gentlemoose57 said:Let’s not get carried away with speculation right now. We should simply focus on the data we actually have in front of us.

Valtteri Bottas faced no penalties and had zero issues with his race car while maintaining pace ahead of George Russell, who was chasing him down. His pit stop for tires was clocked at a swift 2.2 seconds, which stands in stark contrast to the 4.0 seconds Lewis Hamilton endured. He qualified in 8th, and his retirement occurred very close to that qualifying position.

Sergio Perez secured 2nd in qualifying, but given that he dealt with both a penalty and a spin, his eventual 11th place finish—or whatever position he holds in the race—doesn't really offer much insight into how fast that car truly is.

One cannot overlook the significance of Bottas's qualifying time and his performance through the 30th lap, or indeed any specific lap during that stretch.

If that machine were truly a beast on the track, wouldn't it have found its way toward the front, even starting from 8th?

So, the hierarchy seems to be Red Bull Racing, followed by a significant gap, then Mercedes, then perhaps a brief pause before we encounter the rest of the field.

Furthermore, the fact that Lewis Hamilton managed to set the fastest lap during a stint where he had DRS active along the entire main straight, and managed to overtake Lando Norris without having to extend the battle through Tabmurelo, doesn't actually tell us much about the underlying speed of the car.

If we look back at last season, Bottas was practically invisible during the CNN Turkey Grand Prix. As soon as the rain starts falling, he tends to vanish. Yet, in the very first dry race of this season, his race pace was actually superior to Perez's. We are only two races into the season; can anyone here honestly swear with absolute certainty that Bottas won't find himself on the podium or fighting for the front row in qualifying during the upcoming races?

I wonder, did Valtteri Bottas run into any issues at all?

George Russell's race car compared to his own machine🙄
If we were looking at a dry track, wouldn't Valtteri Bottas be absolutely flying the moment those tires finally reached their optimal operating temperature?

I find myself quite overwhelmed by my current obligations at the moment. I expect to have everything settled by Thursday evening.

Lewis Hamilton is stuck in a car that’s essentially fighting a Williams for P9

If we follow that line of reasoning, then Max's teammate should be out there battling Alpine for 11th place, shouldn't he?🙏

ruggedhawk20 said:Why do you insist on leaning on Lewis's comment about fun overtakes to support your points? That specific remark doesn't serve as evidence at all; if anything, the statement completely contradicts everything you are trying to argue.

It stands to reason that those overtakes were enjoyable for him, simply because they required genuine effort. If he remarked that they were fun, does that necessarily imply they were easy? Quite the opposite, actually—they were fun precisely because they were challenging, because they demanded his absolute best. They weren't just hollow, tedious moments of passing opponents, which would hold no joy whatsoever.

It is truly a rather pathetic mindset to equate ease with enjoyment, don't you think?

I find it quite entertaining to cruise down the interstate in a car with an enviable amount of horsepower and breeze past much slower vehicles. I suspect Lewis felt the same way. However, that doesn't change the reality that he was overtaking cars that were significantly slower than his own.

No matter how you look at it, he essentially handed over that victory through his own blunders.

It is actually quite refreshing to see someone taking the time to scrutinize the numbers. 👍

However, I am afraid I must disappoint you. If one looks closely at section 13 of the official racing regulations, it states quite clearly:
13. Competition results are calculated based solely on the standings published by the FIA immediately following the conclusion of the race (provisional standings). Any subsequent adjustments made by the FIA are not taken into account.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, though in this particular instance, I would argue it represents far more than just a thousand posts from dedicated fanboys.🙏🙏🙏

One truly encounters an endless variety of opinions on this forum, does one not? It ranges from the bold assertion that Mercedes is barely outperforming Williams to those rather colorful descriptions of how a driver might find himself spinning off the track and straight into the catch fencing 🙏

wiredfalcon2 said:Or, to put it in the words graniteharbor502 might use—this race was destined to "separate the boys from the men." Though, in the case of Hamilton, I suppose that rule doesn't quite apply, does it?

