Stories from D.C. in Movies ·
Eric Jackson68 said:So, apparently, the only theater in town showing "Stories from D.C."—this anthology featuring a bunch of talented young American writers—is the local indie cinema. It’s honestly a bit ridiculous that such a project is being restricted to just one single venue in the entire city.

I don't think there's any shame in that; honestly, just imagine if that theater didn't even exist, or if we hadn't all fought to keep it alive. Now *that* would be a disgrace—if that same space was just turned into a Walmart today.Europa is—alongside the local cinema (assuming they actually get around to renovating that one)—basically the last sanctuary for good movies in Washington, D.C. (and arguably one of the most beautiful theaters in all of Europe🙂).

briskhound2 said:😢 Oops. Totally missed adding that one. It’s been hovering in the back of my mind this whole time... Look, nothing against Spielberg or the movie itself, but neither of them—nor even Life is Beautiful—really hit me as hard as Sobibor did... but you've got a point there... it could definitely fit under a different category. Weirdly enough, you're actually the first person to bring it up so far.👍 It's pretty interesting because it doesn't really show up on those lists of POW movies either (I scrolled through quite a few before the poll) and none of them ever framed it in that context.

Yeah, you've got a point there—Life is Beautiful and Schindler's List aren't usually hanging out on P.O.W. lists, probably just because they always get shoved into their own little category called the list of Holocaust films. In other words, if you were already including Benigni's movie in the poll, you could have easily tossed in Spielberg's masterpiece too. But hey, no big deal, the poll is still great (sorry, I know I'm being a total nitpicker, but I just had to weigh in 🙂)

So, briskhound2, I was just sitting here watching something... 🤔 If we're already including Life is Beautiful, then why on earth isn't Schindler's List part of the conversation? 🤷

Michael Ortiz68 said:😁 The Great Illusion I haven't watched it yet, even though The Great Escape has been sitting on my hard drive for months. Two and a half hours feels like a massive commitment, and honestly, what am I going to do when I’m already such a lazy slob? 😬
Anyway, first item on my shopping list is... Escape from Sobibor Thanks, briskhound2. I’ve been digging into the actual facts surrounding this event, and I have to say, it's going to be on my watchlist starting tomorrow. 🙂

Edit: Does anyone know of any movies about an escape, or an attempted escape, from the Siberian gulags? The only one that comes to mind is this one: As far as the feet will carry you.Look, a frozen wasteland isn't exactly the ideal setting for an Escape, but I've read that people still managed to pull it off.

I caught something similar on ABC back in 2000:

There’s also a great documentary out there: Gulag (2000).

Well, it’s not quite the Gulag/Siberia vibe, but it’s a damn good Russian film regardless:

The King is back, kudos to briskhound2—another fantastic poll!

Michael Ortiz68 said:Yeah, this is my first time voting 😬

To be honest, Stalag 17 is the clear winner here. Though, I haven't seen it in ages, so I really ought to brush up on it. As for the others, I cast my votes for Life is Beautiful, Empire of the Sun, and The Deer Hunter. Mind you, I have to admit I haven't actually sat through most of them.

briskhound2, you should probably run these polls more often. You’ve got a knack for it. 👍

This time, my humble self is (almost) signing off on your post before even finishing it. So, I went with Stalag 17, Empire of the Sun, The Deer Hunter, and The Great Illusion.
Good grief, where on earth did you pop up from after that last post? 🙂

Amanda Lopez50 said:...but isn't this topic more suited for a different subforum? 😁

Not even close. That whole Ellen Page/Juno middle ground is such a heavy emotional experience in the movie 😁

A Bilbo Baggins? 🤷 Seriously? This poll is basically a targeted assassination attempt on Tolkien's entire legacy 🙂

Hey Harper Lee, when are we actually going to see polls for Teen Wolf, Legally Blonde, Revenge of the Nerds, Dumb and Dumber, Dirty Dancing, Jaws...

Please hurry up (can I at least start with Bilbo Baggins? 😍).
I can't believe I'm actually sitting here typing this out, but apparently, we need to have a serious talk about how much of a mess things have become lately.

It’s almost funny, in a deeply depressing sort of way, how quickly everything just falls apart.
Honestly, if you had told me a few years ago that we'd be dealing with this level of chaos, I probably would have laughed in your face. 😍😍😍
But here we are, just drifting along.
I guess some people find it exciting, though personally, I'm just exhausted by the whole ordeal. image
It really makes you wonder where it all went wrong.

