I was thinking about this the other day while watching some old game footage. In the world of high-stakes sports, we always seem to talk about "redemption arcs." We love a good story where someone hits rock bottom, makes a massive mistake, and then works their way back into the good graces of the fans and the league.
But it makes me wonder where the line actually is. Is there a point where a person’s professional reputation is permanently stained, regardless of how much "penance" they serve? I see it all the time in coaching and management—people get a pass because of their talent or their connections, but then you see someone else get phased out of the industry entirely for a similar lapse in judgment.
It feels like the "revolving door" of employment in pro sports is more about optics than actual accountability sometimes. Does a person ever truly get a clean slate in this industry, or are we all just waiting for the next slip-up to confirm our biases?
Do you think professional leagues are actually getting stricter with personal conduct, or is it all just performative?
