PC won't boot at all – help! in IT Support ·
Michael Jackson10 said:Well, look—if you’re deeply attached to your current OS setup for some reason, or if you have critical files you absolutely need to salvage (though, mind you, that should always be done PRIOR to any hardware tinkering), then you might want to try what I suggested. Since I haven't a clue which motherboard you're running, or which specific BIOS settings are available—and since our resident expert, AC Milan, is currently out on vacation—I can only give you some general guidance. You'll want to mess around with the SATA/IDE configurations; essentially, you're hunting for those "legacy" modes that allow newer hardware to recognize and support older storage protocols...

Now, if there isn't anything particularly vital on that machine—if it's just your typical, everyday desktop used for basic tasks—then honestly, there is nothing worth saving. In fact, a clean installation is actually the better way to go. Think about it: when you swap out a motherboard, you're effectively replacing a huge chunk of the system's soul. Aside from the GPU and the hard drive, almost everything else is integrated onto that board—all the controllers, all the logic—and they all demand their own specific drivers. Sure, you *could* try to patch an old installation onto the new setup and hope it functions correctly... but why would you even bother upgrading to a new motherboard and processor in the first place? To get more speed, right? Well, this is just another step toward that goal: a fresh, clean install with updated drivers for your new board will speed things up significantly, whereas Winsi won't be bogged down by trying to support components that aren't even there anymore...

And truth be told, I've been messing around with Windows; my motherboard is a Gigabyte B85M-D3H..... Thanks for everything 🙂

It strikes me—and please, correct me if I'm wrong—that you swapped out the motherboard and the CPU, then simply plugged the old hard drive back in, expecting everything to run just as smoothly as before, albeit perhaps a bit snappier. Did you actually perform a clean install of Win and all the necessary drivers... or was this just a "plug and play" situation?

If that drive is an older model, you might want to tinker around in the Bios-Cmos settings—specifically by switching from AHCI to IDE mode—because there's a high probability your current installation lacks the specific controller drivers required for the hardware on your new board...

Everything you mentioned is true, but does that mean I have to wipe my Windows completely? (I'm running Windows 7)

So, I decided to go ahead and swap out my CPU and motherboard yesterday—thinking I’d finally give my rig the upgrade it deserves—but now I'm stuck in this endless loop of misery. Every single time I try to boot the machine up, I get hit with a Blue Screen of Death displaying error code 0x00000007b... and then, just like clockwork, the system restarts itself. It’s just happening over and over again—a total cycle of frustration.

Larry Ortiz5 said:The i5 4460 uses a newer socket (1150), but looking at the link, it seems out of stock... Is there any other shop we could check? Or is it strictly limited to Links? And just to be clear—do you need both the processor and the motherboard together? What about everything else in the build?

It doesn't matter which store it's from—anywhere in the States will do—as long as I can get the processor and the motherboard. For the CPU, I was thinking somewhere in the ballpark of $150, and maybe around $40 for the board.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/processor-details this is really the only option unless you happen to know of something significantly better for that kind of cash.

If you wouldn't mind—could you possibly drop a link from Newegg here?

I'm really not much of a tech expert—honestly, I'm out of my depth here—so thanks for the help, 🙂

So, I’m currently running an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750—and honestly, it's been a decent little workhorse for me—but I was wondering if it would actually play nice with an ASRock H81M-DGS motherboard? It's an Intel H81, Micro-ATX, featuring Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz... does that setup sound like a viable match to you guys?

Do you happen to know of any decent websites out there? Maybe something reliable?

Will this work with my ASUS Prime Motherboard? Also, where’s the best spot to order from if I want it delivered straight to my doorstep? 🙂
