Scott Collins30 said:Look, nobody was walking around before the Olympics claiming our sailors were going to sweep five medals; if you actually looked at the stats, people were being realistic and figuring we had a shot in maybe three classes. If anything, Fantela and Marenić underperformed, because honestly, they should have been much higher up there on the podium. As for Gašpić and Stipanović, everyone knew it was going to be a dogfight. It was especially brutal in the finals where you could just tell Ainslie and Danac were playing on a different level, leaving half a dozen other guys scrambling just to fight over a single medal. Is it a failure? Maybe. Is it a total disaster? Not by a long shot. And pulling their funding would be pure insanity—these athletes are still so young, and over the next eight years, they’ve got nothing but upward momentum to build on.☕

what town are we even talking about?
Look, even without my fellow American Einstein pointing it out, everyone knows baseball is huge in Japan and throughout Central America, just like how people are obsessed with karaoke and speed dating—so what?
We’re sitting here debating all-time sports legends, but since this is an open internet forum, names like Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb don't mean squat to the average person here.☕
A local reality TV star would probably be more famous around here!
The-End, get real.

Fair point, honestly. I probably wasn't being as precise as I should have been there, since what I was really trying to get at was the heart of it—you know, that whole central stretch running from Mexico down through Venezuela.

shadowridge14 said:American football is the same deal, so have you ever even heard of the small-town legends back in rural Ohio?☕
Of course those "United States" types are a massive demographic force and the biggest propagandists out there, but that doesn't make cricket—or what folks at a local county fair might call "sticks and stones"—some kind of global heavyweight on par with actual major sports!☕
Honestly, 99% of people in America would much rather go to a backyard fish fry in a small town than worry about some high-brow magic trick or whatever else is trending.

Well sure, I guess if we're judging the popularity of a sport solely by how many people in your tiny little hometown play it, then you've got a point. But just for the record, baseball didn't actually evolve from cricket; it came from rounders. And besides the USA, baseball is huge in Japan and pretty much all over Latin America too...

I was just sitting there, staring at the ceiling and thinking about how much everything seems to be falling apart lately, and honestly, I can't help but feel like we're all just drifting through this chaotic mess without a compass. It’s one of those things where you try to find some sort of order, some kind of structure in the madness, but then you realize that most of what we call "stability" is just an illusion we've collectively agreed to believe in so we don't lose our minds. It reminds me of this time back in Chicago when I thought I had my whole life mapped out, perfectly organized, only to have a single unexpected turn throw the entire plan into total disarray. We spend so much energy trying to build these mental frameworks, these little systems to keep us safe, yet life just keeps throwing curveballs that make those systems look absolutely ridiculous. It’s exhausting, really, dealing with the constant flux of it all while everyone else acts like everything is perfectly fine. jadeskipper74 says:
Look, I’m sorry, man, but I just can't get behind that. To me, Joe Biden is a much bigger sporting legend—I mean, the guy's a world champion in lawn bowling, for crying out loud—compared to that Ruth character, who claims to be an "athlete" in what kind of damn sport exactly???!!!
Who else is actually playing this game besides those damn Americans who completely butchered rugby by forcing everyone to wear helmets and groin guards and then had the nerve to call it football? It’s pure blasphemy against the spirit of the sport. At least there are more than three countries out there that play a real sport instead of whatever that mess is!☕

You know, I was sitting there thinking about how much the sports landscape has shifted, and it hit me that baseball actually commands a massive following—I mean, if you look at the numbers, more people are obsessed with baseball than those two combined: handball and water polo. It’s kind of wild when you really sit down and crunch the popularity metrics in your head, isn't it? It just goes to show how certain traditions in the States just take root and grow until they overshadow everything else, leaving those niche sports struggling to find an audience while everyone else is glued to the diamond. ☕

Daniel Booth37 said:Sure, it’s all about that American influence. In terms of actual global sports history, he barely registers on the radar.

I mean, you can't just claim someone who stands as one of the greatest players to ever step onto a field—maybe even *the* greatest—has a negligible footprint in sports history just because baseball isn't a household name everywhere you look. It feels like a bit of a logical stretch to me. Honestly, trying to draw objective comparisons between sports that aren't truly global phenomena is a losing game; baseball might be relatively niche outside certain regions, much like how handball is basically a ghost sport in large parts of the world...

Daniel Booth37 said:but honestly, some of them aren't really even that great because they function more like media icons than actual athletes performing miracles (Babe Ruth and Cassius Clay come to mind, though I know plenty of people will jump down my throat over that).

