New PC is making a buzzing noise in IT Support ·
Honestly, I’m not even sure if that noise is coming from the power supply. When I listen closer, it sounds like it's coming from down low, near the motherboard. But then again, I can't pin down the exact source for certain. I'll probably just have to take the rig to a shop to get it checked out properly.

darkowl72, if the coils on the board or the GPU (which is integrated into the CPU here) are actually whining—assuming that's even what's happening—does that mean there's an actual defect with the board or the graphics?

Alright, I popped the case open and took a listen. I'm pretty damn sure that whining sound is coming straight from the power supply. I ran CrystalDiskInfo just to be safe, and the hard drive seems totally fine—it shows a Mayo Clinic: Good. Based on where the noise is coming from, it’s definitely the PSU. Is that squealing a sign that the unit is failing? I'm assuming I should just swap it out.

@Antomon
I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

That was my first thought, too. Could be the hard drive acting up. I'll check that out next. Appreciate it.

I'm going to run that utility to check the drive health. Thanks.

I'll let you guys know what I find.

Hey there

So, I just picked up a new rig, running a Dell Inspiron motherboard with an Intel processor. Every time I boot it up, I get this weird beeping sound. It’s like this low buzzing or chirping noise. It isn't deafeningly loud, but you definitely notice it. Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on it—maybe it sounds a bit like a cricket or a muffled tea kettle whistling. Anyway, it's some kind of buzz or beep. It feels off; I wouldn't call this "normal" behavior. I have no clue where it's coming from. The pitch seems to shift depending on what I'm doing on the PC. For instance, when my antivirus is running a scan, the buzzing gets more erratic instead of staying constant. Once the machine goes into sleep mode, the sound stops completely. What could be causing this? The only thing I should be hearing is the faint hum of a fan, right?

George Sanders37 said:I don't get why you wouldn't just do this part—it’s the fastest way to fix things. Just back up your data using a Linux Live CD first.

You need to set your BIOS to boot from the optical drive first (the CD-ROM). You should see a screen like http://chara.epfl.ch/~fsalvi/Windows...ressanykey.jpg where you press a key to start the setup, and then you can just format the drive.

You could try repairing the system, but honestly, you'll just be wasting your time.

That’s basically what happened. I booted from a Windows XP CD after tweaking the BIOS settings, but right when it starts loading the disc (that blue screen pops up), it throws that error from above. Then it just hangs. I've never run into this before. Regardless, I've decided to just wipe it and install a fresh OS, Windows 7. I'm not going to waste my energy trying to patch this broken system. I'll use a Linux Live CD to move everything from my primary hard drive to a secondary one, then I'll just slap a new OS onto the primary drive.

Thanks for the help.
System error/issue in IT Support ·
Hey folks

My system is bricked. I need some help here. I’ll try to break down what happened below.
I'm running Windows XP. I recently tried cleaning out some spyware or malware using Spyhunter. After the scan finished, it claimed it found several threats and wiped them out. Everything seemed fine at first, but once I rebooted, the machine refused to start. It looks like it nuked something critical for the OS to actually function.

This is what pops up when I try to boot:
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl + alt + del to restart

So, I figured if some core Windows files were deleted, I could just boot from a Windows CD and run a repair. But there's a catch—that isn't working either. When I boot from the Windows CD and it starts loading its own programs, I get this:
File/i386/halaacpi.dll could not be loaded
The error code is 7
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

I didn't assume the disc was bad, so I grabbed a second Windows XP CD. Same exact result! Only this time, it's a different file it's complaining about. Every single time, it's something else. Here’s what showed up:

File /i386/ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 4096.
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

File /i386/KDCOM.DLL/ could not be loaded.
The error code is 7.
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

I literally cannot get the Windows XP CD to run.
There is no way both discs are defective.

Is it possible that the Windows CD needs certain folders from the local Windows installation to function properly, and it's failing because those files are missing?

I don't get it... I've had minor issues before where files were accidentally deleted, but it never got to the point where the CD itself wouldn't boot. And that's two different discs.

I managed to dig into the system files using a Linux Live CD, and everything looks fine regarding my actual data. I have full access to all my drives and files; I just can't get the Windows OS to launch. I'm stuck.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? Is it even possible to do something via a Linux bootable CD or USB? Can I somehow grab the missing system files from the Windows CD or download them from the web and drop them into the Windows system folders? That was my plan for the NTDLR file, but I can't even get into MS-DOS because the Windows CD won't work.

Even if I wanted to just wipe everything and reinstall the whole OS, I can't get the CD to boot.
I'm scouring the internet for answers, but so far, nothing is working.
Trouble transferring files from PC to tablet in IT Support ·
I used AirDroid to move some files from my PC over to my tablet. It works fine, but I’m looking to do this directly via a USB cable instead. I haven't found a fix on this forum yet... moving stuff from the tablet to the PC is easy, but going the other way is a total dead end—it won't let me save to any folder. I'll probably just hit up the shop where I picked up the device and see what they say.

