I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of "allegiance." It’s funny how we use that word in so many different contexts, but it almost always feels like it’s being manufactured or sold to us. We see it in sports, we see it in politics, and we see it in how people choose their career paths or even where they decide to settle down. There’s this constant tug-of-war between what a person actually values and the "prestige" that the world tells them they should value.

I was watching some old footage of my dad’s favorite team the other day—a team that hasn't been relevant in decades—and it struck me how much of our identity is tied to these massive, monolithic institutions. We pick a side, we wear the colors, and we tell everyone that this specific organization represents our soul. But if you peel back the layers, is it because of the culture? Is it because of the specific people involved? Or is it just because that name carries a certain weight when you say it out loud in a room full of strangers?

I remember when I was deciding on a grad program. Everyone in my circle was pointing toward the big-name schools with the ivy-covered walls and the massive endowments. The "prestige" argument was everywhere. It’s a powerful psychological tool. There’s a specific kind of gravity that a historic institution has; it pulls you in by promising that if you just align yourself with them, some of that greatness will rub off on you. It’s a form of social currency. You aren't just joining a program; you're acquiring a badge of legitimacy.

But lately, I’ve been feeling a bit skeptical about that whole way of thinking. I think we’re seeing a shift, or at least I hope we are. I see more and more people—especially in the younger generations—questioning the "tradition" argument. They're looking for something more granular. They want to know about the specific coaching, the specific atmosphere, the specific way a group treats its members, rather than just the logo on the front of the jersey. They want to know if the "vibe" actually matches the "reputation."

There’s a real danger in choosing a path based solely on the "brand." If you commit your time, your energy, and your identity to something just because it's famous, you run the risk of waking up five years later feeling like a stranger in your own life. You realize you joined a monument instead of a community. A monument is something you look at; a community is something you live in.

I wonder if we are reaching a tipping point where the "prestige" factor is losing its grip. In a world where information is everywhere, it’s harder to sell a dream that doesn't have a foundation of substance. You can't just rely on a storied history if the current reality doesn't live up to the myth. I think more people are going to start asking the "why" instead of just accepting the "who."

I'm curious to hear what you guys think about this. When you make a major life decision—whether it’s a career move, a move to a new city, or even just picking a team to follow—how much does the "name" of the institution matter to you versus the actual day-to-day reality of being part of it? Do you think prestige is a valid metric, or is it just a shiny distraction from finding a true fit?
Table Tennis in Other Sports ·
Hey guys, if you’re looking to get into table tennis and have about $40 to $45 to spend, honestly, just buy used rackets. Those cheap ones people are talking about are total junk. For that kind of cash, you can snag a decent pre-owned setup that’ll seriously change how you play—we're talking soft, high-quality rubbers, tons of spin, and a great feel from the wood. It’s all so much better when you actually have a racket that costs $267 brand new, especially since the blade alone is worth about $117 new and stays good forever while rubbers wear out. The only risk is getting ripped off or picking up something with totally worn-out rubber... (I play a lot, so I know how to spot a bad deal!) If you're worried, just bring a buddy who knows the game along to check it out. Seriously, don't be shy about buying used; it’s totally normal in this sport. If you're around Chicago or NYC, check out these links to see what's available. Just a heads-up: if you can scrape together a little more, say $133, you could grab a used blade for $33 that's basically worth twice that, and it'll still be great even if it was played with for a year or two. With the remaining $250-$100, you can easily find both rubbers BRAND NEW!! You might even score a discount at the local Butterfly shop in the city (pretty sure that's the only specialty shop around here). Bottom line: for $300 to $133, you can have a pro-level racket with pro performance. Whatever you do, don't buy those cheap knockoffs from the grocery store!

So, I just switched over to Nada Mihaljčić’s dental practice in Indianapolis! Has anyone here actually been to see her? I heard some wild rumors that she’s super rough and it hurts like crazy, though honestly, I’m a little skeptical about that. If you’ve dealt with her before, please let me know what the deal is! Thanks a bunch!!

Hey guys, can someone point me toward a solid dentist in Chicago? I’ve been hitting the coffee and cigarettes a little too hard lately and my teeth are looking pretty crusty from all the buildup, so I really need a cleaning. Does anyone know how the insurance side works? I have supplemental coverage, but I definitely don't have an extra couple hundred bucks lying around to drop on this right now. If I book an appointment, am I going to get hit with a huge bill? Would love some clarity on how the payments work! Thanks!

Can someone please point me toward a solid dentist in Chicago? I’m looking for someone who takes my insurance so I don't have to pay out of pocket—basically just a regular, reliable visit like anyone else would have. Also, if anyone can explain how the billing actually works, I’d really appreciate it!! Thanks a ton!

Man, he just starts screaming like a total maniac five minutes after the race ends, and honestly, nobody even gives him the time of day! That whole celebration of his felt so unhinged and low-class, just all that shouting
