Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
crimsonhawk3 said:Hey there! I finally finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate today, and everything went smoothly, except for one thing. Now when I open My Computer, I only see one hard drive (C:), whereas back on Windows XP, I had two drives (C: and D:). Right now, I'm stuck using just a single 72 GB partition, but before, I was able to use about 120 GB total between both drives. Is there any way I can get that second partition back and start using the full 120 GB again? Any help would be appreciated... :|

Just right-click the Computer-click icon, go to Manage, which opens the Computer Management window, then select Disk Management. From there, you can activate the missing disk and format it as NTFS.

It will work just fine.

Once you’ve installed the game, just right-click the desktop icon, head into properties, and set it to run in XP compatibility mode. That usually fixes everything.

Run a full virus scan on your computer because if things don't look right after you revert back to the default theme, you might be dealing with a worm or a Trojan.

James Phillips65 said:how do I uninstall Windows 7

Just pop in a disc from another version of Windows when you start up the computer and tap the boot key—usually Del, Esc, or F8 depending on the machine.
Once you see the prompt on the screen asking you to press any key, the installation for the new Windows will kick off, and you can just wipe the partition where the old one lives or format it before moving forward with the install...

Jonathan Wood5 said:I've been using Windows for years and I have never experienced anything quite like my time with Windows 7. I picked up a new PC (Core2duo 2.93GHz, 4GB RAM, and a GTX 250) and did a standard installation of Windows XP. Everything works fine, but I just couldn't shake the urge to install Windows 7 as a dual boot. My first shock was how fast the installation went—it only took about 8 minutes, which honestly surprised me because I wasn't sure it would even work. Secondly, the installer didn't ask me for much during the process and ended up having all my drivers ready to go. Using it is just phenomenal. After two days of working in Windows 7, I wiped the whole machine and just kept Windows 7 installed, because I knew I wouldn't be going back to XP. Don't get me wrong, I was perfectly happy with XP, but this is just on another level. There are too many things to list about why it's great, but if you try working in it for a few days, I'm certain XP won't even cross your mind anymore.
Best regards,

The reason it didn't ask where to install is actually pretty simple: you clicked Upgrade here

instead of custom

I’m pretty sure your product key is already sitting in Microsoft's database just waiting for you to claim the upgrade.
Once you use it, that specific code gets wiped from the system and won't work for any future upgrade attempts.
Even if things go sideways, you can always fall back on our other option—just run the install and register it manually.😁
So there's really nothing to worry about.😁

A series of screenshots for build b.7700.winmain.100122-1900 just leaked on the Pattern site. While there aren't any obvious visual changes to point out, that jump from 7.600 (Windows 7 RTM) to 7.700 might actually suggest things are moving toward the Windows 8 alpha and beta stages. :think:

Pattern also released a list of builds compiled after the final Windows 7 RTM release, stretching all the way through January 2010.

* 7650.0.winmain.090917-1843
* 7651.0.winmain.090924-1802
* 7656.0.winmain.091015-0833
* 7658.0.winmain.091019-1850
* 7659.0.winmain.091020-1830
* 7660.0.winmain.091021-1736
* 7661.0.winmain.091022-1755
* 7662.0.winmain.091023-1645
* 7664.0.winmain.091027-1825
* 7691.0.winmain.100106-1825
* 7692.0.winmain.100107-1735
* 7693.0.winmain.100111-1820
* 7694.0.winmain.100113-1753
* 7695.0.winmain.100114-1855
* 7696.0.winmain.100115-1725

Looking at these specific builds, it doesn't look like we're looking at Service Pack 1 for Windows 7, especially since Pattern confirmed last week that development for that starts with b.7601.winmain_sp.
Based on some recent statements, we could be looking at a Windows 8 RTM as early as July 2011. 👍

Here is a screenshot of my C: drive.
Basically, Windows 7 (32-bit) takes up over 8GB, while those unidentified files account for another 5.8GB just to store the OS itself. You're going to need at least a 16GB drive, though I’d personally recommend aiming for 20GB to be safe.

