Is there any chance a pregnancy test could return a false negative if the woman is currently breastfeeding?

I'm wondering if the hormonal shifts during lactation might somehow interfere with the accuracy of the results...?
My little one is five months old, so I doubt I'm pregnant, but my mind won't stop racing. I took a test, yet the uncertainty persists.
If anyone has insight into this, I would be grateful. 😉

Also, does anyone know how much progesterone can impact hCG levels?
My baby was 8 months old at the time, and since I was breastfeeding, I actually got positive results on my first, second, and third tests... It's definitely possible for a test to be falsely negative due to a hundred different factors—like if it isn't your first morning urine and you've been drinking tons of water, which dilutes everything, or if ovulation happened later than expected. As far as breastfeeding goes, it's more likely to just throw off your cycle rather than trigger a false result.
Are you feeling any other symptoms, or is it just that your period is late?

Or maybe I just caught a cold and it's messing with my cycle... any idea what symptoms I should be looking out for to tell if I'm actually pregnant?

You might experience pregnancy symptoms like sore or swollen breasts, being extra sensitive to smells, nausea, mood swings, possible twinges in your ovaries, needing to pee more often, dizziness, or feeling tired and having a faster heart rate. Everyone is different, so you don't necessarily have to feel all of them, but you might.
It sounds like your cycle isn't perfectly regular, so it's not unusual for your period to be late.
Look, like the title suggests, if you're worried, just go grab a pregnancy test (you should already have one from $10, which would show a result if this is the same situation, though I honestly doubt it) or just make an appointment with your doctor.
In my opinion, the chances of you being pregnant are pretty slim.
Good luck, I hope everything turns out exactly how you want it to. 👍

I'm going to call the pharmacy, and maybe the pediatrician too...

thanks.

Let me know what they say... good luck!!

Here’s what I would do: give your pediatrician a call and let them know you've got this cream on hand and ask for their take on it. Or, since it's the weekend, just ring up any local CVS or Walgreens—they really ought to be able to tell you if it's safe to use while breastfeeding. Honestly, try not to stress too much. About 99% of medications come with a warning saying "don't use while nursing," but usually, that's just a legal disclaimer so they can cover themselves in case of side effects. Most of the time, it isn't actually a huge deal. Just call a pharmacy right now while they're still open so you can get an answer and finally relax...
Good luck.
Lawrence Perez4 said:Is it actually possible to experience something resembling a period during that first month of pregnancy? To be honest, I am feeling completely turned around by all this... I’ve been dealing with every symptom in the book—and just to clarify, these weren't all in my head since we aren't even actively trying for a baby yet—but I didn't grab a test right away because I thought I'd just wait and see if my cycle was going to be late. It ended up being delayed by maybe two or three days, which is pretty standard for me, but when it finally arrived, it was incredibly light—way more subtle and significantly less painful than anything I've dealt with in the thirteen years I've had my cycle. Usually, it feels like a total war zone with heavy flow and intense cramping, but this one just sort of drifted by quietly. And now that it's over, I'm still sitting here with these lingering little symptoms and just feeling... off. Does it sound totally ridiculous to go ahead and take a test just to put these doubts to rest, or is there really no chance that I could actually be pregnant???

If you're having unprotected sex, there's always a chance you could be pregnant.😉
Just go grab a test so you can stop stressing yourself out. Pick up the cheapest one at a CVS or Walgreens and just get it over with. There's no point in agonizing over it—if you are pregnant, regardless of what you decide to do next, you'll need to see a doctor anyway... and if you aren't, at least you can finally relax.
Wishing you the best, whatever you end up needing.🙂
Linda Hall8 said:Ladies, I am begging for some guidance here... so, I went ahead and took a pregnancy test this afternoon, even though my period isn't actually due for another two days, but I just couldn't help myself, I really couldn't :-)... and the test showed two lines, though, if I'm being honest, the second line in the pregnancy window wasn't quite full or super distinct like the instructions say it should be—it was more of a faint, subtle thing, sort of (=) like that.. does that actually count as a positive, or am I just getting my hopes up too high? Because, well, we desperately want a baby, but we haven't had any luck at all lately, and I remember taking a test from this exact same brand a few months back where there was absolutely nothing in that second window, which turned out to be correct since I wasn't pregnant then... so, I guess, if anyone out there has dealt with something similar, could you please let me know what you think...

