Before summer rolled around, I decided to try out some treats from a local bakery in Seattle, and I have to say, they were absolutely delicious
everyone at the office was raving about them, too
so, if anyone here is currently staring down the barrel of wedding cake selection and needs a recommendation, there's your answer
I don't recall the exact pricing, though
Here’s a quick shot of the cake we made
http://img39.imageshack.us/i/tortauo.jpg/I honestly have no clue what the price tag looks like for either Orient or Piece of Cake.
A colleague mentioned she had pastries from a local bakery out in the suburbs at her wedding; maybe see if you can talk them into letting you try a sample box first.
I think they might even throw you a discount if you bundle their cakes and pastries together.
Oh, right—we actually tried the cakes from Slast. "Piece of cake" is a bit of an understatement; I thought they were delicious!
The reason we didn't go with them was because they usually put chocolate or something more structural on the bottom tier, which limits what you can layer on top—like a parfait or whatever. Since we wanted the whole thing to be parfait, we ended up going with Monika instead.
A friend suggested the "Orient" cakes from Slast, but they don't really do tiered cakes. Your options there are basically just getting several separate cakes; they’ll make one larger one for slicing and then you have the others sitting off to the side.
Yeah, regarding the pastries—I tried some from the local bakery, and they were honestly nothing special.
To be fair, I’ve also tried much fancier stuff priced at $33 per pound, and I wasn't any more impressed...
It’s hard to know what you're actually paying for; even those overpriced treats costing over $15 were pretty underwhelming.
At the end of the day, nothing beats the homemade stuff made by moms or aunts... the kind I ended up bringing into the office to share, or dropping off for the guys at the coffee shop where I grab my morning caffeine before work.
Honestly, what she did was totally uncalled for. I know it sounds a bit petty of me to complain, but frankly, she can just deal with it herself.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around this logic, though—I was told that if we were catering for a crowd of 150, we’d use a tier setup of 25"/25"/20". For 110 people, it would be 20"/18"/14". But instead, she’s planning to make a cake for 100 people using a massive 18" base, and then making all the upper tiers just 4 inches smaller than that...
Ah...

She messed up again—not sure what her deal is lately... I’ll have to bring it up with her, though she probably thinks we went with Monica instead. Her orange chocolate cake was actually a hit with my husband, he loved it.
We won't be getting around to fixing that until sometime next year.
Which flavors did you guys pick up?
Two layers were chocolate-orange, and one layer was a Milka parfait, which is also seriously good.
That chocolate-orange combo is a total winner!!
Even my husband, who isn't exactly a huge sweets guy, ate our wedding cake with those flavors and enjoyed it so much it was actually pretty sweet to watch!
😍
Personally, I have a major sweet tooth, so I could honestly snack on this cake every single day.

Cute!
😍
We actually showed the baker a picture of a cake like this too (plus another one), except we wanted ours cut into squares!

And did they hit you with the old price or the new one?
I don't have any photos yet... I'm still hunting through my friends' and relatives' camera rolls to find some good ones.
What’s the new price versus the old one?
For us, $4.00/slice
charged us based on the fact that we ordered a cake for 100 people, but then they claimed the cake turned out slightly larger than expected, so they tacked on an extra $10 or so. Honestly, we didn't even bother arguing about it because there was more than enough cake to go around, and it really was delicious.
Monika’s Bakery in Samobor—absolutely incredible cake! Both the presentation and the flavor were spot on.
My mom and I were beyond impressed... honestly, about 90% of our guests were asking for seconds!
😉
We picked up the rest of the pastries at Absum in Karlovac—we were really happy with both the quality and the price!
I’d say about a third of a pound of cake per person should be plenty for the reception—so we're looking at roughly 35 to 45 pounds total if there are 150 guests attending.
Now, if you're planning on sending people home with treats, you'll need to adjust your math. For instance, if you're doing little gift boxes for couples—say, a 12-ounce box for a friend and her husband—you'd need an extra 45 pounds of cake just to cover 75 pairs.
Of course, I'm not planning on handing the wedding party a measly 12-ounce box; I'll be picking up much larger containers for them, probably around two pounds each, to make sure they feel properly appreciated.
