I can't say I blame them, though. It's the Daily Mail, after all—they have about as much to do with Formula 1 as a local news outlet would with a 🙂Story

What a guy
This looks even worse for 2018 than what I 🤦was trying to estimate from memory just yesterday. 🤦 I suppose he might "improve" things just a bit more before the season ends, if we're being optimistic 😵.

I mean, Kimi Räikkönen is just on another level, I guess. 🙏 😁

So, we have arrived in 2018.

It was a complete failure, honestly. If Sebastian Vettel had been out there instead of Kimi Räikkönen, I guess we might have seen a repeat of that Spa race—where Vettel probably would've cruised to a win by about ten seconds.

I agree with that—though maybe not regarding yesterday. Sebastian Vettel seemed far too jittery and scattered all weekend; I guess I just can't quite put my finger on what was bothering him. 🤷

That’s really the core difference between him and Lewis—no worries. Whether Lewis is sitting in P1 or P20, he stays incredibly composed and level-headed. He doesn't crack under pressure or make those unforced errors. I guess Seb is only like that this season when the track is dry.🙄And once he starts from P1—well, everything just falls apart, I guess.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread—in the last 28 races since Canada in 2017, you've already snapped a front wing on the opening lap in five of them. 🤦 I guess Lewis Hamilton doesn't really stand a chance at pulling that off.

Thomas Davis98 said:Where did you get 44 from? The number is actually much higher—you have to count not just how many points Vettel lost through his own silly mistakes, but also how many extra points Lewis Hamilton gained because of them.

The gap is +30 in favor of Lewis Hamilton now—I mentioned that earlier—whereas it would have been roughly +26 in favor of Vettel. I was just doing the math in my head since I'm away from my computer right now and don't really feel like squinting at my phone 😁, so I only mentioned the points Vettel wasted on pure errors.

Sebastian Vettel threw 25 points into a DHL commercial in Germany, had those mishaps in Baku, went 3-6 yesterday at Monza, and I think he lost a few points in France too. His performance in Austria wasn't exactly stellar either, though Lewis Hamilton retired there. I'm not counting China, since Max Verstappen hit him and knocked him out 😬—both Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton had one retirement each.

Vettel has dropped about 44 points so far. If he hadn't, he might have had maybe a 26-point lead over Hamilton—I’m too lazy to do the actual math, so I'm just eyeballing it. It's probably hard to say if that would have cost Lewis the title, given there are still seven Grand Prix left in the season.

Nicholas Newman2 said:Look, I’m just trying to be helpful here—please take another look at the incident. Don't forget that stewards aren't always consistent, and there aren't really any clear-cut criteria. The reason I mention that is because as long as things stay this way, any decision can be picked apart by comparing it to something from the past. Every incident probably needs to be viewed in isolation. And in this case, Max definitely overstepped.

Look, objectively speaking, I agree that what happened between Max and Valtteri Bottas warranted a penalty. But I still maintain that the penalty itself feels silly and undeserved, mostly because the enforcement seems so selective. Why don't the same rules apply to everyone? Okay, the bolded part is true—stewards really aren't always consistent—so maybe we could just ignore all the previous races this season where this wasn't penalized (like that bit with Fernando Alonso and Kevin Magnussen at Silverstone). But why didn't the same stewards who later penalized Max even blink during those moments?

image

Sergio Perez went into Kevin Magnussen, who was actually the faster driver. Honestly, he practically rammed him and pushed him off track 🤷 So why wasn't Marcus Ericsson penalized earlier for turning right into Brendon Hartley's Toro Rosso and puncturing his tire? It seems like it only matters for yesterday's race. Same thing later on (around lap 28, if I recall correctly), when Nico Hulkenberg did the exact same thing to Pierre Gasly twice in a single lap—just like he did to Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. And again, no penalty 🤷

