Look, $333 you could just grab the Radeon HD 4870 instead... honestly, it's a much better pick than either of those NVIDIA options mentioned earlier...
Automotive paint? Yeah, look, it’s actually pretty straightforward if you have even a modicum of an eye for it. Personally, I've messed around with this kind of stuff before, so for me, it was a total walk in the park... but even if you're tackling it for the very first time, it shouldn't really be a massive hurdle to clear.
5-6 damn, that’s frustrating... I was really looking forward to getting some first-hand info because I read somewhere that there wasn't much of a difference even after installing a second vent.. Anyway, why on earth is it getting so hot underneath this old junker? 😬
Looks incredibly clean and aesthetically pleasing 😁 but seriously, does anyone actually see a measurable difference in temps when running one fan versus two on the chassis?
Here is a quick comparison graph of a couple of cards I currently have on hand.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The rest of my setup includes;
MSI 790FX-GD70 AMD Phenom II X4 at 3.6Ghz Quad-core DDR3 RAM
It’s actually pretty interesting to look at how the Radeon HD 4830 in a Crossfire setup stacks up against the GTX 275. Since CoD4 is basically the only game I play... there really isn't much of a dilemma for me regarding which one is the better choice... Heat and noise levels from running two 4830s are about the same as the GTX 275, so I'm not too worried about that part...
Of course you have to paint it. That’s exactly why I suggested it in the first place—it’s the most practical way to go. I mean, surely nobody is actually planning on using cheap, pre-laminated particle board here... what would that even say about us?...
You've had enough of that power supply, I get it... but honestly, why on earth would you pick that specific model? It's an XFX... $67 Cheaper... for... $33 So, you're running a GTX 275 now, I guess...
It’s a massive difference, obviously... but honestly, it isn't much bigger than what you'd see on something like a 4850. That's really the whole point. If you're just rocking a 19" monitor, even a 3870 would be plenty for you. I actually thought you were smarter than that—that you wouldn't fall for the hype. Prestige comes at a heavy price, and it's no different when it comes to hardware. Give it another year and this stuff will cost twice as much as half the price... When you're putting a build together, balance is everything. This specific combo of CPU and GPU just makes zero sense...
A smart move on your part would be picking up some kind of 48xx card—even if that’s honestly total overkill for the processor you're running right now—especially since prices are bottoming out... and they'll only drop further once the 58xx series hits the shelves. Then, down the road in a year or so when you finally swap out that CPU, you can grab a 58xx at a much more reasonable price point, and you'll actually be able to utilize its power properly... though, I have a nagging feeling you're just going to end up buying the latest series anyway 😉
So, I’ve started working on this Borg cube-inspired PC modding project—it looks pretty promising so far. The dimensions are hovering around 40x40x40... I might post some photos later if I actually find the motivation... But what I really need from you all right now is some technical guidance regarding fan placement. My primary goal is to achieve the absolute best airflow possible within this specific layout.
This is roughly how I’ve envisioned the setup, so please, I’m open to any suggestions or critiques you might have.
Thanks, everyone... you can't really tell from the photo, though, since the logo is engraved😁 And no, it isn't chipping off, I took plenty of precautions... I made sure to clean it thoroughly, hit it with a primer, and then applied the paint in thin layers... I've tested it, and even water won't budge it...
