I just picked up a new laptop running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
It’s constantly nagging me about updates, and frankly, the sheer volume of them feels a bit suspicious. Is it normal for there to be this many?
For instance, I'm seeing things like: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems, Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems, Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package, and the NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Security Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems. It just keeps coming—one service pack after another.

To make matters worse, the machine seems to have slowed down a notch since I installed SP1... which is a bit irritating.

I'd appreciate some advice. Should I just bite the bullet and install everything they offer, stick strictly to the service packs when they arrive, or just ignore the whole mess entirely?
How much of this stuff is actually necessary?

Just so we’re clear, .NET Framework 3.5.1 is essentially a built-in Windows 7 feature. You can toggle it on or off whenever you feel like it, depending on what your system actually needs to run.

Open up your Control Panel and head over to the search bar. Just type in the letter "f." You should see "Programs and Features" and "Turn Windows features on or off" pop up right at the top. Click on that, find ".NET Framework 3.5.1," and toggle it on. Hit OK, and let it do its thing. Once it finishes installing, you’ll likely have to deal with a restart. Typical.

If you feel like it, you can also go ahead and install .NET Framework 4 beta 2.I can't find the link you're referring to. Could you please post it again?)

I’m looking to get .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed because a few of my programs are throwing errors and demanding it during setup. What’s the deal with getting this running on Windows 7?
Does Windows 7 come with this pre-installed, or am I going to have to go through the hassle of a manual installation?
I’ve been scouring the web, but all I can find are buggy beta versions that look like a headache waiting to happen. 😕

I’ve been thinking about setting up a little photo slideshow on my desktop. I don't want it taking over the whole screen, though—just something tucked away in a corner, maybe occupying about a quarter of the space at most...
Does Windows 7 happen to have some kind of gadget for this sort of thing?

I suppose I'll just have to dig a little deeper into the Windows 7 settings and see what I can find... 🤔

If I install Windows 7 and use various "activators" to get it running, is there still a chance for updates and security patches to work properly?
Is there any real risk of Microsoft deciding to "block" my access to Windows 7 entirely?

In your opinion, what’s the best video player out there—specifically one that plays nice with Windows Vista, handles subtitles without a headache, and ideally won't cost me a dime?

Also, does anyone know how to configure a media player so it actually loads the subtitles automatically?

On a side note, what’s the verdict on the full Nero Burning ROM suite? Any particular gripes or praises?
