The movie is excellent, and you can really tell by the plot that it feels inspired by some real-life event. But I'm struggling with the ending... specifically how Dubois takes Rachel and her lawyer into an interrogation room and threatens the accused with a massive sentence if she doesn't reveal her source. The deal on the table is a two-year sentence. Then we get the epilogue, the two years, and her memory revealing that the secondary source for Rachel's article was actually Erica van Dorn's young daughter. Let me break that down: the primary source for the story was Tim, the agent who told Rachel at a party that Erica van Dorn works for the CIA, which he eventually admitted in court. But for Dubois, that wasn't enough. He sensed there was this other, secondary source out there, and he couldn't figure out if Rachel gave them up or not, especially since she only got two years—was it prison, probation, or what? It’s all a bit blurry in the film. At the very end, in Rachel's flashback, we find out that Erica's little girl told Rachel at daycare,
"My mommy works for The Government." So, now you tell me... what was the actual resolution to the whole story?
