The movie is stupid—honestly, I don't think it could be any more brainless. Everything from the actual plot to how it was put together is just... meh.
But hey, that’s exactly where you see all of Arnie's massive greatness and charisma shine through! He takes this totally moronic script and some pretty uninspired directing and somehow turns it into a cult classic—I mean, it's easily one of the best action flicks of the 80s (and honestly, ever)!
For me, the absolute best scene in the whole thing is when he's rowing...😁
That first half was absolutely insane! Seriously, if only Božo wasn't such a total fanatic rooting for FC Barcelona...
Man, I’ve sat through this movie twice now—basically "wasted" over six hours of my life watching the exact same thing—and honestly? Zero regrets. When it comes to adaptations of Stephen King's work, "The Shining" definitely ranks as one of the absolute best. I remember reading somewhere that this flick is basically a guaranteed tear-jerker, which might be why I went into it with such massive expectations. My only gripe is that they leaned way too hard into Duncan's gloominess... by the time you hit the end of the movie (which is really when it matters most)
his sad little faces felt a bit much—kind of pathetic and not super convincing if I'm being real. Plus, the soundtrack could've been way more impactful; I mean, give me some violins that actually make me sob! I can't help but feel like if a different director had stepped in, this would've been even more legendary. But hey, even as it stands, it's still awesome.
What do you guys think though: does the sci-fi element of King's writing deserve such a huge role here (especially since the ending leans into that vibe)? Like, would the movie have actually been better without the sci-fi stuff, OR is that exact sci-fi twist what makes it so incredibly good and unique?
