Vettel's just doing his thing, routine as ever.

And every single time, he just kept making a bigger fool of himself. 😁

Elizabeth Mendoza said:Go ask Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, or whoever else fits the bill.

The guy is a total wildcard. A complete loose cannon. It’s basically a done deal that he’s leaving Mercedes at the end of the season, so he might as well show some backbone. He should just tell them to get lost on the track.

You mean like announcing he’s leaving, only to stubbornly insist on staying?

On a track like this, pulling off a block should be pretty straightforward. Even for Valtteri Bottas.

I see. 😁

Well, there we have it. A clean overtake. 🙏🙏🙏

Maestro is predictably brilliant right out of the gate.

A pretty lackluster take on the anthem, but at least the Dutchwoman is the genuine blue-eyed original.

Come on, he actually went into detail about why he didn't just hit the restroom before the race started. 😁

My gut feeling is that most teams will play it safe and opt for a more conservative approach, sticking to a slower delta just to see how long those tires actually hold up. Overtaking is such a nightmare on this circuit; every pit stop feels like a setback, leaving you stuck in a grind trying to move up through the field where even a fresh set of rubber might not give you the edge you need.
That's my take for anyone driving outside the Top 3.

It’s all about the aerodynamics.
Leading up to Silverstone, they struggled with the floor and diffuser failing to generate enough downforce. They had to compensate by running a ridiculously oversized rear wing, which killed their top speed on the straights.
Since Silverstone, they've switched to a lower-drag setup. The total downforce remains steady, but with significantly less drag, so they're looking much better on the straights now.

All this talk about losing 20 HP because of where the air temperature sensors are placed? Just more nonsense fed to the press by Karen Horner to shake things up at Mercedes-Benz.

Raymond Anderson4 said:If the start-finish straight were just a little longer, or if there was one more sweeping turn before the line, this would easily be in my top three tracks on the calendar.
But that’s not how it works.

If the main straight had more length, we'd basically see a repeat of Portugal—nothing too exciting, just endless DRS battles on the straight.

We should wait for the race first. Then we can judge.

Raymond Anderson4 said:If my read on this is correct, those stiffer components seem to suit Mercedes much better.
I honestly think Mercedes holds the edge even without the tire advantage. To me, they look stronger through the slower corners where you really need that front end to dive deep into the turn without sacrificing stability.

Santa Monica is basically just the Hungaroring with a few banked turns.
Since Mercedes was so dominant at the Hungaroring, shouldn't we expect them to perform well here too?
Then again, they've been tweaking the cars since then.

Safety car onboard footage, cruising through Santa Monica:

The track feels ridiculously narrow by modern standards. Turn after turn, making overtaking a real challenge. The most interesting part? Those banked corners. Especially that final one, which lets you pin it full throttle straight into the first turn, right past the start-finish line and the DRS zone.

Seven right-handers per lap. Some are quite fast. Expecting a high DF setup here... which likely means trouble for the front left tire.

My dear colleague darkmarlin16, what a top-tier way to kick off this race thread.
darkmarlin16 said:They should have had them follow the SC for at least 20 laps.

Exactly.
Obviously, you wouldn't see a damn thing following the lead car. Every single driver—except maybe Max Verstappen—would have complained loudly over the team radio, and the race director would have rightfully ruled it too dangerous to drive. Sure, it’s "too dangerous," they’re "prioritizing safety," blah blah blah.

Instead, they were sent out for those two measly laps just to save face for the people who paid for tickets and TV rights.
Absolute rock bottom.
swiftmaker12 said:I just feel for those fans who shelled out for expensive tickets. It seems like the FIA only pulled this move to technically cancel the race so they wouldn't have to issue any refunds.

Domenico explained it quite simply.

What we saw on Sunday was really the only way to handle it if you want to avoid extra headaches—mostly financial ones—for the FIA, the organizers, and the teams.
swiftmaker12 said:I’m thinking about the fans who shelled out for those expensive tickets. It feels like the FIA just went through the motions to make sure the race was technically "held" on paper, all just to avoid handing back anyone's money.

Domenico, this argument is as hollow as a Mexico ghost town.
swiftmaker12 said:Don't let it get to you too much... Daytona Beach is up next weekend.

Look, I’m usually the first one out there regardless of the weather, and if someone can't handle it, they can just pull over to the side. But...

This track is 44 laps long. That means at least half the race—literally—would be spent driving under the SC. To me, that alone is enough reason to change my mind.

And besides, if Lando Norris had spun out during the race like he did yesterday, we’d be looking at a tragic replay of what happened to Anthoine Hubert. He’d fly off at Mount Rushmore, bounce back onto the track, and get hit by someone else.
Or take what happened yesterday in the W series, where drivers were just slamming into one another.