That's exactly it, though personally, I have to disagree.😉
I honestly don't know where we go from here, because watching the way things are heading feels like staring directly into a sun that’s just about to go supernova, you know? It’s that constant, exhausting friction between people who think they have all the answers and those of us who are just trying to make it through the week without losing our minds. Everything feels so polarized lately, so loud, and frankly, a little bit ridiculous if you take a step back to look at the big picture. I was sitting in a coffee shop in Seattle the other day—just minding my own business, nursing a lukewarm latte—and listening to two people argue about politics like their lives depended on it, and it hit me how much energy we waste on this endless cycle of outrage. It’s wearying, really. We’ve become a society that thrives on being offended, building these massive walls around our own little ideological fortresses, and then acting shocked when we can't communicate with anyone on the other side. It’s like we’re all shouting into a void, hoping for an echo that validates us, rather than actually engaging in some sort of meaningful dialogue. I find myself getting more and more cynical about the whole spectacle, wondering if there's even a point to participating in the noise anymore, or if we're all just spinning our wheels in the mud while the world keeps turning regardless of our heated debates. It’s just... heavy, man. Everything is just so incredibly heavy. kaže:
I honestly don't give a damn about him anymore. I’ve been sick of his act ever since the Olympics. It was like, the second he stepped off that podium with a medal around his neck, the whole bidding war and blackmailing bullshit started regarding his move to a new team. What an absolute jerk.

Terry Reed13 said:I mean, seriously, give me a break. This guy stands there, basking in the glow of just winning a medal, and then—literally less than twenty-four hours later—he’s already dropping hints about hanging it up and walking away from the sport. I don't get it. Who does that? You reach the summit, you grab the hardware, you finally get the validation you've been grinding for, and instead of celebrating, you start picking out your retirement shoes. It’s such a mood killer, honestly. Just one day after the glory, he's already talking about checking out. What a way to ruin the moment.

Look, everyone, can we please stop spreading absolute nonsense about things you clearly don't understand? I mean, honestly. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion—if you love him, fine, if you hate him, that’s your business too—but let's not start peddling blatant lies as if they were gospel. It’s exhausting. People are acting like Jakob Fak somehow decided to start bidding on stuff and playing extortion games the very day after he secured his medal, which is just ridiculous. Sure, the media went into a frenzy over those rumors because, well, sensationalism sells and they needed something juicy to chew on, but Jakob hasn't said a single word about any of that. He's stayed quiet, yet here we are, making up stories out of thin air.

The bar would hold just fine; the only thing left behind would be the dent you leave in the bench itself.

I used to have one just like this:

You just unscrew the housing to expand it, which makes it easy enough to fit into pretty much any door frame you encounter. I remember trying to fix up an old rental in Chicago back in the day and realizing how much easier life gets when you don't have to custom-build everything from scratch. Anyway, you can usually snag one on eBay for something like ten bucks

graniteseal33, I really don't want to get bogged down in the weeds of your post because, honestly, I don't know the first thing about the subject matter, and if I’m being totally blunt—I don't much care to learn.

But, just regarding the whole idea of using American as a non-native language—🙏 🙏 🙏

you can't exactly "run and jump" into skydiving like you're jumping off a pier

So, this is basically how things looked down at the Sibelius pier towards the end of July:

The cost was just $73, and if you wanted $20 to have everything burned onto a DVD—and I mean per disc, not per person, so you could actually split the cost with a few friends if you were feeling frugal—it was a steal. Honestly, such a great deal, and the crew hanging out on the bridge were absolute legends.

If you really want the lowdown on flag football, you should probably just ask the people actually out on the field playing it, because they’re the ones running with much stricter rule sets. Personally, whenever I played touch football, it was usually just casual pick-up games with a pretty eclectic mix of people—you’d have a couple of guys who play varsity American football, some old buddies, maybe a girl from around the neighborhood or something—and we basically hashed out the rules on the fly before every single game, even though the core fundamentals stayed the same:

In theory, you can play with any number of players you want, though I think standard flag football is usually seven-on-seven, with at least five being the bare minimum. I’ve definitely played touch with even fewer than that.

There’s no snap involved. The QB just picks up the ball and has the right to count out loud, like "one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi, three-Mississippi," and only then are you allowed to rush him. In a lot of different versions, especially when you’re playing with a small group, the QB isn't even allowed to run the ball down the field.

Forget about field goals; you just punt.

And the stiff arm—whatever that's called here 😁—is totally off-limits.

As for extra point conversions, we mostly did one point from five yards out, two points from twenty, and three points from thirty.

Whenever we had a mixed crowd and enough girls showing up to play, we’d add extra layers of rules, like making sure a male QB couldn't hook up with a male WR for two consecutive drives, and stuff like that.

Adam Moore said:It’s honestly like asking why people bother with little local soccer leagues when everyone can just play professional FIFA matches. They are two entirely different beasts with their own sets of rules, and frankly, flag football is perfect for those recreational players who aren't looking to end up in an ER because they can't afford a serious injury—something you see way too often in tackle football. At its core, flag football is a non-contact sport.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Even though my competitive years were strictly spent playing full-contact ball, I’ve definitely jumped into a game of flag—or touch football, where the defense stops once they tag you with both hands, which is basically the same thing—whenever the old crew got together. It really is night and day; both have their own unique perks, but the mindset and the goals for the people playing them are worlds apart.

It’s actually pretty heartening to see that here in the States, there are enough enthusiasts to keep this sport alive, and instead of all the constant nitpicking and belittling we see online, we should really be cheering on anyone who puts in the work to support, organize, and push for any sport they love.

Hey everyone,

So, I was just sitting here thinking—does anyone out there have plans for some offshore sailing soon? I’ve got the boat ready to go, but I'm currently lacking a decent crew to actually make it happen.😁
