Is it getting weird with these massive sports sponsorships?
in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I was watching some highlights last night and it hit me how much the landscape of sports has changed. It used to be just local breweries or airlines on the jerseys, but now it feels like every single team is tethered to massive, multi-year global energy or tech conglomerates. The sheer scale of these deals is getting a little dizzying to keep track of.
It honestly makes me wonder if the "soul" of the game is being traded away for pure revenue. I grew up watching teams with much more local, community-driven connections, and now everything feels like a giant, polished marketing machine designed to squeeze every last cent out of a global audience. It’s hard to feel that grassroots connection when the sponsors are these massive, faceless entities that most fans will never interact with.
Don't get me wrong, the money keeps the stars playing, but does anyone else feel like the commercialization is starting to outpace the actual sport? At what point does a club stop being a club and just become a walking billboard for a multinational corporation?
