and I plan on sticking with Windows XP for a long, long time.

And honestly, XP works just fine; I wasn't suggesting otherwise, aside from my previous point😁....👍👍

Don't even get me started on that "don't send" nonsense; it’s completely useless now. Honestly, I spent way too much time dealing with endless errors and sheer stupidity back when I was running Windows XP, though—and there is always a massive "but" in these discussions—XP remains the gold standard for both low-end rigs and beefy workstations alike. It just works. You give it a tiny bit of breathing room and it gives you everything in return, which is more than I can say for most modern OSs, unless you count Linux.
I’m sticking with Vista Ultimate for the time being because, quite frankly, it’s the only thing actually running smoothly on my machine, whereas everything else seems to hit a brick wall when I try to push past 4GB of RAM.😁Everything runs significantly faster than it did back when we were stuck using Windows XP; I’ve observed this firsthand through several practical tests. For instance, I have a D-Link modem that connects via a LAN connection to an old XP machine, and once the system actually boots up, I’m forced to sit there for three to four minutes just waiting for the OS to finally "find" the hardware. Compare that to my current setup, where the connection is established in maybe five to ten seconds at most, and it really highlights how much more efficient modern systems have become.

steelsailor3 said:Unfortunately, you hit a hard ceiling at 510MHz; anything beyond that results in Windows crashing within two minutes or just failing to boot entirely, 🙂which is frustrating enough,
but regarding the motherboard itself, I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. 👍

🙂🙂 I would go as far as to say that is a solid—no, actually, an excellent—result.

Why on earth did he go ahead and delete that post???

Edward Peterson70 said:Skip the Big Typ VX version entirely; just go with the standard one because it actually sits properly on the processor, and if you're truly obsessed with having a manual potentiometer, you'd be better off picking up a Zalman fan mate instead.

Well, if I recall correctly, he likely already has those components sitting right there at his house... unless I'm mistaken.😁😁😉

@wiredmarlin5/">@@wiredmarlin5, just show us those benchmarks once you finally get your hands on the motherboard and the RAM 🙏😁

swiftcobra65 said:fine, I’ll defer to you regarding the motherboard, since my knowledge of the LGA 775 platform isn't exactly exhaustive...
as for the processor, I’ve decided on the Intel Core 2 Duo because I don't plan on replacing this rig for at least three years; once that time rolls around, it will be much easier to just grab a decent cooler and overclock it to 3.5 GHz, seeing as 3.0 GHz feels plenty sufficient right now, but in four years... well, I can't say for certain...

regarding that Kingston meme, I'm only picking it up because wiredmarlin5 recommended it, and from what I can gather, he seems to be some kind of authority figure among you lot... 😁

I won't need more than a 250GB hard drive, maybe 320GB if I'm feeling generous, because I'm currently sitting with a 120GB drive and about 30% of it is empty, and everything I actually care about is already on the machine...

The monitor is still a toss-up; I'm looking at either the Dell 2032BW or perhaps an LG 206WTQ. Samsung might offer better build quality, but LG tends to have the edge when it comes to actual performance—specifically the viewing angles and contrast ratio.

So, I suppose this should finally be the end of it... which is exactly what I'm hoping for, because quite frankly, I am exhausted from overthinking this entire process... 😁
thanks, everyone!

the Pro series and the motherboards are solid, and as for that comment toward wiredmarlin5... he's a total newbie who only looks at PCPartPicker😂 😂just kidding, wiredmarlin5, don't take it personally🙏

swiftcobra65 said:Well, if I were following that logic, I’d probably just grab a P35-DS3L motherboard because it should hold up fine. I'd aim for about 4.0 GHz to start with—honestly, in this day and age, I highly doubt I'd even need more than that. Would a stock cooler actually survive that kind of heat? If it doesn't, then I'd just pick up a BigTyp 120 VX, and I'm certain that would do the trick.

But what do YOU think that processor actually is??? Seriously... it's one of those things where you suddenly think, "Hey, maybe I'll try pushing my 6000+ to 4.3 GHz," based on some random thing you read online, provided you have a water-cooling setup... but obviously, hitting 4GHz isn't going to happen with a stock cooler, and frankly, that depends entirely on the rest of your hardware too.😂😂😂

Edit: even Daniel Nguyen3 told you (and he knows what he's talking about from actual experience) exactly where the limit of reality lies.

Daniel Nguyen3 said:Actually, I’m just pulling your leg—what are you even talking about? 5GHz? You’d need a constant stream of liquid nitrogen for that, because there is absolutely no way you're hitting those speeds on this setup.

The only real distinction between the Intel Core 2 Duo and the Intel Core 2 Duo is the multiplier, specifically moving from x8 to x9.

🙂🙂 Just look at this, right here: http://xtreview.com/images/wolfdale%...400%20oc01.png

Jesse Alvarez32 said:Windows Vista is absolute garbage compared to other versions of Windows. Honestly, the only redeeming qualities are the aesthetics and those little 3D window effects.

😂😂 I can't imagine hearing anything more foolish than that, because Windows Vista is actually a perfectly solid operating system; you just have to be patient while they roll out the necessary patches. As @core pointed out, its security is superior to Windows XP, meaning there is a significantly lower probability of catching a virus—for instance, when I'm browsing through shady warez sites on XP, which are notoriously riddled with malware, I run into errors and nonsense immediately, whereas Vista handles it smoothly as if nothing happened, and personally, I use the exact same antivirus software.

Does anyone happen to have a direct link or perhaps some kind of comprehensive tutorial regarding PC case modding? I would certainly appreciate the assistance.

If you actually bother to look at the bottom of that page, you'll see the maximum operating temperature listed right there, so just look for yourself.

What I'm getting at is that if we're looking at 63°C, and we're sitting at 55°C right now, there is still plenty of headroom left before we hit any real issues, especially since this thing is performing on par with a 6400+ clocked at 3.2GHz.

darkowl72 said:I couldn't find it...

Alright, so I’ve got HW running, and when I hit 100% load, the CPU is sitting at core 0 at 56°C
and core 1 at 57°C. Is there any point in trying to push it further, or should I just leave it be since I'm running a basic stock cooler...

darkowl72 said:Look, if you can manage to keep those temperatures sitting comfortably under 65 degrees after running Orthus for several hours, or if Prime95 isn't pushing past that 65 mark, I would honestly just leave things exactly as they are... it's highly improbable that you'll ever actually stress that processor quite as intensely during your everyday workload or while gaming as those specific stress tests do... but that’s just how I see it... besides, if my memory serves me right, the TDP for the E4500 sits somewhere around 65 or 70 Watts... you should probably double-check the official Intel website to be certain...

Does anyone know if there is a similar kind of program available for AMD chips?☕
