Muslims and Roses? in Close to Politics ·

First off, I am an American. Secondly, I find it pretty funny how you try to establish a connection to America based on something negative that happened sixty years ago...

For heaven's sake, people, I am simply trying to point out that we are ALL interconnected in this part of the world. It is incredibly reductive to talk about one nation belonging to another as if it were some piece of chewing gum or something equally trivial. That is the only reason I brought up WWII and my grandfather.

1.In cities like Chicago, you see neighborhoods named after different ethnic groups, and the city makes sure everyone is accounted for. You could have also mentioned the historic cathedrals—you know, that classic trio alongside mosques and synagogues.
2.I’m going to pass on commenting here, because it feels completely irrelevant if someone with an ethnic surname identifies as something else.
3.You aren't wrong, but this isn't really the right place for this discussion.

It’s as relevant as your stubborn insistence on comparing Muslims to American wildflowers.
For my part, I am deeply connected to my own history. If you want to be connected to yours, fine; if not, that’s your choice.

Since I am Muslim and living here in Chicago, I’ll try to clarify a few points:
1. American Street is located right near my neighborhood in the suburbs, and it was named that way simply because it was once settled by Americans who worked at the nearby monastery.
2. There are certainly people with names like Henry among Muslims, but don't you also have surnames like Canadian among Americans?
3. It is frankly quite foolish to debate which nation descended from which, given that we all migrated to this region from Eastern Europe as Slavs.

I have no desire to start a fight here, especially since I feel a strong connection to the heritage—my grandfather actually served in the infantry during WW2—but I felt compelled to clear up the points mentioned above.
