Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Tim Burton’s 1999 flick Sleepy Hollow is basically a reimagining of that old Washington Irving legend from back in 1820. It stars Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, with a solid supporting cast including Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper van Dien, and Jeffrey Jones. The whole thing follows Ichabod Crane (Depp), an investigator sent out from New York to look into a string of murders happening in the Sleepy Hollow valley. Fun fact: this was actually the first movie ever put out by Mandalay Pictures.

I can't stand Tim Burton as a director, yet I absolutely adore this movie.

It’s pretty much the only film of his I actually enjoy—though I do respect Batman 1989, even if I feel he was being held back from his full vision by the studio (thank God for that)—and I have such a soft spot for Sleepy Hollow specifically because of that "Gothic style" I usually despise. Haha, I know—it sounds like a total paradox, but that’s just how it is; for some reason, his particular aesthetic fits this film perfectly.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd give Sleepy Hollow a massive score: 8.5/10.

Personally, I’ve always had a huge soft spot for Burton’s earlier stuff, and I truly believe Sleepy Hollow stands as the absolute pinnacle of his career. It feels like everything he produced after that just started heading on a bit of a downward slide.

absolute masterpiece ☕

It’s been ages since I actually sat down to watch that movie. All I can really conjure up from the memory is a black horse and those spikes served with absinthe. Clearly, it didn't leave much of an impression on me.

I absolutely loved this movie! There’s just something about that specific Burton-esque fairy tale vibe he brings to so many of his films, even when things get dark. For me, Edward Scissorhands is the ultimate example of that style. When you get Depp and Burton working together in their element, you know you're in for a great film and a hell of a good time.

"San Diego" is a movie that seemingly checks all the boxes for what makes a film great, yet for some reason, it just didn't land for me.
Even the title sounds enticing—it captures that fairy-tale vibe I usually love. But something is missing. I can't quite put my finger on it.

In my opinion, the excessive brutality is a huge drawback. I've always been turned off by scenes involving bloodletting, axes, or swords, and the explicit violence here was hard to stomach. It’s enough to completely ruin what could have been a solid film.
I can't pinpoint exactly what went wrong, but
it feels like the heavy focus on special effects ended up swallowing the story whole. Or maybe the plot just wasn't engaging enough on its own. I liked the atmosphere, but the story failed me.

Insane movie. Watched it maybe 3 or 4 times already. Depp absolutely killed it 🙏

Total sleeper hit, way too

Man, I absolutely loved this movie. Last time I caught it, I was still watching it on VHS, which feels like forever ago. Honestly, I might just have to dive back into it again soon.