Aaron White13 said:Sorry man, but you're losing the plot a little. Major props to you for knowing your film theory and being great at slapping Google images together, but just because > sent you to play escort for some guy who is clearly a hundred levels above all of us here, doesn't mean you should be spilling details about where your CLIENT got sick. It's just not cool.
Just dropping by to say that... nothing personal.☕

Honestly, you’re totally losing the plot with all this off-topic nonsense—which, by the way, is starting to get on my nerves too. And just to set the record straight, I wasn't the one who dragged poor Boll into a discussion about some Hollywood blockbuster being filmed in San Francisco. If you're that obsessed, why don't you just start your own thread and go ahead and worship him there? 100 digging aroundabove antifilmaša ☕

David Price5 said:Look at it this way: if a director makes about 40 films and you happen to catch just one for thirty minutes, and you hate it, should we assume you'll dislike every single thing they've ever made?

I haven't seen them either. However, I realized I was citing him as an example of a bad director without actually watching anything he made. I fell into the trap of following the hype surrounding the hatred for him. Whether that is justified in this specific instance is a different matter, but it becomes a bad habit nonetheless.

That's enough for me; life is too short to waste on his films.

The issue isn't avoiding his films, it's the "reflexive bashing" of them without even giving them a watch.

Come on, please, it’s not like we’re talking about Uwe Boll Haneke where he might actually stumble into a decent film once in a while. These aren't films; they're just pure, unadulterated garbage. Besides, the guy is incredibly arrogant, rude, narcissistic, and completely devoid of talent. A true gentleman like Jakov sedlar makes him look like a saint. Honestly, I'm just glad he teamed up with Grubišić; it's like heaven meeting hell. They really are the perfect match—a duo of absolute (anti)talents, obviously. ☕

end of offtopic.
David Price5 said:Regardless, it isn't fair to jump to conclusions based on just one movie, whether you're talking about a director or an actor..

I mean, I did say his career was impressive in its own way. Let's be real, Uwe Boll isn't just any director btw.

Long Live Uwe Boll (7014 total Signatures)

Vs.

Stop Dr. Uwe Boll (346876 total Signatures).

Personally, I'm good; life is far too short to spend it watching his stuff.
David Price5 said:It looks like a lot of you really can't stand Uwe Boll. I'm curious, how many of his movies has everyone here actually sat through?

Sadly, I've only seen Postal. So, yeah, that’s more than enough for me 🙄 (I was just checking, and apparently, after Max Schmeling, he knocked out two more films with a third in pre-production—the man really knows how to stay busy). Honestly, I can't help myself here... back then, I was working closely with Grubišić right around the time Boll first showed up at the studio in Washington, D.C. (June 2008). He even played the part of the gracious host; he was there overseeing the laying down of that massive red carpet right in front of the entrance to the management building; he was basically running around town like a complete lunatic... So, I'd say I'm sufficiently qualified to talk trash about him :klap:. For what it's worth, if anyone's interested, I think I might still have a paper Big Mac box lying around somewhere from when he threw up in it back in the day 😬
cosmicraven2 said:For those interested, here is the script review for that film.

I honestly can't decide which is worse. 🤣

As for Uwe, he might just make a comeback in our beautiful America; he's confirmed he'll be filming Bloodrayne 3 this spring, with Kristanna returning for the title role. 🤣

Thanks, cosmicraven2. 🙂I spend quite a bit of time on Scriptshadow, but somehow I missed this one (probably for the best, given it doesn't smell particularly good).

p.s. They apparently paid anywhere from $800K to $1.6 mil for this script. So, there you go—start writing. Let’s be real though, about ten people from this forum could probably write a better script than this, mark my words.
goldenhound32 said:I’m with you on that one.

And honestly, even if we assume News Corp actually collaborated with Hitler... how does that even touch the quality of their programming? 🤷

Whatever.

