Breast reconstruction surgery

So, here is my situation,
About two years ago, my mother underwent surgery for breast cancer, which unfortunately required a mastectomy. She is still in her middle years and really wants to feel like herself again, so she has been looking into different reconstruction options.
From what we have gathered so far, this seems like a much more intricate journey than just getting implants. Several doctors have suggested that using a flap from her own tissue might be the most effective route for reconstruction. That being said, I would truly value hearing from anyone who has gone through this personally or has firsthand experience with the process. My main concerns are regarding the level of pain involved, how noticeable the scarring might be, and if there are any specific surgeons you would highly recommend!