As long as the stewards mostly (I don't think anyone else has been hit for this all season besides Max yesterday) don't start penalizing those kinds of moves, these selective penalties seem pretty ridiculous and unjustified to me, even if they would be perfectly valid in some utopian scenario where the stewards actually do their jobs properly . Especially since Valtteri was clearly within the track limits. The official rules state you can move into another car's line while braking, provided you leave enough space—the width of one car. Bottas stayed on track and had that necessary width 🤷 whereas Kevin Magnussen was off track after being hit by Sergio Perez 🤷

Nicholas Newman2 said:Ultimately, Max is mostly just hurting himself. Like I said before, if he keeps thinking this way, he’s never going to be a champion. A perfect example right now is Sebastian Vettel—despite having a dominant car and the fact that he should easily win the championship, he’s sitting exactly where he is in the standings, which leaves me hoping things might somehow swing back toward Mercedes.

Heh, regarding Sebastian Vettel—I saw a stat yesterday showing he lost his front wing in the first lap of Canada 2017. That means in 28 races, he lost it in the opening lap five times. Five times in turn one... basically 18% of his starts. 😬

Anyway, yeah, what you wrote is correct 👍

edit : evo, I went through the full season report. No one besides Max was penalized for situations like yesterday's 🕺 But Sergey Sirotkin got a pretty ridiculous penalty in France: "Note - Sirotkin Had 5 seconds added to his raca time for driving unnecessarily slowly behind The Safety Car." 😬

coastalwolf6 said:Yeah.

Funny.

coastalwolf6 said:So, is hitting Bottas just some imaginary move? I guess—maybe.

It looks like Bottas ran into Max Verstappen.

coastalwolf6 said:If any part of a car—especially the one trailing—gets wedged between the track edge and the car ahead, it’s basically side-by-side at that point. The actual overtaking opportunity... well, it just disappears.

I wonder why Romain Grosjean didn't get penalized there for cutting off Carlos Sainz—he basically steered right into him. I wonder why Perez wasn't penalized today for squeezing—and essentially wrecking—Magnussen. Then again, why wasn't Magnussen punished at the Silverstone Circuit for doing the exact same thing to Alonso? It seems like nobody else has faced any consequences this season, aside from Max Verstappen today.

You seem to be making up rules as you go—since the official regulations actually state there are no closures on... More than a full car width—I guess. You missed a key detail there—Max actually gave Bottas the full width of the car. Bottas was well within the track limits, maybe even staying quite far from them, I guess.

coastalwolf6 said:It seems perfectly clear—despite everything else going on—that Max Verstappen still veers left and clips Valtteri Bottas.

That’s just not how it works. If you look at Bottas's steering before the contact, it's pretty obvious he's turning right into Max Verstappen—I guess.

Honestly, he’s only at fault because he’s trying to defend his position in a scenario where everyone—including a wild driver like Kevin Magnussen against Alonso—has always been allowed to do the same (plus, Kimi's flying lap was just the standard racing line everyone takes) 👍 He probably should have swung even wider to pull a Romain Grosjean in Spain and slam into Valtteri Bottas while being calmly overtaken, since Max isn't defending 👍

Another one for the books: https://streamable.com/dw4co

Perfectly clean. The rules state you have to leave enough room for a full car width in situations like this. Max did exactly that—actually, he gave even more space than required. If Valtteri Bottas can't time his braking, that's on him, yet Max still gets penalized. At least now we know how to drive from here on out—just play kamikaze and ram everyone, because the guy in front will always be the one penalized 🙄 Though, I suppose that only applies if you're driving for Mercedes, since the rules don't seem to apply equally to everyone 🙂

And just as a quick reminder, Sergio Perez wasn't penalized today for doing the exact same thing Magnussen did; he actually smashed a good chunk off the car 😁 Alpine messed up just like Bottas did, but the issue is they aren't in a Mercedes, so the stewards see no reason to review the situation or hand Perez a penalty 😬

And why wasn't Lewis Hamilton penalized in China when he did the same thing to Max? Oh wait, I think we all know why 🕺
F1 Italian GP - Monza (Sept 2, 2018) in Formula 1 ·
Not really. To hit a sharp right-hander properly, you have to drift slightly left first—it's just physics. The faster you go, the more you need that wider arc to prevent the rear end from sliding out and losing control. As for the penalty, it basically means Max had to brake and let Valtteri Bottas through without fighting for it. That’s what the penalty actually implies.

