It’s because Amino isn't working on FlexShop... I honestly still don't get why this is even an issue. These guys at Flex aren't suggesting anything illegal. If Hong Kong weren't so damn far away, I'd just order my stuff from eBay and have it sent to one of their local shipping hubs to pick up in person. But it's never convenient.

This feels like being told you can't let Alex confirm a receipt at a border crossing in rural West Virginia just because you might end up getting a tax refund from the folks in Maryland.

Sam Roberts said:You should probably take that letter from FlexShop down before some Customs agent gets their hands on it. 😁

Why all the panic? Even if he does read it, what’s the worst that happens? When you cross the border, you just show him the receipt, and he'll let you through since you're under the limit anyway. $333Look, I don't see the issue here. Telemarketing isn't illegal anywhere, and that’s exactly what this boils down to: you buy it, they ship it, and you receive it. It’s a standard transaction. Maybe you should just drop Flex Shop an email and suggest they pull the listing from their site, just so their customs agents don't catch on to the fact that they're handling exports.

It isn't a direct comparison, per se, but they are weighing the PWM against various ratios of chocolate milk containing sucrose versus Surge, which leans heavily on glucose... and most importantly, they arrive at a conclusion that actually benefits the general public—something that absolutely infuriates any major supplement manufacturer in this country.

Here is an article from Lyle McDonald's blog where Argon breaks down the glucose versus sucrose debate in terms of PWM/U.

What exactly is the core question you all are bickering over? It would make this much easier to follow. If I’ve grasped the situation correctly, we're debating whether consuming sucrose in a PWM is a preferred choice (Achilles) versus opting for dextrose (No Pain). Or have I completely misread the room?

Look, guys, everyone needs to just calm down for a second... maybe go start a separate thread about sugar intake for athletes if you want to debate that. This space is specifically for protein 😬

Joshua Adams said:What kind of actual benefit is there if you're just mixing it with water or milk? Honestly, just take whatever you think works best. Even if some fancy study comes out claiming water is superior, someone is still going to stick with milk just because they prefer the taste. It all comes down to personal preference; people should just decide for themselves.

The practical issue is this: if you're constantly mixing whey with water, you have to consume a higher volume just to hit your daily protein targets. You end up drinking more often, buying more frequently... it's a constant cycle.
Best protein powders for muscle gain? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
It’s all quite obvious, really... yet everyone seems to swear by this whole whey plus water routine, which strikes me as nothing more than a blatant marketing gimmick. In my estimation, most of these supplement companies survive solely on clever advertising or studies performed on mice. Anyway... I’m off to bed before my cocoa protein turns into belly fat.

I always mix my whey with milk... honestly, drinking it with water is just unpleasant, and I couldn't care less about those supposed three extra seconds of faster absorption.😬
By the way, does anyone have a link to actual scientific data regarding absorption rates? Everyone seems to claim mixing it with water is superior to using milk, but it feels like they're just relying on some pseudo-scientific logic... the idea being that water has zero calories, so it absorbs quicker and so on. I am genuinely curious if anyone has actually tested this (though I have no idea what kind of methodology they would even use).

Oh, great, my bad... I’ve actually been thinking about dextrose this entire time... No idea why I got so hung up on fructose... just pure grapes and whey, I guess.
Best protein powders for muscle gain? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
Since I’m already mixing my whey with milk anyway... we're looking at lactose (which breaks down into galactose and glucose) plus fructose... that's what I was getting at. Otherwise, if I just add sugar to the milk, I still have the lactose, but then you add sucrose, which effectively triples the glucose intake... or am I missing something here?

goldencyclist60 said:I haven't been following closely. Personally, I’m a big fan of Lyle McDonald's work and Alan Aragon's. Much like them, I advocate for demystifying nutrition through a much gentler, more nuanced approach—one that's ultimately healthier.

I’ve been reading Lyle McDonald, and I followed Aragon for a bit... but he posts to his blog so infrequently that I actually removed him from my e-reader...

Alex writes relatively short pieces compared to Lowe's, but he puts them out almost daily. He’ll grab two or three studies, include the links, and piece together a potential conclusion. Sometimes those conclusions are quite open-ended—he even admits when things are inconclusive—but generally, the content is solid.

