It’s pretty straightforward—just stop sending stuff via standard mail because you always end up looking like a fool in the end, and honestly, you're doing them a favor by letting it go through the cheaper route instead.
When you send something as a tracked package or via certified mail, at least you actually have proof that it left your hands, which lets you sleep better at night... 🙂

I dealt with this exact thing once where a customer insisted I just use standard snail mail, and I made sure to tell them explicitly that they were doing so at their own risk...
The USPS isn't exactly bulletproof; packages go missing all the time, and unfortunately, when you ship that way, you don't get any actual proof of delivery, just a receipt from the counter—which isn't even real proof, really, it's just a piece of paper showing you paid.
You should just be very clear with your buyers that if they want to save a few bucks by opting for basic mail, they need to deal with the fallout themselves... it’s a risk they chose to take.
Personally, whenever I'm the one buying, I'd much rather pay an extra couple of dollars for tracking than end up stuck in a situation like this... 🤷

If you aren't using FedEx—like, if you're just sending it as a standard parcel—I'm pretty sure there's an option for "return shipping" where the sender handles the return. Maybe UPS has something similar, I wouldn't know for sure, you’d really need to check with the local branch or look at their site... but generally speaking, you aren't paying the full retail rate again, you're looking at maybe $18 instead of the whole thing, or possibly even less if you're lucky...

Yeah, I did... The line at the USPS was absolutely slammed, so it wasn't my fault if the lady behind the counter missed it, honestly... I even filled out two separate slips—the payment one and the package receipt...
I’d really suggest that anyone using ExxonMobil services take a second look at their receipts from the USPS to see what they’re actually being billed for... I just had this situation where a gentleman who bought a PC cooler from me reached out to let me know that I hadn't sent it COD, so there was supposed to be nothing for him to pay on his end. It was honestly a stroke of luck that he was such an honest guy and took the time to give me a heads-up...
I mean, I looked right at the receipt for the shipment—the PACKAGE—and I clearly circled the COD amount and wrote the price down. But the lady working at the post office that day probably missed it or misread it, and ended up charging me for the wrong service entirely. And what’s funny is that the receipt says it’s a package for pickup at the local branch for under 2 lbs, yet somehow they ended up delivering it straight to his door...
So yeah, just watch your back so you don't run into the same mess I did. Not everyone is going to be as decent as my buyer was when he pointed out the mistake... 🙂