If I were you, I'd just hang tight for a few more days. Once you're actually officially late (which I really hope you are!), try the test again.
Fingers crossed for you!
Kenneth Howard2 said:The bleeding finally stopped. I’m thinking it was just some irritation from the exam, so everything seems fine now. I've got a little bit of light yellowish-white discharge going on, so now I'm just waiting to see if my period shows up or not.😍

Fingers crossed that nothing goes sideways...😍
Good luck! 👍
Kenneth Howard2 said:So, here’s the situation: I went to my OBGYN today because I’ve been feeling all those early pregnancy symptoms—tender, swollen breasts, darker nipples, some pelvic pressure, mild nausea, fatigue, and even a slight fever.
I won't get my period for another 6 or 7 days, so I haven't bothered with a pregnancy test yet; it would just be a waste of money at this stage.

During the ultrasound, the doctor spotted two corpora lutea and mentioned that I actually had two ovulations this cycle. Naturally, at this point, you can't see much else besides those two large corpus luteum structures. (I have a genetic predisposition for twins, so having two ovulations isn't exactly rare for me.😍)

Now, once I got home, I noticed this strange yellowish-clear discharge along with two drops of blood. It feels like it could be implantation bleeding, but part of me is worried it might just be the start of my period or maybe something caused by the exam itself. Could that be it?
It's only day 19 of my cycle.

Does anyone have any insight into what this might be? I want this baby so badly that I’m already overthinking everything.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.

How did everything go? Has the bleeding finally stopped? Just a heads-up—it’s pretty normal to experience some spotting right after an exam, but you really shouldn't be seeing anything heavy or frequent.
I totally get where you're coming from—I actually went through the exact same thing and thought I was dealing with a false positive myself😂😂
but honestly, just go grab an Alphabet test so you can be 100% sure about what's going on...
Which test did you end up using?
I'm asking because I totally spiraled last time—I saw a positive result when I wasn't actually pregnant at all... 🤦
I used a Clearblue, and it showed two lines (instead of the little plus sign), and since I’ve been burned by those cheap drugstore tests before—where any two lines mean it's a "yes"—I just assumed it was positive. I went straight to the doctor to get my hormone levels checked via an Alphabet test, but of course, everything came back normal... I only had such a massive panic attack because I was having such a hard time focusing enough to actually read the instructions properly. 😂
It wasn't until a few days after the whole ordeal that I finally realized Clearblue specifically needs to show that plus sign... I honestly laughed until I cried at how much of a dummy I was being.
My advice? Give it another five days and then take one more test. Try to do it first thing in the morning, regardless of what you did the day before. If it still comes back negative by then, go see your OB-GYN. Sometimes changes in discharge can be a sign that something else is going on, especially if pregnancy isn't the cause. But if it actually turns out positive, you should still make an appointment with your doctor just to be sure.
I don't mean to sound like I'm preaching here, but my husband and I were very cautious with our timing, and look how it turned out—now our little guy is sleeping like a baby in his crib. 🙂
Tyler Ruiz502 said:See, this is where I’m getting tripped up—I keep running into claims like the one above (honestly, mostly just here on this forum, nowhere else I've looked), even though the "official" textbook version is that ovulation occurs exactly 14 days before your next period arrives. In plain English: Fourteen days.

So, if someone has a 30-day cycle, ovulation should hit on day 16, right?

But based on what Klara (and several others) are suggesting, it sounds like ovulation could happen on day 10 or even day 22, yet the period still shows up perfectly on schedule on day 30? —Am I following the logic here, or am I totally missing something? 🤷

Hmm... interesting.

