Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Justin Davis75 said:this thread is 68 pages deep and already has 2,707 posts, and honestly, at 11:20 PM, I can barely keep my eyes open enough 🙂 if someone kind enough could just give me the short version. Does everything designed for Windows XP run on 7? I'm talking about anything from iTunes and VLC Media Player to modern games and older classics like StarCraft. Thanks. 🙂

Everything you mentioned runs perfectly on the 32-bit version—it actually flies—but you might hit some driver snags with certain devices on the 64-bit version, and a few specific games won't work there.
If a program isn't officially supported, it's usually pretty easy to go into the settings and set it to run in compatibility mode so it acts like it's on Windows XP, which works without any real trouble.

I went ahead and rolled back to version 2.44 after testing two other versions, including the latest beta, but I've run into a wall. Now there’s no video at all—just audio. I already installed the K-Lite Codec Pack, and even though VLC Media Player spent a few minutes installing its own codecs during setup, the problem persists. I'm starting to lose my patience here. 😲
Any help would be appreciated. 🙂

Just wipe your OS and do a clean install because there's no way you're hitting this many snags just by chance.

And my question is: I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista, so does it make sense for me to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 now, or should I try partitioning the drive or just leave things as they are? (I'm running 512 MB of RAM)

Just wipe everything and do a clean install of Windows 7 so your files don't get all messy and slow down your computer for no reason.
You're going to end up with a ton of files that aren't compatible with Windows 7 that won't just delete themselves.

Does anyone know how I can roll back to Windows XP? It’s not that I don't like Windows 7—it’s actually great—but my system just starts lagging whenever I try to produce music, so maybe my PC is just underpowered for it. Anyway, when I try using an XP installation disc, I'm having trouble because I'm not quite sure which version I have, and it won't let me install it, saying the current operating system doesn't support this action. So, when I restart and try to boot from the CD, nothing happens at all. When I try to click on the disc while the computer is running, it tells me it isn't supported. Can anyone help me out?😕

Just pop the CD in while Windows is still running and start the setup from there; you should be able to install Windows XP without any issues.

In terms of simplicity, Windows 7 really took the baton from XP, which is true. Everything is positioned exactly where you'd expect it to be, and more importantly, it doesn't hog your RAM or CPU at all. It also takes up very little hard drive space compared to Vista, which isn't much more than an extra 1GB over what XP requires.

There’s no point in hunting for a CD if you just keep all your drivers ready on your hard drive instead; that way, you can just burn them onto a DVD or a CD whenever you need, and then you can smoothly run Windows Vista on the bottom and Windows XP on top, leaving everyone happy and satisfied.

I don't want to wipe out Vista because I need Windows XP specifically for two programs that just won't run on Vista.
I want Vista to remain my primary operating system. Is there any way to install XP while Vista is currently running?
I'm looking for a standard installation; I don't want to deal with Virtual PC or VMware (so, no virtual machines here).

I'll set aside a partition of about 15 GB for XP since I won't be doing much on it anyway.

It's pretty straightforward—just create two partitions, keep Vista on one and XP on the other, and you're all set.
