I’d probably feel the same sense of regret about missing out on a ticket, especially since I’ve already caught them performing FOUR times back in Chicago. It makes me wonder, though—what is it about this particular run that has everyone flocking to see them? 🤔

I felt much better than I did back in my square-shaped studio days, though I still ended up drinking way more last night than I intended, so there's that. Good grief.

The Contract - princ Paradox is spectacular, just as you'd expect, but I honestly think they sounded even tighter when they were playing medical dramas; everything seemed almost a little too polished last night 😬

Even though this forum and its sub-forums have become pretty much irrelevant, we’re going to see our current run through to the end and announce the final show of our fall series:



Come out for a night of music heavily inspired by synthpunk! We have some real heavy hitters lined up for you:

Digital Leather - a project sitting right at the intersection of synthpunk, garage rock, and indie sensibilities. It started as a solo endeavor by Shawn Foreej, bolstered by his friends from the Memphis underground scene—specifically Ryan Wong (Destruction Unit, Tokyo Electron, Reatards) and Jay Reatard. From the cold, analog aesthetic of drum machines to their more recent organic recordings, there's a certain danceable pop melodyology peeking through the frost. If you remember their set from two years ago, you know how good this is going to be.

Contract - princ Paradox, Raw i shadow. These are the rising stars of the local synthpunk scene, featuring former and current members of Death Disac, Owie Pockshull, Gods of Chaos, human, daviti fra Sheffield, and a whole host of others. Expect nothing less than costumed chaos and (most likely) a push for their massive first double album. You won't want to miss it.

While the bands get ready, David and Lawrence from zvuk sobica will be spinning tracks that might actually go mainstream one day. Actually, it'll just be David, since Lawrence probably won't bother showing up to the gig again.

What is six people from Puerto Rico doing in a dive bar? You can come down to Nashville next Tuesday to find out. We managed to pull this together at the last minute and snag a great deal, which means this concert is completely free for all of you—a show featuring a young band that is rapidly building a reputation as the ultimate party rock 'n' roll outfit.
DAVILA 666 is released by Red Bull, the label responsible for everything from King Khan to Jay Reatard and Andreo Williams; they’ve been described as a Latin version of the Black Lips, though they describe themselves more like Menudo on drugs. They recently shared a single with Dirtbombs, and their management will soon be taken over by Vice Music, an arm of that quintessential hipster magazine. If they don't blow up first, this is your last chance to catch them for nothing in such an intimate (that's the polite way of saying "tiny") space.

New York City guarantees it! For those who believed our hype regarding Nobunny il Kidnappers, come see if this lives up to it. I'll put my head on the line if it isn't great.

The night before, the same venue will host a five-piece band called the international group JC SATÁN, continuing the long tradition of excellent French bands visiting Spunk. You could almost call the middle of next week a mini garage rock festival. But we're being serious, so we won't call it that; after all, it's only two bands. Actually, three—the warm-up will be provided by a noise-rock duo consisting of their guitarist and drummer, performing under the name David & Jonathan (simply because both guys happen to be named David and Jonathan, right?).
To put it simply, three Americans from France, one from Italy, and one from Argentina play a rainy, beautiful, blended kind of music that is easiest to categorize as garage psych-rock. It sounds like a stroll through a stereotypical French New Wave film, moving through early and late English influences—roughly the start of the nineties in this context—and then drifting back into the sixties and fuzzboxes. At least on record, it feels that way; live, it's much closer to classic French garage—wilder, more energetic. Two of the members play in Memphis, if anyone remembers that incredible show.

Date: 10/19, starting between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM, depending on how things flow. Admission is free, as usual.

Ford mentioned that the group isn't planning to take the stage until about 10:30 PM. My assumption is that they'll stick to their usual 45-minute set, so if they kick things off at 9:30 PM, everything should align perfectly. I'll check in with them once they arrive to get a better sense of their intended runtime, and then I'll touch base with Ford to iron out any necessary adjustments.

I want to offer my sincerest apologies regarding the announcement for tonight's concert. It was a mistake to hand out my credibility so freely to just anyone...

