So, a new Microsoft OS has finally dropped! It’s called Windows 7, basically acting as an extension of Vista. From what I'm hearing buzzing around the web, it might just be Vista with a few extra bells and whistles. Maybe Microsoft is hoping this rebranding helps salvage their latest project—which some people claim is already a total wash. Personally, I don't buy that, but hey, whatever. What do you guys think this will actually turn out to be? Are we looking at a massive leap forward from Windows XP, or just more of the same? What are your expectations?.....

Nobody's gonna pry me off this Windows XP setup until Microsoft drops the price on Vista or Windows 7—I already blew $267 on Windows XP Home.

From what I can tell, Seven is basically just a really polished, well-groomed version of Vista (or whatever Vista was actually supposed to be?).

The stuff that really catches my eye is how much lighter it runs on resources—we're talking a 10-minute install and lightning-fast boot times. Having your Internet Explorer settings saved to your Microsoft account online is a pretty slick move, though it sucks that it only works for Microsoft's own software. It would be killer if it could handle moving things like Application data too, where most apps dump their specific stuff, like a Mozilla Firefox profile.

It feels pretty stupid how Windows just forces IE and Messenger on you. Honestly—they should at least give you the option during installation.

The parts that actually interest me are the lower resource usage, the ten-minute install, and how fast it boots up. Look, I’m not some kind of dedicated hater, nor am I a mindless fanboy looking to bash anyone—I don't really have any skin in the game like that—but honestly, whenever Microsoft rolls out something new, I just can't wrap my head around it. I try to give it a fair shake, I really do, but it just doesn't click for me; it's just not my style. So, naturally, I’m not expecting much from Windows 7 either—certainly nothing revolutionary. Thankfully, over the years, we've seen some much better alternatives emerge that rival Windows itself, so when the time finally comes to move on from Windows XP, at least I'll actually have some decent options to choose from.

Not impressed. Apparently, it’s strictly 64-bit only, so it rejected my system immediately. It’ll take some serious time before this actually becomes a staple on American PCs.

Let’s get one thing straight: I don't understand some of these comments asking "what topic?" or complaining that there is only 64-bit support. You aren't stuck with a 3.5GB limit, and there are 90% fewer viruses. People are just idiots. It was the exact same nonsense when Windows XP launched. Ugh, this is garbage; Windows 98 was the gold standard. Smart guys.

I’ve got an Apple machine, Linux, and XP.
What specific app are you—and I mean *you* specifically—actually running that requires 4GB of RAM?
Are you even sure you remember when Windows XP actually launched?

I think this whole thread won't be worth anything until this "highly anticipated week" actually happens and we can see how things really play out, instead of everyone just acting like they know everything!

BTW, did it ever cross your mind why they're pushing Windows 7 out so fast right after that "perfect" Windows Vista release?