Precisely! And isn't that exactly what this entire race demonstrated to us? If it hadn't been for that red flag, I can't help but wonder if Hamilton's performance wouldn't have been an even greater embarrassment. 👍

wiredfalcon2 said:It is quite fascinating when you consider that out of those three races, he managed to secure points in all of them—even clinching a victory in one and taking second place in another. Is it not truly dramatic how easily his mistakes seem to be overlooked?

That is simply the nature of things when you are driving the superior car, isn't it? When the machinery is that good, even significant errors can slip under the radar unnoticed. However, one must consider that this season, Mercedes-Benz no longer holds such a massive advantage over Red Bull Racing, which means those mistakes will eventually come due. I find myself expecting more of these errors from Lewis now that the pressure is truly mounting.
2021 Emilia Romagna GP (Imola) | April 16-18 in Formula 1 ·
Actually, this situation in Germany brings my mind right back to 2019. It feels as though we are witnessing a pattern emerging, doesn't it? This marks the third consecutive rainy race where Hamilton makes those critical errors and slides right off the track—first in Germany back in 2019, then in Turkey in 2020, and now this current mess.

ruggedhawk20 said:Max is quite fortunate that both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko favor him so heavily, ensuring the entire team's operations revolve around his needs; furthermore, he benefits from having Adrian Newey designing his car while enjoying the power of what is arguably the strongest engine on the grid from Honda.

And you seem to have overlooked the most vital element of all: he is incredibly lucky to be the greatest talent we have seen in the last thirty years.👍

vividlynx68 said:That isn't quite what I am getting at. My point is simply that he slammed into the barrier, snapped a wing, kept his composure, threw it into reverse, rejoined the track, and just carried on with the race. Can anyone else recall similar displays of grit?

Vettel Interlagos 2012

During that particular Grand Prix, it felt as though nearly every driver was spinning off into the gravel, yet they all managed to maintain enough presence of mind to scramble back onto the asphalt, while the retirements were largely driven by direct on-track collisions. Does one not recall how Charles Leclerc went wide during the warm-up lap and possessed the sheer decisiveness to rejoin, or how Carlos Sainz found himself dancing through the gravel multiple times? Even drivers like Yuki Tsunoda, Sergio Perez, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, Nicholas Latifi, Nikita Mazepin, Michael Schumacher, and even Max Verstappen all found themselves wandering off the racing line at various points, yet miraculously, no one was forced to call it a day.

vividlynx68 said:Luck? 😁 Look, you all know I’m not exactly sitting in his corner, but when was the last time someone pulled off an overtake like that after such a massive excursion? I am not even talking about him fighting his way back up to second place afterward. When was the last time anyone actually managed to drive forward at all following a crash of that magnitude?

When was the last time an SC and a red flag flew right after someone had a wreck like that? And I am specifically referring to the top three teams.
2021 Emilia Romagna GP (Imola) | April 16-18 in Formula 1 ·
Douglas Roberts49 said:And what about when he spun out just before the SC came out? He really caught a lucky break there, because otherwise, he would have been trailing far behind the pack.

Now, while it is true that Max didn't exactly have a flawless weekend, should we really be comparing that minor excursion to that massive blunder made by Lewis Hamilton??
2021 Emilia Romagna GP (Imola) | April 16-18 in Formula 1 ·
Larry Rivera83 said:Max won simply because he was lucky enough that nobody else caught a break... honestly, isn't this entire sport fundamentally built upon nothing but pure luck?

That might be true, but one must consider that Max didn't spin off the track and smash into the barriers, right? As for Lewis securing second place, isn't that just sheer fortune? While Max certainly benefited from having a car that didn't suffer a mechanical failure, I would argue that his driving performance throughout this race was significantly superior to that of Lewis.