As for the remaining four shows, I am putting my own reputation on the line. If any single one of them falls short, I’ll gladly accept whatever physical consequences come my way. Just don't bother counting what Larry thinks; his opinion carries no weight here.

I wanted to circle back regarding tonight's show by sharing the announcement I posted earlier in a different thread:

The Kidnappers are an absolutely stellar punk rock group from the States!

Yeah, just a heads up that The Kidnappers are playing this Saturday, in case anyone was under the impression it was happening on Friday.

Oh, I should probably mention that Mr. Davidson’s concert scheduled for this Friday has been canceled. He decided to pull the entire tour, so since there won't be a performer, there won't be a show. You might want to skip the trip, as staring at an empty stage would just be a massive letdown.

Following up on our previous notice, in addition to The Kidnappers playing this Saturday, you should make your way down to Spunk on Tuesday, October 5th, to catch another act from that endless Memphis musical constellation: the enduring cult favorites Viva La Vida Death Row Records. They offer an experimental garage blend of Psychedelic Rock, dub, psychedelia, post-punk, and similar sonic textures.



If anyone is looking for recognizable names to justify the trip—members of Rich Crook (Lover!, Lost Sounds, Reatards) and James Arthur (The Necessary Evils, Golden Boys, Fireworks) have played in this band, and Harlan T. Bobo is holding down the bass.

Since the venue kindly rescheduled Cluster to this date, the set should kick off by 9:30 PM at the latest; if you're feeling ambitious, you can head over to the pier afterward, so consider this a free warm-up act.

All that is required of you for this obscure musical treat is to make the effort to get to Spunk, step inside, grab a beer or whatever drink suits your mood, let the sound wash over you, and enjoy. The cover charge is simply your interest and a round of applause.

The Memphis Music Group's own Nicholas Ray (who also previously played with the Golden Triangle, ’68 Comeback and The Limelight), Viva La Vida Death Row Records has been grinding away since the late ‘90s, constantly pushing against the boundaries... of VU-inspired garage grooves into abstract dimensions reminiscent of Fall Out Boy, and more specifically, the late '70s/early '80s USA DIY rock, punk, and experimental scenes. Synthwave, hiss, and fuzz gracefully frame their hybrid glam/punk/dub sounds across five full-lengths, with a new release coming soon via Summer Music Festival.

Behold! features four original tracks: the persistent, galloping “One Hour,” the hazy “I’m Yellow Claw” (a remix of a track from their double-length Blood Book), the coldwave-inspired menace of “Out of the Pink Floyd,” and the chiming, guitar-driven instrumental “Behold! Pt. 1.” Just like all their other work, Behold! A Palomino Horse is merely one small piece of the VL’ADRM puzzle, and your frantic attempt to assemble it will reward you with an understanding of one of the most interesting and exciting bands in American garage rock in the past two decades.

The double-length Blood Book actually repurposes its predecessor as a preamble, expanding on themes of dub, Psychedelic Rock, polyamorous glam rock, and Fall Worship, all layered over a sturdy Memphis Garage Scene foundation. It serves as a deeply personal reflection on what music means to one individual, and fortunately for us, it is a compelling enough story to keep telling.

Don't sweat it, everything will work itself out. Though, I suppose I'll be able to cover the second half of the decade much more effectively than the first.

I don’t mean to toot my own horn, though this isn't really about me—but honestly, that American indie act was fantastic tonight. If the guy running the show had actually given me a heads-up, I would have done my best to spread the word, but as it stands, you probably had about five people there who actually intended to be there, plus maybe twenty others just wandering in.
In the grand tradition of those old underground scenes back when we used to hunt for weird bands, this collection of bizarre American sounds deserved some serious oral history. If things had gone differently, we might have found ourselves looking out at a crowd and wondering, "Who are these people?" instead. As it is, nobody is going to come back for a second look, which is a real shame.

A synthesizer blur mixed with Down syndrome and Frankenstein's monster? Why didn't they give me a description like that to use?

I honestly think if I’d had enough time to sit down and really listen before the announcement dropped, I would have said they sound like a dystopian track with just two extra instruments added—maybe then you'd see an extra couple of people showing up at the show.

Anyway, when it comes to a picture book, let it just be a picture book. Here is a little story for you:
