Nathan Walker16 said:Honestly, that’s way too much money for three times a week, and even for five times a week—it’s total garbage when everyone else is charging around $150-$67( $67 which is way too high in my book) and then some guy comes along and drops a space-age price tag like $100
. But you know how it goes, it’s that Krav Maga thing; those Israelis swear by it.

Just look at what they're charging elsewhere. 😉
At the end of the day, everyone has the right to set their own rates, and the market will decide if people actually pay it.
That said, what do you think about offsetting a lower price by cramming 50 or 60 people into a single session? The space is objectively too small for that many people, especially with too few instructors. That isn't exactly a winning strategy either.
Anyway, I think $200-$100 is a reasonable price for our area.
(p.s. I think placidbison20 was taking a jab at my club earlier. If that's the case, just for the record: my group gets to train up to 4 or 5 times a week plus gym access. Our rates range from $0, $200, $240, to $100 depending on age and status. ;) )

Timothy Foster9 said:Since I've never tried anything like this before, I’m looking for something somewhere between recreational and competitive—depending on how much I actually pick up. For me, staying in shape is way more important than just bulking up muscle mass or trying to show off my moves to everyone. -.-

Also, I’m not entirely sure what all these different styles entail; what’s the standard starting point for beginners? A buddy of mine went to a local MMA gym a few times and ended up quitting because he kept getting thrashed lol. I don't want to end up like that, but then again, he's a smaller guy and... well, you know.

That's why I'm asking you guys for advice based on your own experiences. How did you all get started? Because at some point, everyone had their very first day. ^^

Head over to 55 Subice Street around 8:00 or 9:00 PM and take a look. It’s called Dennis Survival Jiu-Jitsu. You can Google it or just search this forum to see what we’ve already written about it.
I'd also recommend checking out kickboxing or Muay Thai. Based on what these guys have been saying, you won't be disappointed.
Gerald Smith76 might have some classic Jiu-Jitsu classes over at Harambasiceva Elementary. I should probably double-check that.

Get low and see what works for you. 👍

Kendo, kenjutsu, hapkido, real aikido, kusul do... we might as well just pull in every variation of karate, aikido, ninjutsu, and Krav Maga while we're at it.
p.s.
-on the grammar side: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs. Ju-Jutsu (traditional Japanese ryu) vs. Jiu-Jitsu (all those modern iterations)
-to expand on this: http://www.judoinfo.com/books/faq1.htm This FAQ on martial arts might actually yield some useful insights if you dig through it...

Last I heard, the official martial art they teach in the military is Taekwondo.
That’s actually not quite right, unfortunately—likely just because of certain people's interests.
I’m guessing the unofficial standard is more along the lines of boxing, judo, and jiu-jitsu?

Honestly, just check out some local gyms and see what sticks;
boxing or Muay Thai.
judo, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or submission grappling (which is really a mix of everything).
All of those combined: MMA.
There are "traditional" jiu-jitsu schools out there, but I don't know much about their specific training quality—maybe Alpha?
Regardless, my first recommendation would be Muay Thai, MMA, or Krav Maga/Dennis Survival Jiu-Jitsu (starting in September).🙂

If you're in New York City:
Swing by Brooklyn for some UFC training (I think there are two other clubs in the area).
Check out some Muay Thai over on Broadway or somewhere similar.
Or, if you want to jump straight in, look into signing up for Jiu-Jitsu at 55 Broadway once September starts.

Unfortunately, that starts at home—parents are the foundation of everything.
Then they just stand by while lawlessness and chaos take over every level of society...

In the news, on KEXP... They recently had a total mess on their hands regarding those drum majorettes, but they actually managed to fix it—during the broadcast, they reached out to a big shot over at Berkshire Hathaway...

Nicole Lee4, why don't you just ask the coach?

offtopic: Speaking of Taekwondo—I was walking past the medical center near the old airfield today and noticed a sign from that TKD club over by the Boeing plant. It says "TKD Self-Defense," with a heavy emphasis on women's classes.
I’m actually curious about how that setup looks. Don't hit me with the "go check it out yourself" line, because I really don't have the time. 🙂

Oh, also try heading over to the primary school on Harambasiceva (situated between Zvonimirova and Maksimirska—right by the Chicago Banka station). They definitely have Judo, and likely traditional Jiu-Jitsu too. You enter through the back entrance, not the main door. Just ask the janitor or someone about evening training sessions. Check it out and see what works for you.

While I was there, some woman mentioned there’s a Jiu-Jitsu class held over on the fourth floor. Does anyone actually know the exact location of that?

Scott Sanders6 said:I mean, I wouldn't really mind. As long as there's an address for some club or something, I guess it's fine.

Word is there’s JJ, maybe that Thai boxing spot over in a suburb like maybe Naperville, or that Knez Mislav club?

(For example, Robin Palmer3 is Ban, and briskjackal5 is from the Tresnjevka area)

Scott Sanders6 said:$100 Apparently, her classes consist of
striking, grappling, and some ground work...

But where else am I supposed to go to train ju-jitsu around here?

Or find anything besides boxing in the Greater Chicago area?

Personally, I wouldn't go there.

Try MMA instead; you have Stipe, Robin Palmer3, and I think there are a few other clubs out there—just pick whatever works best for you. It’s solid. And you don't have to step into a ring for those wild brawls you see online if that's what you're worried about. If you want to get back into JJ later, this will give you a great foundation. You might actually prefer it. 😉

If nothing else, try Judo or Muay Thai, I don't know...

Mark Hill2 said:So, I was thinking... maybe someone with actual expertise could weigh in here—you know, someone who actually knows their stuff—about which exercises are truly the best for getting rid of belly fat... and more importantly, which ones actually speed up the process? I mean, does it even work that way? And honestly, are there any little tricks to pull off... like wearing shapewear, or maybe some kind of compression gear... I don't really know!

Here’s a tip: stop crushing beers and start burning more calories than you consume.😬
Wearing extra layers just makes you lose water weight, not fat, and you'll end up overheating.

Or just take the advice from mistypanther. ; )

Purely from an anatomical standpoint, the left side hangs a bit lower. That means there's a higher chance of losing the left one. 😁 😁
Acid rain effects in Health ·
Take phosphoric acid, for example—it’s right there in Coca-Cola and similar sodas. If you brush your teeth immediately after drinking them, you’re basically asking for trouble. You'll end up with damaged enamel because you aren't giving it any time to remineralize with saliva; instead, you're taking acid-softened enamel and scrubbing it aggressively with a toothbrush right after it's been compromised.

Peter Myers29 said:In theory, Chuck might have some serious power behind his strikes, but Zak is pretty skilled at absorbing impact....🤔

Chuck also knows his way around grappling—he's a BJJ black belt, after all. Who knows, maybe he pulls off a takedown or a sweep? The real question is what happens next. 😬