This shot shows how much space Windows 7 plus all the essential daily software takes up (Office, BS Player, Adobe, dw4, PS4, Norton...)

How can I get my menu to look like the one in this photo—you know, those floating icons that just hover on the screen, whether they're at the top or bottom?
Is there some kind of gadget or a specific little app for this?
Thanks 👍

Jonathan Wood5 said:It isn't working. I noticed that when I use an external drive formatted in FAT32 to watch movies on my PlayStation 3, everything works fine—both the video files and the subtitles play perfectly. However, if I use a partition formatted in NTFS, the console won't recognize either the movies or the subtitles. Windows 7 sees the files just fine and plays them through Windows Media Player without any issues, but when I run aviaddxsubs, it can see the folders but shows absolutely nothing inside them, neither the .avi nor the .srt files. There aren't any specific settings within the program to address this, yet everything functions flawlessly back on Windows XP.
Any ideas?

Give this a shot.
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the underlying cause might be.
I do know that flash drives and external drives generally need to be in FAT32...

swiftstag19 said:Does anyone know why my microphone isn't working on a 64-bit system?

It's possible the drivers just aren't supported for that specific microphone, so you should probably check the manufacturer's website to see if they offer drivers specifically for a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Drivers from Windows Vista will work too, you just have to manually point them out to the system within the Device Manager.

Jonathan Wood5 said:This software isn't working for me on Windows 7. I'm using version 9.3, which is the latest one available online.
When I launch it and try to browse for an AVI file, nothing shows up—not the AVI files or the SRT files. It used to work perfectly fine, and I really need it to get things ready for my PlayStation 3.
The program is YouTube

Try right-clicking it and selecting run as administrator.

It’s entirely possible you're just dealing with a glitch or a bug within Windows itself, and a quick Windows Update might just patch it right up.

Control panel \ All Control panel Items\Windows Update

This is what I am referring to.

Go ahead and run that upgrade if you haven't already done it.

Paul Anderson7 said:I have a pretty straightforward question for everyone here. Is making the jump to Windows 7 actually worth it? Should I move away from my reliable Windows XP setup right now, or is it smarter to hold off for a bit longer? I'm mostly wondering if there are still those typical early-stage bugs and glitches that usually pop up with new releases.

You can definitely make the switch to Windows 7 without any hesitation; I've been running it daily for over six months now and haven't run into a single issue.
There aren't really any "growing pains" left to deal with, not since the beta phase ended, let alone now.
In my opinion, upgrading is highly recommended and honestly the best move to make at this point.

Paul Lopez49 said:Not much, I was just acting as both a user and an admin 🤷 Maybe I should have added the password to make it work; I'll set that up now and give it a shot. Thanks. 🙂

You need to be logged in as an admin and then delete the user account.

Paul Lopez49 said:So, how does it run in comp mode? 😁

I’ve hit another snag—whenever I try to download something, it won't let me save it where I want because it keeps saying I don't have administrator permission 🙄 I’m running the Pro version. When I originally installed everything, I didn't set a password because I didn't want to deal with it (and honestly, I might just forget it anyway). Is there a way to turn this off?

Control Panel\User Accounts

Your account name should be listed here, and right underneath it, it should say Administrator.
If there are any other user accounts on there that you didn't create yourself, feel free to delete them and switch your own account over to Admin status.

To set up a password: Control Panel\User Accounts\Create Your Password
That should do it. 😁

Paul Lopez49 said:I have a couple of questions 😁

Is there a way to make MSN sit down by the clock, like it used to in those older versions of Windows? I mean, when I hit the X, I want it to go to the system tray, but if I just minimize it, I want it on the taskbar.
Also, can I change the color when something happens within a specific window? Yellow is my default right now, but it’s too faint—I’d much rather have it turn red.

In Windows 7, they actually removed the ability to pin program icons to the end of the taskbar near the clock.
As for your second question, you can fix that by following this path:

Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Personalization \ window color and appearance, then just click on Advanced appearance settings...
That will open up a window where you can tweak exactly what you're looking for.
