Is it just me, or is "unspoken" becoming the default?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much we rely on these vague, unwritten understandings in our daily lives. You know the feeling—when you assume someone is on the same page as you, or you think there's a certain "deal" in place, only to realize later that nobody actually agreed to anything. It’s that awkward moment where you realize your mental map of a situation doesn't match the reality everyone else is operating under.
It happens in friendships, it happens at work, and honestly, it happens in almost every weird social dynamic I've encountered. I remember a few years back, I thought I had a solid grasp on how a certain group of friends operated, only to find out I’d been totally misreading the room for months. It’s exhausting trying to navigate those gray areas where nothing is ever officially stated, but everyone acts like it's common knowledge.
Do you think we're getting worse at just being direct with each other, or has it always been this messy to navigate social expectations?