Kimberly Robinson2 said:I mean, I get it... I’m dealing with the exact same headache on my own tablet. It’s got an 8GB SD card tucked in there, but the device just refuses to acknowledge its existence when it comes to storage—it won't transfer anything to it. Honestly, I can't even snap a photo without getting an error, and trying to update a few basic apps is a total lost cause because the internal memory is basically non-existent. I’ve already purged everything I possibly could, but it doesn't matter—I still can't update a single thing or move a song or a picture over because the device itself is just full. I can't even risk a factory reset, either—I'd lose all those custom SIM card settings they programmed in for this 3G tablet-phone combo.

So, it’s a safe bet you’re hitting the same wall—just a complete lack of internal space on the device.

No way. I literally just bought this tablet.

I tried following this guide:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/41583...ne-wirelessly/

After running a LAN scan, my PC shows up under the LAN section in ES File Explorer on the tablet. But here's the catch: when I tap the icon for my computer, it hits me with a prompt for a username and password. If it isn't the credentials from FileZilla, I have no clue what they're supposed to be. It won't accept anything. On top of that, the IP address is totally different from the one listed in FileZilla. I don't get it.

George Sanders37, thanks for getting back to me and laying out those potential fixes.

I actually plugged "Cannot copy..." into Google and scoured a few forums where this specific issue pops up.
I’ve already tried several of the things you mentioned.

1) Tried it—still doing the exact same thing.
2) I only have that one single cable.
3) Already tried it—no change.
4) Not entirely sure what that entails, but I assume it means a factory reset.
5) There isn't an SD card inserted in the Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

Regarding that last point, I think I get what you mean, but the catch is I can't copy files into any folder at all; after the reset, I'm down to just five folders when I used to have about twenty.

I even gave FileZilla FTP a shot, but the tablet doesn't even show up on the network.

I posted the issue over in the tablet subforum too, just in case someone there has run into this before.

Thanks for the input and the advice, darkowl72.

What if it’s just a compatibility issue? If we're talking about that specific Samsung Galaxy Tab A cable, maybe it's an older USB standard and the PC just isn't picking it up right?

Could be... but the device actually shows up as PMT3008_Wi_C and says 'internal storage'... I can see all the folders clearly.
I was only moving tiny PDF files and some MP3s. No video. And none of that stuff is DRM-protected, so that's not it.

I'll give it a shot on my other tablets too.

Transferring files from my tablet to my PC works just fine. The problem is going from the PC to the tablet—I keep getting that error message above. I’ve been digging through Google for a couple of hours trying to fix this, but I'm coming up empty. Windows recognizes the device as an MTP media device automatically and all the folders show up in the file explorer, but it won't let me copy a single damn file.
Is this even the right spot for this? Should I have posted this in the Android subforum instead?
I've already tried a few different alternatives to Windows Explorer, but nothing is working.

Alright, look. I picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab A and hooked it up to my PC via USB because I wanted to move some files over. Everything seems fine on the surface—the computer recognizes the device, the tablet shows it's in data transfer mode, and the PC pulls up the device name along with all its folders (though there are no actual files visible, just the directories). But here’s the catch: every single time I try to move files like PDFs or MP3s from my PC to the tablet, I get hit with this error: Cannot copy. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected. It just gives me the option to 'skip' or 'cancel.' The transfer fails every time. What am I missing here? Does anyone actually know what the issue is?
Monitor brightness issues in Computer Peripherals ·
Benjamin King2 said:http://justgetflux.com/

Alright, thanks. I'll give that software a shot. Still, I think I’m going to have to pick up a new monitor regardless. If anyone has a solid recommendation, I'm all ears.

Before this one, I was using a Sony LCD (4:3) and it was actually pretty decent. Fine for watching stuff. Honestly, I'd still be using it if the screen hadn't died on me. :-(

Joshua Garcia3 said:Are you absolutely sure you went through every single picture setting listed in the manual?

Yeah, I did. I dropped the brightness to 10%, messed with the contrast, gamma, and color temp (set it to warm), and even flipped it over to Energy Star mode, but the thing is still way too bright.
Monitor brightness issues in Computer Peripherals ·
I recently picked up a monitor that’s so blindingly bright it actually gives me eye strain after just a little while. Even when I crank the brightness down to the absolute minimum and toggle the Energy Star mode, it doesn't do squat.

The monitor is a Dell Inspiron Monitor

On some websites, they even go as far as calling it an 'Apple Studio Display'! If I had known the screen was going to be this aggressive, I wouldn't have touched it. Honestly, staring at some of my old monitors is easier on my eyes than this thing. It’s a massive nuisance. I want to know: as a consumer, do I have the right to return a product like this if it's literally messing with my health and causing eye strain?
