Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:I think those might be available on June 18th. The big question is if they'll actually hit our local stores right away. Word on the street is that the new GPU prices are actually higher than current ones, even though they're just rebrands—which makes zero sense! It should be the other way around. Who knows what will happen. Maybe the price drop on older models like the 285 is the break we've been waiting for.

that monitor for $343

I'm going to hold off on buying a case until I see how the GPU situation plays out.
I'm a little worried that the monitor doesn't have HDMI. Is there anything better at that price point?

Timothy Kim60 said:If you’ve already waited this long, just hold out a few more days for the new GPUs and see what happens.
I noticed the R9 285 just took a massive price dive!

http://www.amazon.com/s?k=R9+285

It used to be around $633

As for where to buy, that's entirely up to you. Do you know if you'll need software for screen recording and stuff like that?

That is an incredible deal! Roughly when are those new GPUs expected to drop?

I have a rough idea, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm actually picking up a monitor in Washington, D.C. in four days, so if anyone has recommendations for a monitor under $367 (maybe via Affirm) or a keyboard and mouse under $100, please let me know!
I'm currently looking at a Dell v236hlbd and a CM Storm Octane.
But I am all ears if you think I should switch things up!

fadedorca66 said:What would you pick up in LA versus what's available here?

I was actually looking at an i5 4460 paired with an R9 280 from a local shop downtown, but the price jumped on me! $100My budget is capped at $5,000...
Do you think we'll see some price drops on the R9 series once those new GPUs hit the market?

Timothy Kim60 said:I honestly never figured out how Craigslist works. Is it just a messy site for new and used parts mixed with actual businesses? I can't tell who's actually selling and who's buying. Does everything have to come from the same user or be in the same city? New or used?

I'm stuck deciding where to pick up my PC—should I go with a local shop in Chicago or try Craigslist in Banja Luka?
If I buy in Chicago, I can get a sales tax refund.
But in Banja Luka, they'll install Windows and all my software for free, plus throw in three games of my choice.
What would YOU guys suggest?

CPU: AMD FX-4300,
Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M LX3
RAM: 8GB Kingston 1600MHz,
Hard Drive: 1TB Toshiba SATA 3 7200rpm
GPU: Sapphire AMD 7950 3GB DDR5 384bit DX11+,
Case: RaidMax Super Viper
PSU: Cooler Master Thunder B2 600W 85+%

Is this rig actually worth it $1533?
If not, you can probably find something better on eBay. 746 miles.

Timothy Kim60 said:The VG4 is easily the most budget-friendly, stripped-down option ASRock offers. Then you have those DGS models—I believe they used the 1155 socket and FM2, which unfortunately had pretty high return rates. That said, like I mentioned before, it’ll get the job done just fine! Still, both feel like a bit of a waste compared to an MSI board that comes with a solid 3-year warranty. $107.

This is it. Think of this as Best Buy’s budget version of an Intel board. It features a USB 3.0 header—perfect if you're using a front-panel case setup rather than just the rear ports—and offers slightly better voltage regulation for stability. Plus, it actually has HDMI, which is a lifesaver compared to the VG4 model! It should also come with a solid 3-year warranty, just like the boards from MSI, ASUS, or Gigabyte.

EDIT

You should just buy yours in America instead; look at these prices in Canada!

The HD7950!, B85-HD3RAM is just as affordable at the local Best Buy. Click!

Since I'll be heading into Chicago anyway, it’s much easier to just swing by the Center to grab my gear. It's a total win-win, and honestly, I can't be bothered dealing with the hassle of an online order. 😉
Eevo let me know that the R9 280 will be in stock in about 15 days—just in time for my trip up north!

Timothy Kim60 said:Which R9 280? Check the top right corner to see what's actually in stock.
I'd definitely go for a higher-quality motherboard, like this one
.
That installment price doesn't include the 8% discount—so honestly, I think it's all a bit overpriced.$1800

It's an XFX R9 280. Everything is available except for the GPU (I'll check on when that'll be back in stock).
I recall someone mentioning the cheapest H81M board would work for a non-K i5...
The whole bundle comes to $1.75 without the 8% discount applied for monthly payments.

