.
If you don't have a genuine need for color, stick with a black and white laser. If you ever need to print letterheads in color, it’s easy enough to have them printed professionally elsewhere, leaving you to print only black text at home.
Anyway, I wish you the best of luck!

Frank Barnes said:Has anyone actually verified the ink quality? Perhaps the manufacturer could weigh in? We recently had three of those Brother printers come into our repair shop with >>original<< inks. Every single one of them had a completely clogged black line.

There is absolutely no way to fix them. It's a total 100% disaster. Interestingly enough, we managed to clear the Cyan Yellow and Magenta channels on all three units.

This suggests that either the original black ink is defective, or the construction of the black channel isn't designed to handle the specific quality of ink being supplied to the US market. If you have any doubts about my assessment, I’d be happy to give you one of those three Brother printers for free. It feels like a waste to toss them since the scanners still work perfectly—and since you mentioned they aren't chip-restricted, they are still useful.

So, let's revisit the question: What exactly are you basing your claim on that the inks are verified? Is it just hearsay?

My respects to ADRIATIX!
There is really no need to adopt such a condescending tone; I was simply sharing my own firsthand experience and my discussions with an authorized Brother service center. There were no restrictions at all regarding using third-party inks in these devices, even though the distributor themselves sold them. Since there is a two-year warranty, plus an extra year granted through registration, there is no reason to fear service issues—provided, of course, that you take the unit to an authorized Brother service center.
I have a counter-question for you: Are you actually an authorized Brother service provider? It’s an interesting question, wouldn't you agree?

We can go back and forth on this as much as you like, but I think it's best if we move this to a private message.
The gentleman asked a polite question for advice, and I felt I had every right to provide my perspective based on my experiences, without needing to attack other participants in this thread.
It's just you and me now, but I remain more than willing to help others. Goodbye, ADRIATIX.

You might want to check out the Brother models over at Best Buy. They offer a two-year warranty, plus you can get an extra year just by registering the device online. I've personally found that there are plenty of high-quality third-party inks available for them, and I haven't run into any issues even when taking them in for service—it's as if the distributors themselves actively encourage using those compatible inks during sales 🙂.

Peter Perez75 said:Why is Sevilla being undervalued by the bookies? I’d play them for $xy, but I'm feeling a bit hesitant—I really need this money to work out...

Sevilla always seems to find a way to scrape through and pull themselves out of the mud in the second leg... but here, there is only one match to play. 🤣
I think I'll pass on this one. I would love to see Benfica finally break their curse, but at the same time, I'd love to see the Rocket lift the trophy... so, no bet from me.

Eric Fox7 said:I realize we're talking about a cup competition here, which is usually something you’d want to steer clear of, but I honestly feel like this bet offers some serious value. 🤷

The round of 16 for the domestic cup is finally upon us, and the matchups are looking quite interesting! Los Angeles FC from Washington, D.C. Who exactly is currently in such terrible form? They’ve hit a rough patch with four consecutive losses—all covering the handicap—and if you look at their last eleven matches, they’ve managed only one win, three draws, and seven defeats. On top of that, they’re sitting in 14th place on the table, which puts them right on the edge of relegation. Baltimore Orioles Which team is actually in peak form right now? They've racked up nine straight wins, including one directly against today's opponents—back when the Baltimore Orioles dominated 3-0 in Washington, D.C. They are currently sitting in fourth place, just a single point away from a spot in the Champions League.
I personally feel that Los Angeles FC is much more focused on their battle to stay up in the league than they are on this cup match, whereas I’m fairly certain the visitors have more than enough quality to walk away with a dominant victory.
Even though the odds on the 2 are quite respectable at around 1.90, I’ve decided to go with the handicap at 3.30 instead. 🤷
There are two matches on the schedule, but my gut tells me the visitors will try to settle everything right away in that first game.

Best of luck to anyone following along! 👍
🙂

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Baltimore Orioles lately, and I think they should pull this one off. At the very least, I'm looking at a straight win, though I’m feeling optimistic enough about the spread to aim for a handicap cover. Either way, I'll be watching closely and keeping my fingers crossed for them. 🙂

Given the friendly match lineup on today's schedule, I thought I'd propose a little experiment:
Messi to score @1.45 — he’s looking to chase down Gerd Mueller's record, so he'll be hungry.
Dzeko to score @2.30 — honestly, who else could step up when we have a diamond like him on the field?
Huntelaar to score @2.30 — word on the street is RVP is sitting this one out, which puts the entire offensive burden on his shoulders.
Falcao to score @2.70 — all eyes are on him to break through what is, frankly, a rather lackluster Brazilian defense.
Suarez to score @2.70 or perhaps Lewandowski... I am still weighing my options there.

What does the rest of the community think about these picks?
Thanks,
