Or, if you want to be proactive, buy one at a drugstore and wrap it up yourself with some paper or twine. If not, they'll just charge you for the packaging at the counter.

Because let's be honest, paying for a larger box at the Post Office is definitely going to cost you more.$3.25.
Thanks for the help, ladies! 🙂
Olivia Green46 said:It’s definitely pretty bulky—I actually had to ship a heavy jacket once myself. Just toss it into a sturdy box. You can send it off as a standard package through $6.00.
Thanks for getting back to me, 🙂

Just one more thing: can I just pick up a box directly at the Post Office, or am I going to have to hunt one down somewhere else?
Hey everyone,
I could really use a bit of advice here. I need to ship a bulky down jacket out to San Francisco, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to pack it. Should I go with a sturdy cardboard box, or is there a better option?
I haven't actually sent anything this heavy before; usually, I just stick to those padded bubble mailers for smaller things.
Also, does anyone happen to know what the typical shipping rates look like for a package like this? Specifically, if I want it sent via registered mail from LA-SF, what am I looking at?
Thanks a million! 🙂

Just grab some of that classic brown kraft paper—you know, the heavy-duty stuff—wrap it up tight, seal it well, and tie it all together with some rustic twine. It’s simple, effective, and honestly, much more aesthetic than those flimsy cardboard containers. Why overcomplicate things when you can just do it right with the basics?👍
If you’re really that desperate to get your hands on one of those boxes, you could always just swing by your local post office. Honestly, they toss them out like they’re nothing, so you might as well see if they’ll let you take one for free. Why make things more complicated than they need to be?🤷
Sure, I’m already well aware of the student loan situation—that was definitely one of the avenues I was considering. But honestly, I just want to keep it on the table as a backup plan in case my search there turns up nothing. 🙂 Thank you! 🙂
Elizabeth Brown90 said:First, you put it in a box. Then, you wrap it up in paper. You add the twine to secure everything, and finally, right beneath your return address, you clearly state the declared value. It’s really that simple, isn't it? Is there any other way to ensure this actually gets handled correctly? $33In your post, you’re suggesting that I should send this via a parcel service, implying that I would need to handle the shipping myself? Is that really how you see this working? $4.25😉
Thank you so much! 🙂
And now, just one more thing—where on earth am I supposed to get a box? Is it even possible to just pick one up at the local Post Office, or am I going to have to go hunting for one? Any advice would be appreciated. 🙂
Could I get a little bit of help here, please? 🙏
My apologies if this has already been covered somewhere else on the forum 😉
Since this is the first large shipment I’m planning to send out, I was wondering if someone could walk me through the best way to pack a heavy down jacket? Should I just toss it in a plastic bag before sliding it into a cardboard box? What’s the standard procedure at the post office? I need to get this package sent over to San Francisco.
Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can give! 🙏
Oops, I completely missed this open thread! Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction 🙂
Excuse me, I noticed that the discussion thread regarding Yorkshire Terriers has been locked for quite some time now. Does anyone know when we might see that topic reopened? 🙏
Thanks 🙂
P.S. My apologies if this question is being asked in the wrong section
