Toxic "motivation" in the workplace
in Psychology ·
I was reading about some corporate culture drama the other day, and it got me thinking about how thin the line is between "high-performance culture" and straight-up psychological abuse. We've all had those bosses who think a little healthy pressure or a bit of public embarrassment is a great way to drive numbers up, but there's a massive difference between a stern meeting and something that feels genuinely humiliating.
It honestly feels like some management teams have completely lost the plot on what human dignity looks like. When you start treating employees like props in some twisted motivational stunt, you aren't building a team; you're just creating a culture of fear and resentment. I worked at a retail spot a few years ago where they’d make us stand in a circle and "confess" our mistakes to the group, and it was just soul-crushing. It didn't make us better at our jobs; it just made us want to quit.
At what point does "incentivizing performance" cross the line into being a liability for the company? Have you guys ever worked somewhere where the "team building" or "motivation" felt more like a punishment?
