- The 260 is just a tiny bit weaker than the 260X version. Honestly, you can just overclock it to match the performance!
- It’s a 6-core processor, so you’ll have plenty of room to drop in a much beefier graphics card later on.
- Regarding the motherboard... an ASUS Prime would be the dream, but this one will definitely get the job done. It includes a taller cooler to keep those VRMs from overheating, plus there's a passive heatsink right on the VRMs, so everything should run smoothly.
- You get 4GB of RAM, and once you save up a little more, you can easily add another 4GB.

Just reuse your old case! Or find a cheap one for 12 miles or ask them if they have any budget-friendly used scrap metal lying around. Easy peasy!

The R7 260 won't bother me at all; I can overclock that thing easily.
We could have gone with a 400W power supply to save some cash and swapped in the ASUS Prime, which is 25 miles a bit pricier.

Do I really need a 560W power supply?
I think it's better to grab a Fortron 400W and a 2GB version of the 260X instead!

Alexander Moore67 said:There aren't any perfect pre-built options out there. If you've been reading these forums, you know building it yourself is the way to go! If you're not feeling the i5 4440, then just grab an FX6300 and a card like an R7 260X. But honestly, what I suggested earlier is built to last five years. You won't have much fun with a weak GPU after just two.

I really like the build you put together! But does it actually matter which CPU I pick if I'm just pairing it with a budget card like an R7 260X or a GTX 750? 🤔

Alexander Moore67 said:An Intel Core i5-4440! $453/211 miles
The MSI H81M-P33 V2 is a solid little board! It gets the job done perfectly for my needs. $127/59 miles
The Chieftec GPS-500A8 power supply delivers 500W! $117/54 miles
Raidmax Super Viper 321WB case! $107/50 miles
I've picked up some GoodRam 4GB 1600MHz DDR3! Happy days! $100/47 miles

Once you've saved up enough, just grab a dedicated graphics card separately. Honestly, the i5 is such a massive step up from the i3 right at the start! Plus, the integrated HD 4600 on that i5 is actually pretty decent for some lighter gaming.

I picked up a graphics card from Canada right at the beginning! Does anyone know if I could put together something similar with a budget of $3,300?

Alexander Moore67 said:check out these local shops selling parts in places like Austin, for example.

I already know that shop; they have the best prices in the US.
What's their selection of pre-built rigs like regarding 497 miles?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
fadedorca66 said:Of course it's not good; if you leave that stock cooler on, it's basically a death sentence.

Don't you have a local shop where you can just walk in with a list of parts and say, "I want this and that"?

Personally, I’d go with an i3 build first and then drop in a Hex later (a 400W PSU should cut it), plus you can always upgrade to an i5 and a beefier GPU down the road...

The closest one to me is in Mostar, but the prices there are absolutely brutal... an FX 6300 that goes for $267 in the States, they charge $400 👎 here.
Honestly, I’d opt for the i3 too, but that dual-core setup really bugs me—I know it has HT, but it's still just not quite there.

Timothy Kim60 said:The price isn't bad for the US market, though I'm not a fan of that junk power supply. Also, stuffing it with an old, small HDD is a pain since you can barely find 250GB drives in stores anymore—they usually cost the same as 500GB or even 1TB ones!

I actually have another 300GB drive, so that 250GB one won't bother me at all.
I'll probably swap out that power supply as soon as I save up a little cash. A 400W Hexa unit should be plenty, right?
I once built a rig with an FX 6300 and an AMD Radeon R7 260X, $1067...
But I'm thinking the 960GM-V3 might not be the best match for that CPU??

Timothy Kim60 said:Morning! We actually covered that i3 discussion about two pages back.

$1000, would you say this is a fair price for an H81M-K,
an Intel Core i3-4150,
an AMD Radeon R7 260X
, 4GB of RAM
, a 250GB HDD
, a random generic 560W power supply
and Windows 8?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
How would an Intel Core i3-4150 hold up for gaming alongside an AMD Radeon R7 260X?
I'm looking at an H81M-K motherboard.
It’s a pretty decent deal for me, so I'd love to get some thoughts on this setup!

Timothy Kim60 said:Even if the monitor itself said it, I’d believe it! Don't let the photos fool you—just stick to what the specs actually say.