Here I am again! I'm planning to pick up a new PC in about ten days, and my budget is sitting at $5,000. I put together a quick list over at Best Buy, so would you mind taking a look? I'm building this specifically for gaming.

fadedorca66 said:It’s hardly off-topic! It’s vital that our thread starter, Roger Mitchell4, stays sharp, keeps all this info in mind, and actually learns something. 🤣

Exactly. And don't try to act smart with me. 👍

Robert Rodriguez2 said:You can't just mess around with random component combos three months out... you should be finalizing things maybe 3 or 4 days before you actually buy... not freaking three months early

This is exactly what you all suggested to me here on the forum:
''Stop wasting time over the next two months....
Do some research, build up your knowledge, track market prices... stay in the loop''
That is precisely what I am doing! ☕

fadedorca66 said:Good grief, you're really messing with us! You aren't even buying anything for another three months—who knows if we'll all still be around by then!

Messing with us? What are you talking about?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
I’m just praying to God that component prices drop by then! 😬

Timothy Kim60 said:Is that $4,800 with or without a monitor?

Look, the ball is entirely in your court. You first need to decide when you're actually pulling the trigger—are we talking right now, or waiting until summer like you mentioned before? If you're holding off until summer, there's really no point in me giving you advice today. Plus, you have to figure out if you want new or used, local or online, cash or financing, and so on. There are just way too many variables involved!

$1667 And the monitor is included!
So, I'll be buying the PC at the start of June.
I'm going with a new build (probably from Best Buy), most likely paying cash.😉
And honestly, June isn't that far off; I doubt all the components will suddenly vanish by then.

Timothy Kim60 said:Fair enough! That power supply isn't garbage by any means; I just think you can find better deals here in the States for the same price. Go ahead and grab it then!

By the way, it looks like you can overclock on this board too.

Regarding the topic at hand, honestly, it might be best to re-read the entire thread (specifically the posts meant for you) just to make sure everything clicks. It feels like some of your questions have actually been answered before!

Adam Moore3

He's in Canada, and the build is from Canada.

I've done it plenty of times, and I guess I'll do it again, haha!😛
In the US, my budget has expanded to $1600+monitor 😁
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Adam Moore3 said:Yeah, it's definitely a solid deal—the price is great! Just keep in mind that if you're buying from Canada, you'll likely have to cover shipping costs unless you pick it up yourself. Plus, sending stuff for repairs could get messy. You're essentially shipping components to another country, so there's always a risk things might get complicated. Still, you won't find a configuration like this locally for that kind of money. Also, about customs—since they aren't in the European Union, you might run into extra fees, though I'm not entirely sure how that works.

I'm actually from Canada.😁

Timothy Kim60 said:If I recall correctly, over these 21 pages, 😬 you actually suggested using the Intel Pentium G3258, but you turned it down because it's just a dual-core chip.

By the way, you can definitely overclock that CPU even with a stock cooler—up to about 4.2 GHz (I know of two people who did it), depending on the specific chip you get; some have even hit 4.4! https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=182658.0

If you go with the R9 270, you should absolutely overclock it—highly recommended!

Also, if you're buying locally here in the States, don't settle for a generic power supply; there are much better options out there.

Man, you keep bringing up things I supposedly said before! 😁
When I first started this thread, I was totally clueless about components or PC builds (it was obvious since I was basically looking to buy a pre-built rig with ), I just cared about playing games.

I found this used setup in Canada for $32.
That power supply comes with the build, but I'll easily swap it out later.
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Adam Moore3 said:Yeah, considering the price, it’s an awesome deal, but that power supply is pretty mediocre. Don't try overclocking or anything like that—it's just a low-end Corsair series. If you can swap in a different PSU (like a 400W unit) somehow, it would be a killer deal. Also, you can easily upgrade to an i5 later on without any issues.

So the motherboard supports an i5, but will I run into headaches like being unable to overclock, needing an 800W PSU, or needing a fancy cooler and all that junk? Will my Intel Pentium G3258 2 x3 serve me well enough for at least 6 months while I save up for a better CPU?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 2 x3 @ 3.2GHz, can be overclocked to 4.2GHz with the stock cooler

GPU: Gigabyte R9 270 OC Windforce 2 GB 256

Motherboard: ASRock H81M-VG4 micro ATX LGA 1150 USB3

RAM: G. Skill 4GB DDR 3 1600 MHz

HDD: Hitachi 1TB 7200rpm SATA 32MB cache

Case: Zalman ZM-T1-Plus

PSU: Corsair VS450 450W

3200

Is this setup actually any good? It's such a steal! Is it worth grabbing the G3258 now just to swap in an i5 later on?

Timothy Kim60 said:If you want a decent power supply without breaking the bank, check this one out!

Will this be enough power for an FX build with an R7?