Anyway... back to proteins. 😬

I'm currently reading an article about how fructose and glucose affect recovery. Honestly, the whole site is excellent, even if the design looks like it was built a decade ago. It got me thinking... if the optimal combination is glucose plus fructose, should I just toss some white sugar into my whey shake? Or should I aim for something like the glucose from milk (via lactose) paired with some grape juice from Disney? ;-)

goldencyclist60 said:Why on earth do people label sucrose as UNNATURAL? Fructose is perfectly NATURAL—if anything, it’s more so than many other sugars out there. There really isn't any reason to be terrified of it, especially if you maintain an active lifestyle. Physical activity has this inherent ability to balance out and mitigate much of the nonsense we ingest through our diet. In those cases, you actually need it (glucose is fine too, but it's pricier and less efficient, so 😁 )

Look, I’m not saying it’s unnatural. But the reality is that most Americans consume far more sugar than they even realize... and it’s not just from candy or soda; it’s baked into all that "regular" food we grab on the go. That’s why I feel a bit uneasy adding another 30 grams of sugar if it isn't strictly necessary. It's not like I'll drop dead instantly... but if I can avoid it, I will.

By the way, I was browsing through your blog for a bit... it sounds good, but it lacks actual data to back up your claims. I don't know if you follow sweat science blog by Alex Hutchinson; he writes similar pieces, but he always links directly to various studies.

goldencyclist60 said:hehe, you actually NEED sugar after a workout. if you aren't loading up on it, you're basically sabotaging your own recovery. all you really need are protein powders; mass gainers are nothing but a total scam where you pay a premium just to get sugar disguised as protein. my sincere advice? stay far away from them. if you want to pack on size, just eat more throughout the day. no mass gainer on earth is going to do that work for you.
There are two types of glycogen: muscle and liver. Muscle stores are much larger, but don't overlook the liver stores—they play a significant role in your performance.

That is exactly what I am getting at... I never had any intention of buying gainers anyway. To me, they sound just like that junk food I was thinking about smashing... basically just enough protein mixed with a mountain of crap... but the price tag is absolutely ridiculous, so I don't waste my money on them...

So, you're telling me it's impossible without sugar? Ugh... and as for a natural alternative to stupid white sugar... honestly, I try to avoid it as much as possible because I already eat way more junk than I probably should. :-)

goldencyclist60 said:Protein powders are actually the most cost-effective protein source, provided you know where to shop. Otherwise, regular milk or chocolate milk are solid choices. And there's no need to buy specialized glucose supplements; standard sucrose (table sugar) is just as good, if not better, since it breaks down into a 1:1 ratio of glucose and fructose. Unlike glucose, which exclusively replenishes muscle glycogen, fructose helps fill up liver glycogen reserves.
In short, 🙂

I personally prefer chocolate milk after a long run. There are plenty of studies showing it's effective for post-workout recovery... honestly, I have no desire to chug stuff loaded with extra glucose when there's already too much of it everywhere else... and powders aren't exactly cheap. I mean, sure, those pure protein ones are one thing... but when I look at things like mass gainers where you pay $200 for a 2kg tub$100 and then realize you only get about 8 servings because you have to mix 3 scoops with milk just to hit 300-500 calories, it's madness... it doesn't even last a week... I'm not exactly a high-profit athlete.

Regarding this fructose and liver glycogen point, I'll have to look into that further... is it somehow detrimental or what? Because I usually carb-load before something like a half marathon specifically to top off my glycogen stores... so that's exactly my goal. Unless this liver aspect negatively impacts performance. As for proteins and other supplements, I take them strictly for functional capacity and muscle recovery for future training... bodybuilding isn't my interest.

Here’s a link for you: www.gladiator.com
Give them a ring; they have plenty of stock, and I'm certain they'll get back to you.

Thanks for the link, but I’ve already checked their site twice and the layout is an absolute mess... it turned me off immediately. And look, I’m one of those weirdos who actually scrutinizes labels—I even check the nutrition facts on a $0.46 pudding cup. A phone call won't mean anything to me until I've researched everything down to the last detail.

Don't even get me started on those so-called "friends" who have massive tubs of whey protein sitting in their cabinets but suddenly become too busy to answer a single text or call...

besides that, I've got plenty of whey on hand... I just have no clue what else to mix it with.

I am curious if anyone here has experience DIY-ing a supplement based on whey protein that also includes a significant amount of carbohydrates. Specifically, I want to know what else I could add besides just dextrose... or is that sufficient? My reasoning is simple: I want to be able to whip up a shake specifically for carb-loading to fuel activities like long-distance running, mountain biking, rock climbing, or whatever else comes up. I was thinking of using a protein base, essentially turning it into a homemade mass gainer—something in the ballpark of 15-20g of protein and 45-60g of carbs, with a tiny bit of fat. I have absolutely no intention of wasting money on pre-made commercial products; buying them is just not cost-effective in my opinion.
