If you haven't listened to this alternative take on 'Three Hours,'
this is one of his absolute best versions:Yeah, this works.
African drums bring a completely different energy. It's incredible.

I still spin Hazy Jane II... I was really into that stuff back in my teens... it felt lighter than his other tracks... less lifeless. 😁
Every single one of his songs sticks in your head. You hear them again and they hit just as hard.

it doesn't feel depressing to me either...

For this time of year, it's perfect... there are these subtle nuances and shifts,
the first album is exactly what you described, but the second one feels urban, built for the streets.
The third is totally out of this world. I need to start a new thread for that.

Regarding math rock—if you haven't already (though I assume you have), check out Battles. That entire album is solid, and this specific track wouldn't be nearly as much of a standout without that section at 6:15.... Once, one time, I was amazed 🙂
Generally speaking, that whole build-up of "tension" after the five-minute mark is top tier. Even if parts of it sound a bit like Looney Tunes, someone pointed out how good it is below.
I actually stumbled upon the album while lurking through some old PDF back in 2009. Someone on that legendary "Hate" thread once described them as sounding like Mickey and Mini Maus multiplying on a tin roof. 🤣
