this one?
What am I even supposed to do with this piece of junk???
Should I just buy it and light it on fire???
1. No 400 MHz RAMDAC!!!
2. No DVI port!!!
I’ve got like 8 of these things lying around my house—just with less RAM. They're totally useless to me...
I just picked up this rig less than a month ago—brand new, at least to me.
So far I've got a 750MHz chip, 128MB of RAM, and a 32GB graphics card.
So the GeForce 6600 GT isn't any good? I hate buying used gear—it's always a gamble.
What about Nvidia?
So, I'm looking to pick up a new 22" monitor.
My current card is a P117 with 64MB and a 350 RAMDAC, but for a 22" widescreen at 1680×1050, I need a 400 RAMDAC—so what's the move here?
Interface: AGP 8×
PSU: 400W Maxpower P4/K7
Motherboard: ASRock K7-upgrade-600
RAM: 256MB 333Mhz—planning to bump this to 1GB
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1.47Ghz
GPU: P117—just threw it in so the thing actually boots
OS: Ubuntu
I'm not a gamer or anything, I don't play games; I just need the monitor for movies and daily stuff (MSN, Mozilla ...).
THANKS; hoping for a quick reply!!!
Ideally, I want a passive heatsink because the noise drives me crazy—right now the PSU is the loudest thing in my rig—the CPU fan is 17dB, and the two case fans are 15dB. Since they don't really make them with passive coolers, I just want whatever produces the least amount of noise possible. It would also be cool if the GPU was smaller since I have 7 LEDs in my case so it won't show through, but whatever...
Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT?
is the fan loud? does it have any jumpers on it... does the fan need extra power?
Honestly, Windows 7 just feels too heavy... Everything’s more complicated now—no easy paste, no quick right-click properties on the desktop to swap my wallpaper—it’s all a mess. The Start menu is as clunky as it was on Windows Vista, and I'm really not feeling it... it's just confusing as hell.
I might just roll back to Windows 7, but only if someone's actually smart enough to find me drivers for this:
Dell XPS
installed Windows 7, looked at it, and honestly? Seems way more demanding than Windows Vista—and I could never wrap my head around the Vista interface to begin with, so Windows 7 feels even clunkier. I couldn't even change the damn background, so I nuked it because the whole thing is garbage:
- the taskbar uses icons instead of icons plus text
- everything is just grey now instead of that blue/grey/black vibe
- the look alone reminds me of GNOME Linux
- couldn't find any drivers—tried using the NVIDIA GeForce drivers from Windows Vista, but couldn't even select my resolution (1280×800)
- tried the driver CD meant for Windows XP, but as soon as I popped it in, a pop-up tells me it's only for Windows ME, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, and won't run no matter what I do
- couldn't even get online to download drivers (AC 97, the NVIDIA GeForce ones, WLAN, LAN, whatever)—it wouldn't even recognize my WLAN card
and yeah—that’s basically it. Nothing kept me on this OS. That Start menu, where the programs aren't listed like they were in Windows XP? Total GNOME Linux vibes
one last thing—during installation, I couldn't even format the partition; it forced me to fill it up completely (leaving like 2-ish GB free, though I figured it would just format it)
The only good parts: faster boot times and an easier install (which, again, feels like Linux since they basically invented that style first), but I just can't deal with something this complicated. Maybe I'll try reinstalling down the road, but only if I find the drivers first.
So, I went back to the good old Windows XP Home Edition.
That's that. It's just stupid that half the software and zero drivers work, when everything used to just work on Windows XP.
Windows XP is staying on my laptop as long as it's still kicking—I mean, what's wrong with Windows XP? I paid for this stuff a year and a half ago and now I feel like I wasted my money on some "old piece of junk."
It feels pretty stupid how Windows just forces IE and Messenger on you. Honestly—they should at least give you the option during installation.
Nobody's gonna pry me off this Windows XP setup until Microsoft drops the price on Vista or Windows 7—I already blew $267 on Windows XP Home.
