Jenson Button admits McLaren is struggling to wrap their heads around the new car

Jenson Button has admitted that McLaren is having a hard time understanding their 2013 machine and finding any kind of consistent pace.
.....

"It's been very tricky to understand where the car is," he said.

"At times the car feels good, at other times it doesn't.
......

And the actual racing hasn't even kicked off yet. 😂

Young Sergio is also noting some unexpectedly high tire wear.
"It's extreme. It's very, very difficult the degradation - it's a big surprise," Perez told reporters.

"Normally we see in winter testing a lot of degradation, but never this much. We are going to have sometimes cold races like here, so it's a bit of a worry, but we are still learning about the tyres and once we go racing I hope things can change with the tyres."

Is it the new Pirellis, or the new MP4-28?
Maybe it's both.

Given how radically different the front suspension on the new MP4-28 is compared to last year's MP4-27, wouldn't you say that a significant portion of the credit actually belongs to the new chassis?

I'm not so sure the flaws he carries are actually fixable

Mark even mentioned that they should probably introduce an extra starting slot just for him 🤣😁
We'll know if Mark won't pull it off 😳

Lauda was highlighting how good Lotus was all through last season.
Yeah, the same Lauda you claim is constantly talking nonsense and doesn't have a clue about anything.
☕

Niki Lauda.
When it comes to the accuracy of these forecasts and analyses, where do they actually stand? Honestly, they’re about on par with Gary Anderson's.
Then again, Gary Anderson actually has a track record. He’s handled car design before and he’s certainly seen some success. Doesn't that count for something?
Did Lauda ever actually get a single prediction right? Not that I can recall. 😁

He'll end up siding with Ferrari. Typical. 😢

So, anyway... Photos from day two of testing in Austin..

Mercedes is playing around with exhaust chemistry. Meanwhile, Ferrari? They’re running a ridiculously small rake.

stormybadger8 said:And why on earth would they ban it?😕
That Williams bodywork is basically just a cutout in the floor, which is perfectly legal.😳
So what's the issue? If a hole in the floor is fine, then this should be too.🤷

To reiterate:
Jason Campbell70 said:The exhaust is likely legal. It's just that if they don't crack down on this, we'll see an influx of similar setups. Things would spiral out of control quickly, and that's clearly something the FIA—with Charlie Whiting leading the charge—wants to avoid.

Tyler Bennett5 said:It looks like they’ve finally sorted out that hub hole issue on the FW35 to make sure everything is strictly by the book.
Now the big question is just how much of an advantage that actually nets them.
As for the exhaust, I suppose they'll be scrambling to get that legalized before we hit Australia.

The exhaust should technically be within the rules. It’s just that if they don't crack down on this, we'll see a flood of similar workarounds. Things would spiral toward the extreme pretty quickly, and that's clearly something the FIA—with Charlie Whiting at the helm—wants to avoid.

It looks like I finally figured it out—the air meant to cool those front brakes is actually escaping through
a gap in the front wheel nut.

Interestingly enough, the FW35 had caps on its hubs.
Yet they ran their testing rounds with those caps off—leaving the hub openings exposed.

Regarding blowing hot air through the hub: if memory serves, Red Bull tried something similar mid-season a while back, only for the solution to be declared illegal.

The rear end design is particularly intriguing... my first thought was that the lack of certain surfaces might trigger turbulence since the airflow loses its path so abruptly. But clearly, the engineers at the factory know exactly what they’re doing.
The front wing also feels quite distinct compared to the rest of the field.

However, I just read that the exhaust configuration they unveiled today was actually banned by the FIA.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/21508634

I actually noted that same thing last season.
The reality is, there's bound to be some level of turbulence above that gearbox. But can you mitigate it? Perhaps with a slim air guide. Look at the F138. A thin shark fin and the sidepod.

If we're talking aerodynamic gains, a compact gearbox is almost always an advantage. That’s why the F138 went with a "compact gearbox," following the lead of the Williams cars from the previous two years.

In my opinion, though, Ferrari utilized that compactness much more effectively.
Williams used the extra space above the gearbox—right in front of the beam wing.
Ferrari used that compactness to clear space above the gearbox, but even more so beneath it—directly in front of the diffuser.

And let's be honest: optimizing the diffuser is a far bigger win than optimizing the beam wing.

Nothing is officially illegal yet. Legality isn't even truly scrutinized during pre-season testing.
We won't know until Melbourne.

Also, does the front wing endplate look a bit more "open" to me?

