Best media player for Windows 7?

I have downloaded three entirely different versions, all compressed in archives, yet not a single one will even begin to unpack; my WinZip just keeps spitting out error messages left and right. Is it possible that this is some sort of incompatibility issue stemming from Windows 7? I am quite fond of BS Player, as it provides such a pleasant experience when watching movies, especially given how well it handles subtitles and everything else.
I went ahead and installed some alternative software, but frankly, I am not thrilled with the results. Are any of you actually finding that any version works reliably on Windows 7?

Indeed, the issue stems from the compression software as well, which is why I've switched over to 7-Zip. But even then, nothing is quite right. It refuses to unpack properly, so I ended up just opening the archive directly and launching the installation from within it. While that actually worked, it birthed an entirely new headache. Now, it won't accept the key I generated via the keygen because it claims "this folder is not writeable"! WTF, this is all because of Windows 7. Eventually, I lost my temper and just deleted the whole damn thing. Does anyone have a solution for making a folder writable so I can move past this?

I don't know about all that; you might want to hold out for someone who actually knows their way around this stuff better than I do. Have you considered just downloading WinZip 3.90? It's the latest version available.

Folder settings: try changing the ownership, give your user group full control, or just run the installer as an admin... those are a few ideas to get you started.

Another headache, I am honestly getting sick of BS Player!
After finally managing to get the installation finished and the registration sorted out, I’m being hit with this nonsense: whenever I open a file—which does play, mind you—it immediately throws up an error message saying, "There was a problem sending the command to the program." It’s incredibly frustrating because sometimes that little warning window just freezes right there, taking the entire folder containing the file down with it! On top of that, I can't even load subtitles half the time... So, 🙂 I think I'll just try a different version. What a cursed week. 😠 Has anyone else dealt with this specific mess? How did you manage to fix it?

Oh, and another thing that’s driving me up the wall: why does it ask me for permission to launch BS Player every single time? Is there really no way to just set it as the default and stop the constant questioning?

Just end your misery and install VLC Media Player... it completely blew me away, and now I find myself using it constantly!

My brother uses it, but frankly, it does nothing for me. It lacks the necessary encoding support for my subtitle files, and quite honestly, I find the user interface to be rather unappealing.🤷

I have reverted once again to version 2.44 after testing two other iterations, including the most recent beta release. Now, I am faced with a complete lack of video; there is audio, certainly, but the screen remains blank. Even after installing the K-Lite Codec Pack, and despite the fact that VLC Media Player spends several minutes during its installation process deploying its own specific codecs, the issue persists. My patience is wearing incredibly thin 😲

Look for something like video Rendeless under the video settings—it’s a bit fuzzy in my mind right now—and then just switch it over to blabla9 (I can't quite recall the exact name, but I know there’s a number 9 in there somewhere! 😁 )

Just wipe your OS and do a clean install because there's no way you're hitting this many snags just by chance.

Yes, I’ve actually already started a thread regarding VLC Media Player, but I simply cannot get the damn thing to function properly.
The image quality is just incredibly blurry, almost as if it isn't playing nice with Windows 7. It becomes particularly glaringly obvious when, for instance, I attempt to adjust the audio levels—the "volume" overlay looks completely washed out and lacks the clarity it should have.

My question is this: which media player do you all actually use that meets the following criteria:

- It absolutely must run smoothly on Windows 7
- It needs to handle subtitles and standard US character encodings without a hitch
- It is highly preferable that it doesn't come bundled with viruses or spyware 😠 (because, frankly, everything over at warez-bb GOM or those old VLC Media Player builds is always riddled with malware)

For example, I downloaded this m2v player, and it behaves in the most bizarre fashion; first off, it forced my Windows 7 interface back to a basic theme, and secondly, I can't for the life of me get the video file to restart from the beginning. When I hit stop—not pause, mind you—and then select play, it just resumes right where it left off. At least the picture is sharp, unlike my former favorite, VLC Media Player.

I've been sticking with VLC Media Player for about a week now... It's been working pretty well for me, honestly. I even used to run it back when I was still on Windows XP.

Does it actually handle special characters properly for you when it comes to subtitles? What kind of encoding do you usually set? It seems to me like there isn't even an option for Western European encoding on that thing.

Alright, I found it, made the change, and it actually worked.
The problem is, the picture quality is just terrible; it's blurry, lacks any real clarity, and looks completely pixelated. Is there some other setting I can tweak to fix this, or is it simply an issue where things just won't run properly on Windows 7 regardless of what I try? 🤷
When I use a different player, the image looks great—exactly how it ought to look—but frankly, I'm not a fan of that software or its other features. I want my VLC Media Player to work the way it’s supposed to. 🙂

Well, look at that—I tried using VLC Media Player too, and I'm hitting the exact same wall! Did you deal with that blurry image issue as well? If so, how on earth did you manage to clear it up?
The only way the picture looks remotely decent is through my m2v player, but let’s be honest, everything else about that specific program is just terrible.

Are the special characters actually rendering right for you in the subtitles? What kind of encoding are you using, because I don't think there's even a Central European option in there, is there?

Personally, I'm running Windows 7 and VLC Media Player works perfectly fine for me, including all those accented characters, so I honestly don't see why it's giving you such a hard time???

The subtitles themselves are fine, but once I hit full screen, the picture quality just falls apart; it looks blurry, lacks any real clarity, and I am at my wit's end trying to fix it.🤷
I've already gone through the trouble of downloading the latest ATI drivers and the K-Lite Codec Pack... absolutely nothing has made a difference. Are you experiencing this same issue?