Actually, Kimi did the exact same thing during his qualifying lap at that specific corner—he swung wide to the left to set up the entry for the tight right turn. It is physically impossible to take a corner like that at speeds over 60-40 miles mph without doing it—well, any sharp turn requires moving to the opposite side beforehand to widen the radius: https://streamable.com/3ztyy

image

If you look at how far Kimi drifted left at the exact spot where today's "incident" happened, imagine Bottas being to the left of Kimi. Bottas would have been off the track entirely. Max was a full car width further to the right than Kimi was in that video before entering the turn. Bottas had plenty of room against Max, and Max certainly wasn't diving into him. In today's situation, Bottas was exactly where Kimi was. On that screenshot above, Max was to the right of Kimi. Here is the image again for comparison:

image

Max getting penalized is nonsense.

I mean, if this imaginary maneuvering in the braking zone is going to be penalized, then everyone from P1 to P19 should get flagged—since every single driver does this at almost every corner on every track during a race. Only Position 20 doesn't have anyone to maneuver against, obviously.
F1 Italian GP - Monza (Sept 2, 2018) in Formula 1 ·
And honestly, Magnussen is just useless. He basically sabotaged himself during that mess with Perez today. 🤦 Plus, Alonso dominated him again—pretty much the same thing we saw during qualifying yesterday. 🤣 I'd bet my life that Lance Stroll will become WDC before Alpine actually wins a single Grand Prix. I'm certain of it.

Timothy Castillo6 said:(quoting what I heard live on Sky Sports) Max got a penalty for leaving the braking zone.

What braking zone violation? 🤔 When did that even happen today—aside from being imagined by the stewards?
F1 Italian GP - Monza (Sept 2, 2018) in Formula 1 ·
Let’s be realistic—today's penalty on Max Verstappen feels totally unjustified. I mean, back at the Silverstone Circuit, Kevin Magnussen didn't get flagged even though he shoved Fernando Alonso off the track by about a car and a half (check the image and link below), and he was halfway off himself.

image

So, the Alpine driver escapes punishment for that—I guess the stewards didn't even bother looking at it—yet today, Valtteri Bottas kept all four wheels on the tarmac. We all know how track limits work around here; he was clearly within them, which means Max Verstappen was definitely in the right—he gave him plenty of room, maybe even too much:

image

Besides, Bottas basically just slammed into Max and forced his way off ☕ If he had actually respected the track limits the way he does during qualifying—where the guy practically drifts toward the grandstands at every single turn 🙄—they both probably could have cleared those corners without issue. But honestly, Bottas has been getting on everyone's nerves for a while now, and it seems like Mercedes gets a bit of preferential treatment from the officials. Double standards, I suppose.

I completely missed this earlier—Force Stroll has already overtaken Sauber and sits nine points ahead now. 👍 At this rate, they'll probably cruise into 6th place in the standings without much trouble.

Well, Bottas had one DNF while Kimi Raikkonen had three. Kimi also hit the podium nine times out of the eleven races he finished—that's 82%.
Valtteri was at 6/12—50%.

Just to be clear, I’m talking about the ones causing all the noise, not every single fan out there.

Right at the beginning of the video, Sebastian Vettel claims he was squeezed! 🤣 He practically pushes Lewis Hamilton off the track—though, I suppose, he’s the one being squeezed 😬--if you look at it that way.

Maybe just load up any sim racing game, set it to Indianapolis (avoiding a rolling start this time), and see if you can pull off passing P2 from Pole Position while still keeping P3 in your rearview mirror. That might give you the answer you're looking for.

Henry Wilson34 said:Lujo actually had a decent start today—compared to, say, France or Britain...

Well, I know it wasn't 👍 I suppose the comment was more about how incredibly sturdy the Mercedes is. At Silverstone, after a hit from Kimi, half the grid would probably be sitting in the gravel or limping back to the pits for a massive repair bill. This one just kept going without any real damage at all. 😁
