Well, I never officially lived abroad, but I definitely spent seven more years working overseas than I did here! Once high-speed broadband finally hit the States, everything changed for me.

I think one of the main reasons is that everyone can just pretend to be "Somebody," even if it isn't actually true.
I only really started diving into these online communities about two weeks ago. Mostly, I just pop in to look for answers to specific things, like how to fill out an application for a dorm at a state university or something along those lines.
Hmm. Yeah... it’s honestly pretty uncomfortable when someone starts attacking you just because you shared an opinion or made a joke. But then again, someone mentioned that people are just wired that way and there's nothing you can do about it—whether it's on Reddit or in real life.
I'm not taking this particular thread very seriously because it feels like people are just casually tossing out opinions and stances because something happened to catch their eye.
But obviously, on a serious topic—like, say, my kid has asthma and I need advice on how to manage it—I'm certainly not going to post nonsense (though I'm sure there are still people who would)
So, I have to ask—especially you, Roger Sanders3—do you come to these forums mostly for the discussions, the fun, and to unwind, or are you looking for actual, serious information?
Honestly, it’s almost always for work. Most of these sites are pro communities for my field. I actually joined a few months back—can't quite remember when—mostly because I wanted to chat about things I can't really bring up in person. I realized pretty quickly you can't always do that here either (shout out to the exceptions!), but I wasn't expecting much more than that. I don't have much free time to hang out online, so I'm rarely around anyway!

Basically, I'm talking about English-speaking places—the USA, Vegas, Australia, and quite a bit of Scandinavia. I might be overgeneralizing a little when I talk, since I've mostly just bounced around those areas, but there are still huge differences in the fundamentals.
It would be so cool to see how this forum might work if we split it into three main modes: help, discussion, and chat!
Mistybison, sorry, but there's no way! If someone actually told me to my face that I was total garbage, I wouldn't just ignore them—I'd definitely have something to say. Honestly, though, I highly doubt he'd even have the guts to say it to me in person.
Look, I’m not entirely sure if the same social rules apply here as they do in real life, but alright... I honestly think a lot of people here wouldn't be quite this bold or throw around so many colorful insults if we were talking face-to-face. I'm talking about how people communicate, not their profiles.
Personally, I usually just ignore stuff like that, though sometimes I’ll jump right into an argument just to give someone a taste of their own medicine—it’s the least they deserve.
I feel the exact same way about Italians as you do, but I can't say for sure about Finns... I’m mostly thinking about the English-speaking world since I spent most of my time there, and the things I'm mentioning are just facts, not something up for debate. Seriously, I’d have to work pretty hard to find a moderator who tosses out insults, let alone a super-mod who actually lets them get away with it!
Look, I honestly don't know what to tell you. I just know that I've been called everything from trash to absolute filth—just a collection of colorful insults—only on domestic forums like this one. And all because I’m a bit shy, reserved, or maybe just because I disagree with someone. The kicker? I realized later that even a moderator was getting in on the action, something that would get someone banned instantly on any serious US site. It’s right there in black and white; I’ve never experienced anything like this out in the real world.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of that "I'll act however I want here" attitude. That's basically what I was trying to get at—I get the feeling people nowadays apply that exact same logic to their entire lives and how they communicate online. It's not right to expect sensitive people to just take off because someone else wants to act however they please, especially since those folks are often the ones who rely on forums like this as one of their few places to find actual help.
As for the difference between staying local versus moving abroad, obviously, how much you like it is subjective and depends on a lot of things. But I think we can all agree that it's going to take us a long time to reach the social standards that have been the norm overseas for ages. Personally, I always feel way more comfortable talking to people from other countries, whether it's online or in person—which, frankly, is a bit sad. Mostly because there's a language barrier, but also because this is where I live now, and it's honestly a bummer that I'm constantly living in the past of the time I spent abroad.
Honestly, most of the sites I hang out on are specialized international forums. It’s rare to find one that tries to cover everything... And look, don't get me wrong, you'll always run into idiots, trolls, and know-it-alls everywhere, but there's way less of that, and the overall quality of conversation is on a whole different level compared to what we have here. Just Google "forums" or whatever fits your interest, see which ones feel more professional, and dive in there!
If this one is supposed to be the "tame" one, then imagine how bad the others are! That's not even hard to figure out—just head over to Reddit or some big mainstream US message boards and read the threads... It's just like someone else mentioned here: it's all just endless chatting and trolling. I honestly don't know if a serious, normal, or tolerant discussion ever actually happens.
The only thing I know for sure is that the older I get, the more I find myself leaning back toward that rebellious teenage mindset: things are just better out there. It used to apply to everything, but lately, when I talk to people from abroad, I notice we're becoming much more similar economically and politically—it's almost like they're describing life in America. But the real difference is how people allow those pressures to affect them and how they treat one another.
While over in the West, people who are grinding through mortgage payments and dealing with nightmare bosses don't necessarily take it out on everyone else in online forums once they get home, that's just not the vibe here. People actually let their life circumstances shape their personalities and bleed into their daily interactions, even affecting how they view diversity in their own circles. Then you get that cycle of "if everyone else is cutting corners, why shouldn't I?", "I won't be the only sucker," or "everyone's mean on these forums anyway, so why take it seriously?" It's a vicious circle that ends up breaking down individuals one by one.
Of course, there's also the cultural mindset at play, which is just what it is, but that's a whole other conversation. A lot of people claim that "mindset" is just a myth and doesn't exist, but after everything I've seen, I truly believe it does. Personally, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else but America, but the truth is, I can barely hold a conversation with the people here, and I worry we're reaching a point where the worst parts of our nature are being brought to the surface.
I honestly can't wrap my head around why people don't take this forum more seriously. It’s just a virtual community—that's how they describe it on most international sites—and just like how you act responsibly when interacting in RL, you should do the same here. I've been hanging out on US newsgroups and international forums for ten years now, and if I had taken those places too seriously, I wouldn't be where I am today!
I think you can see the difference in mindsets really clearly on these boards. That's why I rarely visit local American forums. Someone actually said this place is one of the "tame" ones, and honestly, that's the scariest part of the whole thing! People here just have a totally different view of written communication online; they seem to think it's all just one big game.
If that were the case, imagine the chaos if people acted that way on Healthline or a tech help desk!
A forum is basically a perfect snapshot of what society looks like. There are things I've experienced on American forums that I haven't seen once in ten years on international ones. That’s what really hurts—the fact that you can't always ask for help or have an honest talk about a personal issue in your own backyard, so you have to go halfway across the world virtually just to find someone to listen.
Anyway, awesome topic, bravo mistynomad5!