Yeah, technically ovulation should occur 14 days before your period. It can definitely be delayed, but if that happens, your period usually gets pushed back too...
But then you have that method from Jonas (if that's his name) which claims the exact opposite. That theory suggests it doesn't have to be exactly 14 days, but could happen any time during the cycle—meaning a woman could be fertile any day, even during her period. To me, that doesn't make much sense, but since people actually have ended up pregnant using that method, I’m honestly stumped. 🤷)
If I were you, I’d just hang tight for another week before taking another test. If it still comes up negative then, go ahead and get a blood test done just to be absolutely certain... good luck! 🙂
So, if both little boxes only showed one vertical line, that means the test is negative? Man, I can't believe I wasted a few days stressing out over such a silly mistake. 😵😵
(And that was with a fancy test 😁). Thanks, Morgan Evans3, you really helped clear up my confusion.
ruggedhawk182 said:What does the instruction manual say? I always stick to the budget brands, so I honestly have no clue how these fancy ones work...🤣

I ended up in the same boat, which is exactly how I got myself worked up... The test showed a plus sign, but I couldn't find any information online about what it means if you only see one line—like, does it mean it's negative, or is it still technically a positive? Maybe the line was just incredibly faint and I didn't look closely enough at the test itself. The real issue is that I started bleeding the very next day, and when I had my blood work done three days later, the HCG level was less than 0.6. Now I'm just sitting here wondering: was that actually a positive result that just happened to be an early chemical pregnancy, or was it a negative all along and I just stressed myself out for nothing?
Hey guys, I have a quick question (it might sound a little silly, but I’m just stuck 😁)
I used a Clearblue test, and it showed two vertical lines. I wasn't really looking out for it needing to show a "+" sign since I'm more used to those cheaper brands, so I figured if there were lines in both windows, it meant a positive result.
So, does anyone here have experience with this? Is it only considered positive when it shows a "+", or could mine have been positive and the line just didn't show up clearly? (I took the test right on the day my period was supposed to start).
Thanks so much! I tried searching online, and apparently, there are some versions that just show a line and others that show a "+", but I'm not sure which ones are actually sold here in the States. If anyone has had a similar experience or knows the deal, I'd really appreciate it 🙂
Michael Lee5 said:I've heard people say a test might give a false positive if there's even a tiny trace of blood in your urine. I think I read that somewhere else on this forum... I mean, it seems pretty unlikely, but I think someone was quoting their OB-GYN about it.

It’s definitely possible. In my case, the test initially showed a plus sign, then I had some spotting, and right after that—on the very same day—the test came back negative. The only way to make sense of it (and I really don't want to admit that an expensive test could have been wrong 😁) is that it was a biochemical pregnancy that just resolved itself. If I hadn't taken the test, I probably would have just assumed it was my regular period. Instead, I went through all this stress and panic not knowing what was happening, only to find out in the end that nothing was there. But honestly, it doesn't matter much now; I was just caught off guard.
James King9 said:Hit the OBGYN yesterday. Still nothing on the ultrasound, so I’ve gotta head back in on Monday.
Just a heads up, I haven't even done a home test yet. Doc told me I need to wait until Monday morning to do that.
I'm definitely grabbing a Clearblue or an Intim this time. I heard those cheap drugstore ones are super sketchy—my coworker actually had one show a positive, then a negative, then a positive again before it turned out she wasn't even pregnant!

Maybe I just went in too early? If my ovulation timing was right, I should be about 5 weeks along by now. My cousin didn't see anything on her scan until she was 6 weeks.

Everything seems fine, but my period has never been this late before. Usually, it's maybe 2 or 3 weeks tops, once or twice a year. This time, I'm sitting at 36 days late...

Yeah, the wording is a little confusing. Regarding the tests, I don't think the brand matters much unless you're specifically looking for one designed for early detection, which doesn't seem to be the case here based on what you wrote. This month, I was absolutely convinced I was pregnant right after ovulation; I took a Clearblue test on the day my period was due and it was positive. But then I had some spotting the next day, took a cheap drugstore test, and it was negative. I even had my blood work done yesterday and it came back negative, so according to my doctors, it wasn't a pregnancy. I couldn't afford the fancy tests back then anyway. Just pick up a mid-range one and take it in the morning. As for the pregnancy itself, when was the first day of your last period? If you are truly 36 days late, a pregnancy really should have shown up on an ultrasound by now. In my experience, everything was visible by the 7-week mark counting from the start of my last period. Unless there's a typo in how many days you're late, there shouldn't be any error on the ultrasound.🤷
