Always having issues with Microsoft Word :) in Software ·
I’d like to apologize in advance if this comes across as a rather foolish inquiry, but I find myself completely unable to locate a specific option within the interface. I am currently working in Microsoft Word 2003, and my objective is to implement page numbering, yet I am struggling with the logistics of how to ensure the numbering actually commences from, say, the fifth page. It is my intention to leave the initial few pages unnumbered, but despite my efforts, I simply cannot grasp the mechanism required to achieve this. I am well aware of the "don't show number on first page" setting, but that is entirely insufficient for my needs, as I require the exclusion to apply to several preceding pages.

I actually just downloaded it myself because the K-Lite Codec Pack wasn't quite cutting it when I was trying to stream those high-quality brrip movies, but honestly, this setup puts way less strain on my RAM, so I find the software perfectly fine.

Sometimes a clean reinstall of the codec can actually do the trick, 🙂

No, that's not it at all; I'm talking about that m2v player which is absolute garbage, yet somehow remains useful simply because it’s the only thing that actually renders the picture correctly for me.

How is Windows Media Player 12 treating you on Windows 7?

@slyrider20 - Are you running into similar issues when you're watching HD or Blu-Ray movies?
For those specific formats, you really ought to look into different codec packs, like CoreAVC.
If you decide to grab one, I’d suggest hunting it down via a torrent site, because if you try to go through official channels, you’ll likely end up stuck without an installation key anyway.

Well, I just sat here and tested the video on Windows Media Player, and frankly, the picture looks terrible in full-screen mode. It seems like the m2v player is the only thing keeping the image somewhat decent when I expand the window. 😕 Personally, I would stick with it since it works, but the software is riddled with these incredibly irritating little glitches—errors, I suppose?—that drive me absolutely mad. Why is it that even our most preferred programs insist on being such a massive headache? 🙂

Does anyone happen to know how to adjust subtitle positioning in the m2v player? (In VLC Media Player, you just hit Shift plus the left or right arrow keys)

No, I never bother watching movies on physical DVDs; I just download AVI files around 700 MB.

Harold Taylor6, I really don't have the patience to uninstall everything and start over right now, especially since I'm not even certain that doing so will actually solve anything...

The subtitles themselves are fine, but once I hit full screen, the picture quality just falls apart; it looks blurry, lacks any real clarity, and I am at my wit's end trying to fix it.🤷
I've already gone through the trouble of downloading the latest ATI drivers and the K-Lite Codec Pack... absolutely nothing has made a difference. Are you experiencing this same issue?

Harold Taylor6 said:I had this exact same headache and just couldn't find a fix... I ended up switching over to VLC Media Player, which honestly seems even better than VLC Media Player (which is starting to feel pretty subpar lately)

Well, look at that—I tried using VLC Media Player too, and I'm hitting the exact same wall! Did you deal with that blurry image issue as well? If so, how on earth did you manage to clear it up?
The only way the picture looks remotely decent is through my m2v player, but let’s be honest, everything else about that specific program is just terrible.

Harold Taylor6 said:Look for "video Rendeless" (or something similar) under the video settings, then switch it over to blabla9—I can't recall the exact name, but I know there's a number 9 involved 😁.

Alright, I found it, made the change, and it actually worked.
The problem is, the picture quality is just terrible; it's blurry, lacks any real clarity, and looks completely pixelated. Is there some other setting I can tweak to fix this, or is it simply an issue where things just won't run properly on Windows 7 regardless of what I try? 🤷
When I use a different player, the image looks great—exactly how it ought to look—but frankly, I'm not a fan of that software or its other features. I want my VLC Media Player to work the way it’s supposed to. 🙂

Fair enough, though if you want my honest opinion—purely subjective, of course—it doesn't really do it for me, so I am still hoping for some more suggestions. 😉
Does it actually handle special characters properly for you when it comes to subtitles? What kind of encoding do you usually set? It seems to me like there isn't even an option for Western European encoding on that thing.

Yes, I’ve actually already started a thread regarding VLC Media Player, but I simply cannot get the damn thing to function properly.
The image quality is just incredibly blurry, almost as if it isn't playing nice with Windows 7. It becomes particularly glaringly obvious when, for instance, I attempt to adjust the audio levels—the "volume" overlay looks completely washed out and lacks the clarity it should have.

My question is this: which media player do you all actually use that meets the following criteria:

- It absolutely must run smoothly on Windows 7
- It needs to handle subtitles and standard US character encodings without a hitch
- It is highly preferable that it doesn't come bundled with viruses or spyware 😠 (because, frankly, everything over at warez-bb GOM or those old VLC Media Player builds is always riddled with malware)

For example, I downloaded this m2v player, and it behaves in the most bizarre fashion; first off, it forced my Windows 7 interface back to a basic theme, and secondly, I can't for the life of me get the video file to restart from the beginning. When I hit stop—not pause, mind you—and then select play, it just resumes right where it left off. At least the picture is sharp, unlike my former favorite, VLC Media Player.

