Back everything up, boot from a CD, and just go for a clean installation!

Right, right, you already posted the link to this thread on the previous page, so I just assumed it was standard practice...

I can help with that...

Here’s my setup: I was running Windows Vista Ultimate—it was rock solid, an OEM build, worked like a charm. I had everything from Photoshop, ConvertXtoDVD, and Ashampoo Burning studio 9 to Avira, a-squared free, Microsoft Office 2007, and Virtual PC 2007 installed. That should cover just about everything you're wondering about... Just pop in your Windows 7 Ultimate DVD (make sure the editions match, like Vista Pro - 7 Pro or Ultimate-Ultimate) and start the installer. It’ll actually give you a heads-up about which software might struggle on 7 and suggest you uninstall them first. After that, just select UPGRADE and you're set. It takes a bit longer than a clean install, but you get to keep all your documents right where they were, along with all your network settings, wired or wireless. Almost all my programs worked immediately, except for Avira and Virtual PC, which needed a quick reinstall. Just a heads-up: I ended up grabbing a new version of Virtual PC, specifically one with the XP mod, though I eventually ditched the XP mod because I couldn't be bothered to reconfigure everything. My old virtualan XP runs perfectly fine with all the old settings preserved (and yes, Virtual PC 2007 works on 7)... Overall, it was a smooth transition. That said, my Vista was running beautifully, so if yours is behaving, go ahead and upgrade. But if you're already fighting with Vista, those headaches might just follow you over to 7... All I can say is BRAVO, Microsoft...