The new Williams looks aggressive.
Dangerously aggressive. 😁

The FW35 nose reminds me of the F138, while the rear end of the F138 looks just like the FW35. 😁

The exhaust setup is interesting too, using a flow director similar to what we're seeing on the new Caterham.
I suspect the guys at Williams were just waiting to see what everyone else brought to the table before rushing to copy them over the last ten days. 😁

Syrup is just what we call whey, and proteins are proteins... maybe learn some basic terminology first.

Syrup:

Check the label before you claim it's "good."

The ingredients in those two products differ, sure. But is there really a difference in actual results? Not when you consider this is just someone starting out.

You won't notice a difference.
Just go with whatever is cheaper or easier to find.

That’s an interesting way to mount the radiator. No wonder their sidepods look so narrow.

My first thought? It looks just like the Brabham BT52. By the way—that BT52 is a gorgeous machine.

They completely overhauled the front suspension, redesigning it specifically to widen the setup window. They had to fix the mess from last season when Kimi was constantly fighting the car's handling right out of the gate.
The hump remains, and the rear end is an evolution of last year's diffuser. This makes perfect sense because, by the end of the season, the entire Lotus concept proved itself to be stellar. From its debut in India—where it struggled with top speed—all the way through to Brazil, the exhaust setup showed progressively better results race after race. Obviously, there is still plenty of room to push further and find more gains.
And here is the crux of what worked for Lotus: stick to evolving 😬 a proven concept that already delivers great results, rather than gambling on radical redesigns that might fail to meet expectations entirely.

As for these testing times? They likely mean absolutely nothing. We won't see the real situation until we hit the track in Australia.

They were regular podium finishers during the first half of the season. It wasn't until the second half that Lotus actually started losing ground.

I wouldn't say a word if Lotus had been overwhelmingly dominant over their competition last year. But they weren't.

shadowhawk24 Asks:
What made you think the E21 was actually an E20?
Is it an evolution of last year's car? Sure. Most cars follow that path. But is last year's machine actually comparable? Not really. 🙂

Yeah. Evolution, clearly lacking any real spark of originality.

Evolution is what defines the F138—but we’re talking true evolution here. It's visible in every single millimeter of the car.

William Bennett53 said:It seems far easier to simply root for the mainstream drivers. 😁Vettel always has this dedicated core of supporters who never seem to find anything to complain about. Alonso, on the other hand, has an endless crowd behind him, including at least one individual who reports every single minor slip-up... honestly, if you follow the usual online forums—which I find myself forced to do—you'll occasionally see these soap opera fans bickering among themselves, demanding penalties for any perceived insult directed toward their favorite icons. 🤣

But let's move past all that and get back to our own discussions.

What are your thoughts on the general consensus that Sauber and Renault were the standout performers of the first round of testing? Personally, those two are my absolute favorite teams, and seeing them actually become competitive this season would be nothing short of a dream come true. 🙏

In what way exactly is Renault the star of this test?

Is it because they tried to pass off last year's car as a "brand new" model?

Long live the king! 👋

William Bennett53 said:That's exactly right, Drew Bennett68! 🙏
I am asking you the same thing.
A few months back, when we spent those few days hanging out in the paddock, we had a pretty candid debate about what everyone on this forum actually wants regarding moderation in Formula 1. Specifically, we talked about how to effectively shut down trolls who make a habit of attacking drivers, teams, and the members of those teams. Our stance on that issue was made very clear during that discussion.

So there it is.

Besides— ignorance of the law excuses no one. 😁

No offense intended toward anyone. I just needed something to kill time while waiting for the next race of the season.
2013 Car Reveal & Winter Testing Kickoff in Formula 1 ·
Based on what we've seen so far, Centotrentotto shows the most promise.

We’re following this season through one central theme: VETTEL IS THE CANCER, ALONSO IS THE ANSWER! 😁
If we can just get rid of that German tumor, isn't it about time? After six long years, it's time for the champion to reclaim his spot as the best driver—the kind of driver who actually earns his title on the track.

Hasta la victoria siempre!
Fernando Campeon!

Given that the Sauber looks absolutely insane—and I mean insane, insane, insane

it's about time. After years of playing it safe and being super conservative, someone finally went for a radical design. I'm rooting for them. That car is definitely gonna kill it at Monza, if nothing else. Too bad we don't have the old Hockenheim anymore, because they would've been favorites there too.

The same Monza where the car was running 12 miles/h slower on the speedtrap two seasons ago?

LOL.
