Best external hard drives to buy right now? in Computer Peripherals ·
I’d recommend a WD external drive. Generally speaking, when it comes to internal drives, stick to smaller capacities—say, 250GB. Why? There are so many perks to going external. You can just unplug it when you don't need it so it isn't spinning constantly. And there's no point obsessing over 200-$133; the data you're saving is far more valuable. Regardless of what you choose, always keep a backup. You never know when things might go sideways.

Ahem...

I agree that Windows Vista wasn't a total disaster. But that only applies to the business and Ultimate versions. I spent nearly a year testing those, and honestly? They were fine. My HP laptop—dual core 2.2, 2GB RAM, Nvidia—didn't feel bogged down at all. On that exact same machine, Windows 7 runs perfectly. I tested the 4-month beta, and it’s actually superior to the final release version. I even revived an old machine—an AMD 2800+ (1.60) with 512MB RAM and integrated Nvidia graphics—installed Windows 7 on it, and it flies. It's faster than Windows XP.

After testing Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 side-by-side, I reached a few conclusions (not that I can remember everything):

Vista impressed me with its data transfer speeds between partitions and to USB drives. Even burning DVDs was seamless. I didn't even need third-party software because Vista handled it perfectly. Transfer speeds on XP are the slowest, and while Windows 7 is slightly better than XP, it still doesn't touch Vista's speed.

Vista has solid security. Catching a Trojan on XP feels like a daily occurrence, but not with Vista. Windows 7 takes another step forward compared to XP, though I'm not sure if it's quite on par with Vista.

When it comes to system load, Vista is the heaviest, and Windows 7 is the lightest. Isn't it fascinating to look at how many processes XP needs just to function normally? It uses twice as many as Vista and 2.5 times as many as Windows 7.

Software and drivers:

XP—it's pure idiocy with the service packs. Why haven't they just released one full service pack that combines 1, 2, and 3?

Vista—I love Windows Update. It works flawlessly, and you can easily burn a CD with drivers to go with it. I had zero issues there, whereas I struggle much more trying to burn everything on XP.

Windows 7—Windows Update worked fine on the beta, but the release candidate is glitchy. I assume it's due to the OS itself. The beta was smooth, but the release version is problematic. For example, my wireless printer connected via the router; the network test passed, but Windows 7 wouldn't recognize the printer, even though the beta recognized and installed it instantly.

P.S. I don't see the point of Windows 7 Ultimate if it only offers two extra features: Multilanguage and BitLocker, which might actually cause more harm than good.

P.S. Indexing on both Vista and Windows 7 is perfection. On XP, you have to install separate software, and it performs terribly—slow and unreliable. 😁

Et cetera...

P.S.

I don't understand why people trashed Vista so much. Most people were using the home version, which is pretty stripped down. But then again, there's a huge difference between the various XP editions like home, Pro, and Corporate too...

Heading to bed now... my brain is fried. 😁

If I hit a wall, I'll be calling you. 😉

The motherboard will actually list the memory type, like DDR 400 MHz.
