I'm somewhat on board. You need a lot of elements to align—atmosphere being the biggest one—for something to actually earn the neo-noir label. It can't just be about some tense affair. If that were the case, you could throw Max Payne, John Wick, and half of all comic book movies into that same category.

Folks, yesterday's premiere of The Avengers was hands down the best cinema experience I've ever had. The crowd was massive. It felt like every fifth person was wearing a themed shirt (mostly Team Captain America 😁), and every third person was carrying a promotional menu. Honestly, it felt like being at a miniature Comic-Con... haha. And once the movie actually started? Incredible. People were cheering, laughing, and I think even a few people were tearing up. I'm a total movie junkie. I hit the theaters so often that my experiences are almost always positive—maybe a 10% failure rate at most.

True, there are those rare moments that make you forgive all the bad movie experiences.

Take the premiere of Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring. The theater was overflowing, including some high-profile VIPs and a whole crowd of soldiers... just everyone glued to Gandalf & co.🙂...unforgettable. I remember catching my breath in the lobby afterward, grabbing a drink, and then heading straight to line up for Tim Burton's King Kong...😁

Though I'm a little worried I might lose my cool and turn into a villain myself, trying to take over the theater.

It’s useless trying to pick an unvisited theater. One day, I found myself in a half-empty—well, let's be honest, nearly empty—theater, losing my mind because of some idiot (I couldn't quite decide if she was just an idiot or something worse) who would practically giggle at every single new jump scare in a horror movie. And this wasn't even a serious horror film; I'm jumping out of my seat from the fright, while this woman is just sitting there smirking.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it's some kind of glitch where horror creatures actually make her laugh. As for people on their phones, I don't even have the energy to get started.

Then there was this other incident at an outdoor screening. A woman sat next to me, looking like the quintessential corporate executive—perfect makeup, polished outfit—and every time the screen hinted at anything remotely suggestive between two characters, she'd let out a soft, "Ooh!" in a tone straight out of a vintage adult film. 🤣

I spent an entire decade avoiding the movies because of morons and savages like these two. I finally gave it another shot a few years ago, and now I'm seriously considering running away again.

Thanks for reminding me about this masterpiece... if it keeps raining like this today, I might actually put it on 🎉

Where on earth did you guys get Clint and Schwarzenegger from? Everyone loved the other guy back when he’d roll straight from the gym to the set; after Conan the Barbarian, he was basically a god. We're talking about guys who actually faced the threat of getting pelted with sticks by angry crowds—they were totally hated by the media and the public alike (think McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Robert Pattinson and his girlfriend, or Robert Downey Jr.).

btw I still can't wrap my head around Robert Downey Jr. today.

If you're looking for another lovely adaptation based on Henry James—even if this one also flopped The Golden Bowl—here's a suggestion.

IMDb doesn't just cook up that score based on how many times we random viewers click a button. They factor in other metrics, like what the critics are saying, and then they run everything through... something 🤔... I read about it in a dedicated thread once, but I didn't quite wrap my head around the specifics. Anyway, the rating is basically a blend of audience input, critic reviews, and whatever else the IMDb staff decides to throw in.

Critics over the last few decades have buried so many gems that you could basically call them the new Red Guards... IMDb ratings aren't even reliable because the admins setting the final scores still lean on critic reviews, which leads to some truly absurd situations.

The other day I was looking at the numbers and couldn't believe that Red Heat, easily one of the best and most fun movies from the 80s, is sitting at a 6.0. 🙂

Same goes for the first two Predator (1987) films.