A fresh headache has emerged. It is truly unbelievable 🤷

I have reverted once again to version 2.44 after testing two other iterations, including the most recent beta release. Now, I am faced with a complete lack of video; there is audio, certainly, but the screen remains blank. Even after installing the K-Lite Codec Pack, and despite the fact that VLC Media Player spends several minutes during its installation process deploying its own specific codecs, the issue persists. My patience is wearing incredibly thin 😲
I am requesting assistance 🙂

My brother uses it, but frankly, it does nothing for me. It lacks the necessary encoding support for my subtitle files, and quite honestly, I find the user interface to be rather unappealing.🤷

Another headache, I am honestly getting sick of BS Player!
After finally managing to get the installation finished and the registration sorted out, I’m being hit with this nonsense: whenever I open a file—which does play, mind you—it immediately throws up an error message saying, "There was a problem sending the command to the program." It’s incredibly frustrating because sometimes that little warning window just freezes right there, taking the entire folder containing the file down with it! On top of that, I can't even load subtitles half the time... So, 🙂 I think I'll just try a different version. What a cursed week. 😠 Has anyone else dealt with this specific mess? How did you manage to fix it?

Oh, and another thing that’s driving me up the wall: why does it ask me for permission to launch BS Player every single time? Is there really no way to just set it as the default and stop the constant questioning?
Best media player for Windows 7? in Software ·
Indeed, the issue stems from the compression software as well, which is why I've switched over to 7-Zip. But even then, nothing is quite right. It refuses to unpack properly, so I ended up just opening the archive directly and launching the installation from within it. While that actually worked, it birthed an entirely new headache. Now, it won't accept the key I generated via the keygen because it claims "this folder is not writeable"! WTF, this is all because of Windows 7. Eventually, I lost my temper and just deleted the whole damn thing. Does anyone have a solution for making a folder writable so I can move past this?
Best media player for Windows 7? in Software ·
I have downloaded three entirely different versions, all compressed in archives, yet not a single one will even begin to unpack; my WinZip just keeps spitting out error messages left and right. Is it possible that this is some sort of incompatibility issue stemming from Windows 7? I am quite fond of BS Player, as it provides such a pleasant experience when watching movies, especially given how well it handles subtitles and everything else.
I went ahead and installed some alternative software, but frankly, I am not thrilled with the results. Are any of you actually finding that any version works reliably on Windows 7?
Unplugging devices from the wall in Miscellaneous ·
placidjackal36 said:Only during lightning storms or if there's some serious voltage instability. Or honestly, just whenever I'm heading out of the house for an extended period. The power draw in standby mode is practically negligible.
The surge is basically the same as when you plug a device into the wall, so it shouldn't be an issue at all.

I haven't actually made a habit of doing that myself, but since it’s a room I barely spend any time in—sometimes I'm only there for maybe two days a month—it makes sense to do it.
Plus, I've heard plenty of people swear by the idea that it really does save on the electric bill.
Unplugging devices from the wall in Miscellaneous ·
This topic really falls under the "everything and anything" category 😁

I recently picked up one of those power strips equipped with an on/off switch. I have my TV, a cable box, and a DVD player all plugged into it. Naturally, I never actually turn the TV or the cable box off; they just sit there in standby mode indefinitely. Since I now have this convenient little switch at my fingertips, I decided to be a bit more conscientious about my electricity usage, so I’ve started frequently cutting the power to the entire strip via the switch—primarily because even devices idling in standby consume a measurable amount of juice.
Now, I find myself wondering: could this habit actually be detrimental to my electronics? Should I be worried that the sudden interruption might cause some sort of electrical shock to the components and lead to a premature death for my gear, or should I simply disregard such concerns and keep flipping the switch?
For instance, the moment I flip the strip back on, the cable box boots up immediately.
Is my anxiety justified here, or am I just overthinking things? 🙂

On a side note, do any of you actually shut down these kinds of devices just to save a few cents on the utility bill?

I have been subscribed to quite a number of threads for over a year now, following them with absolute regularity. In the beginning, I had set my preferences to 'instant e-mail notification,' though I eventually found the constant pings rather tedious and switched the setting to 'no email notif.' However, that change naturally only applies to any future threads I might subscribe to, which brings me to my current predicament: how am I supposed to stop receiving notifications for the existing threads I am already following? I have no desire to deal with an overflowing inbox, yet I fully intend to remain subscribed to these discussions so that I may monitor them via my user dashboard 😁

I find myself increasingly vexed by the frequency with which this forum terminates my session; I cannot say precisely how much time elapses before it occurs, but the constant need to re-authenticate my credentials is becoming a genuine irritation, as I feel compelled to log back in "every other minute," if you will. What exactly is the underlying cause of this instability, and is there any possibility of adjusting the settings so that I might remain logged in indefinitely, or at least until I make the conscious decision to sign out myself?

Arsene, you might have gone a bit overboard there, though I do appreciate the arguments you laid out.
My thanks to the rest of you as well.

As for myself, I probably take maybe four 500 mg Tylenol tablets a month. And even then, it’s strictly reserved for those instances where I’m nursing a headache after a night out, or when my sinuses start acting up—I deal with chronic sinus issues, and frankly, if they flare up, I simply cannot function. Tylenol does the trick, and I am quite certain that taking something once a week isn't going to cause me any harm.
