It’s not just happening globally—it's happening right here in America too. I’ve had my posts wiped out just for linking to articles from outlets like USA Today, Fox News, or the Miami Herald. And get this—the articles were actually on topic. So, I'm asking again: why the hell is this happening? Can any of you admins give me a straight answer?
Of course they hand out fines. A buddy of mine just got slapped with an $8,000 penalty—unbelievable. He was over in Canada for a funeral and when he got back, they slapped him with a 10-day quarantine. The guy was naive enough to think ten days meant a full 240 hours. Once that time passed, he headed out to grab some essentials, got pulled over by a state trooper, and—bam! Apparently, he was supposed to be locked down until midnight, not noon, according to their little logic. So there's your fine.
Seriously though. Yeah, that was right at the start—around March, I think—right when they first issued those mandates. Later on, I actually found a pharmacy that wasn't really following the rules that strictly. Eventually, they just gave up on enforcing it altogether. I don't know, do you remember those news stories? Like, how some guy in quarantine would walk straight into a pharmacy to pick up some Advil or something. 🙂
They were asking for an ID just to buy something at the pharmacy. Honestly, what are you supposed to do—just turn around and walk out? You can't exactly grab the pharmacist by the throat over it. I went to three different pharmacies looking for a thermometer and ended up just buying one at DM instead—all because I wasn't in the mood to flash my ID.
What should I pick up? Basically, I just need a CPU, a motherboard, and some RAM—I’ve already got everything else.
Ideally, I want to keep the whole thing around $1,200—$500 and get the absolute best bang for my buck.
The PC is for my brother, who's in high school. It would be great if the motherboard had some decent integrated graphics—nothing crazy, just enough to watch YouTube videos without the whole thing stuttering. I don't care about gaming performance right now; he can save up his own allowance to buy a dedicated card later if he actually wants to play anything.
Look, I get that you're trying to be helpful, but you're totally missing the point. Everything on that Recovery disc is already sitting right there on my installation DVD—I've tried it all. It’s useless to me. What I actually need is a way to have the setup automatically repair my current installation by swapping out the system files while leaving my programs and data completely untouched—exactly how you could do it back with Windows XP.
None of those features exist here, and none of these other workarounds are doing a damn thing for me. I didn't have any Restore points set up. And a backup image? No way—I'm not doing that, especially since it would require 27 GB 😲 of space just to stash the image on another partition—Acronis True Image can't cram all that onto a single DVD. As for the Recovery console... why on earth would I bother messing with that too?
Bottom line: they took one genuinely great feature, tossed it out, and replaced it with a bunch of junk that’s pretty much worthless when your system is actually crashing.
The drive's already been formatted and the backup is tucked away in ASZ, so honestly, a Microsoft employee should be embarrassed for pulling such a stupid move.

But seriously, it feels wrong to expect them to just toss out a brilliant system recovery option—something that worked perfectly back in Windows XP—just like that.

the startup repair tool just tells me "did not find any problem"🙄
And there isn't even an option to repair the installation. It's just gone. All I have is the option to recover the system from some previously made image—which, obviously, I never actually made. My only choice is to just wipe the whole system and reinstall everything from scratch, which means losing absolutely everything I had installed. 🙂
I mean, it's not even a huge deal for me personally since I won't lose any data—I run a multiboot setup (Linux, Windows 10, and two versions of Windows XP) so I've already moved everything to a safe spot. But it's just unbelievable to me that I can't perform a repair that actually saves my stuff, like you could back in the XP days... it's just pointless. 👎
Just slap another 2 GB in there and enjoy—RAM is dirt cheap these days anyway. And seriously, don't listen to the nonsense coming from Daniel Vaughn3. He’s out here acting like he needs nothing more than his Windows 7 setup with every single service disabled, running MS-DOS programs off floppy disks just to play Tetris... honestly, for his "needs," 512 MB is plenty... hell, he'd probably be fine with 64 KB at this rate...