Got it 😉

graniteharbor85 said:There’s absolutely nothing mentioned about a monitor, and there's no way it's included in that setup. Honestly, this guy is totally exaggerating and talking nonsense. He posts a screenshot of idle temperatures, but you can bet he ran Prime95 for two days straight using just the stock cooler on a 760K in a case like that with the fan on max—99% of the time those temps will soar past 70°C while the fan screams! I've built plenty of these FM2 builds with an AMD APU or an Athlon, so I know exactly how they behave.

He really padded the price. I actually thought it was $1,050.00 including the monitor, but nope. 😉

Timothy Kim60 said:What on earth? That's way too expensive. You have internet access—just check some retailer websites and you'll see what things actually cost.

With a build like this, you just get a slightly better and newer CPU, a higher-tier graphics card, a 1TB HDD, and an aftermarket cooler (which this build lacks). The only downsides would be a weaker power supply, while the motherboard and case remain the same. It's brand new and better for the exact same price!

And you even get a monitor included, if you ask me!

Is this build actually worth anything? It seems way too cheap to me! 🤔

Alexander Moore67 said:Check out this shop on Craigslist and look at this:
FX-6300 95W
if you aren't planning on overclocking, the Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
and the Corsair LC-CC-95 cooler
would be about 350 USD total, or $467

I'm not sure! Maybe down the road if I need more FPS for gaming, but for now, I won't be overclocking!
That seems pretty cheap, just for the cooler $40, and here in the US$27.

Timothy Kim60 said:Watch Dogs doesn't even have an in-game benchmark, so you can't just compare two random YouTube videos—heaven knows they could be from totally different scenes or settings! Just look at the GPU and CPU specs in a proper review. Besides, we're arguing over nonsense when neither of these options fits your budget anyway.

Fair enough.

Sean Garcia3 said:Your posts are a bit confusing! One minute you're saying the AMD FX-6300 is way better than an i3, and then you ask if an i3 paired with a weak GPU beats an AMD FX-6300 with a strong one. Well, obviously the AMD FX-6300 wins there because those GPUs are worlds apart! Even if you had an Intel Core i7 with an NVIDIA GTX 750, the combo of an AMD FX-6300 and an AMD Radeon R9 270X would perform better in games since the graphics card is what really drives the results when gaming.

Actually, no... I just checked Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4, and the Intel Core i3-4150 and NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti actually get about 10 FPS more than the AMD FX setup with the R9!
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
fadedorca66 said:No hard feelings, but there's just no logic in that! 😁

The AMD Radeon R7 260X is actually a bit faster than the NVIDIA GTX 750.

Is it even possible that an Intel Core i3-4150 and a GTX 750ti could outperform an AMD FX-6300 and an AMD Radeon R9 270X by over 10 FPS? 🤔...
How about using a Gigabyte on GTX 970 motherboard for an AMD FX setup?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Sean Garcia3 said:What can you even do with an old i5? You'd likely only find one used without any warranty.
Besides, an i3 would actually end up being cheaper than an AMD FX-6300.

Intel Core i3-4150-$317
ASRock H1M HDS-$133

Total:$450

AMD FX-6300-$283
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P-$190
Spire Kepler-$28

Total:$502

I've been watching YouTube, and honestly, the AMD FX performs way better than the i3 for gaming (BF4, Watch Dogs, Crysis)!
Which GPU pairs better with the AMD FX-6300: the NVIDIA GTX 750 or the AMD Radeon R7 260X?

Timothy Kim60 said:It’s not just any basic dual core. It's Dual Core + Hyper-Threading, giving you four virtual cores. Honestly, in most games, it actually outperforms a quad-core AMD Athlon II X4 (though it does cost more), plus you get much better upgrade paths. It also handles all those titles that used to require a true quad-core without breaking a sweat!

More expensive, but definitely better. I'd much rather spend a little extra on the CPU to snag a better graphics card.
How are those old i5-750 processors holding up?
Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:If you're looking to upgrade, I think you mentioned an Intel Core i3 setup in those 17 pages of suggestions. If upgrading makes sense for you, go for an i5 or even an Intel Core i7!

Also, Smartic put together a really solid build for you using an AMD FX-4300, but who knows where we'll be in three months.

No way am I touching Intel; I won't touch anything less than a quad-core.
I'm sticking with this current rig unless I find something significantly better in the next three months!