OT (those in the know will get where this is going):

Watch out for the swine flu. Since that nasty business already came up, I figure every single diagnosis of an H1N1 patient should probably include a little disclaimer: Brought to You by Al Gore. ☕
goldenhound32 said:It’s certainly significant that they’ll be filming in San Francisco. Now, if only one could hope for the film itself to actually be any good—though, considering this is a massive Hollywood spectacle, I won't hold my breath. We both know they won't 🙂

While I can't quite wrap my head around Rupert Murdoch, I do appreciate Fox's choice to set things in San Francisco, though I have to say I'm totally against these notorious, media-driven publicity stunts. We really need to stay grounded here: even Age of Aquarius was supposed to shoot around Washington, D.C., but they blew through over $6 million just in pre-production. Sadly, that project never even made it to the set—mostly because Harrison Ford gave them hell by demanding too much cash, causing Universal to scrap the whole thing in a heartbeat. So, honestly, nobody can promise us that Medieval will actually be shooting in San Francisco next year. We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
Just finished reading that. članak Looking at JL's website, I honestly can't wrap my head around the sheer persistence of these idiots—they seem hell-bent on turning other fools into even bigger fools. 🤷 especially Vlahušić:

Andrew Vlahušićthe mayor of San Francisco, found out So, does this mean the whole movie is set in the Middle Ages, with some 500 extras just hanging out in San Francisco to make it look authentic?

Look, I hate to be the one to say it, but the guy is a total disaster. found out... 🤣 And then there's that clueless, backward JL person reporting this all like we're still living in the Stone Age.

The movie already has a title, but for now, let's just say that's strictly classified.Since the casting hasn't even kicked off yet, I can't really give you any specifics on which big Hollywood names might show up in the credits. At its core, though, we're looking at a massive spectacle. We’re looking at a release date sometime early next year. he let us in on the secret Boris DmitrovićHe’s an executive producer on Formula Film and a member of the American Film Directors Guild.

Seriously, who on earth is Boris Dmitrović? 😕 This guy makes Nikša Sviličić look like a genius by comparison. Honestly, that’s just the caliber of talent we have working in the American film industry: some dude announces his movie is hitting theaters in early 2010, yet somehow production doesn't even kick off until March of that same year. I mean, really? I don't even know where to start with that one.

So, what we're actually looking at here is a movie—specifically, a historical epic. WE First wrote about Medieval Back in March It’s being pitched as some kind of Medieval version of The Dirty Dozen. Originally, McG was supposed to take the helm, but that’s just how things tend to go in Hollywood—the director's chair eventually gets snatched up by someone much cheaper and significantly worse, in this case, Rob Cohen.

image

The screenwriters are Mike Finch & Alex Litvak—which happens to be their very first script, by the way.

Remember that new xXx sequel, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage? Honestly, there’s a slim chance it might actually turn out to be decent. Even though we're dealing with one of Hollywood's Worst Directors, I can't help but wonder if things might go differently this time around. Rob CohenSo, it looks like McG has decided to ditch that xXx sequel to instead take on a project called Medieval that he'll be producing. WE First wrote about Medieval Back in March We first wrote about Medieval Back in March, back when the rumors were swirling that McG might take the helm. Cohen describes IT as The Magnificent Seven in The Middle Ages, though i Can assure you this will be The farthest fra John Sturges's work you will ever see. New Regency, which is footing the bill and handling distribution through Fox, snapped up the spec script for a cool seven-figure sum.

"Making the call on xXx was a real struggle," Cohen told Variety. VarietyI caught up with Vin Diesel over the weekend and told him straight up that I hoped they’d just hold off on this, though I made sure to mention that if they ended up finding a different director who actually fits the vibe for the sequel, I definitely wouldn't hold a grudge. Still, there was no way I could just sit back and let a situation like this slide. See, Cohen is the director responsible for such Cinematic catastrophes as The Fast and the Furious, xXx, Stealth, and The Mummy: Tomb of The dragon Emperor most recently. He apparently "studied anthropology and European history AT Harvard," which is apparently the main reason New Regency thinks he’s the right man for the job. Honestly, this guy really shouldn't be behind a camera at all, yet somehow, he just keeps landing these gigs.

If Vlahušić and the rest of these so-called "film industry professionals" keep poking the American public with such blatant nonsense, I’m honestly going to just dump the entire Finch & Litvak script right here in the Disgraced thread (it's been floating around the web for ages, by the way).

Kate Harris4 said:21 votes in just about 12 hours—which tells me people actually dig this poll. Look, let's cut the off-topic nonsense; if you've got nothing useful to say regarding the actual topic, don't just bark into the void.

What’s eating you, Christian Taylor3? 😕 You not feeling the poll? Then why are you even hanging out here? 🤷 If you think you can do better, go ahead and start a better one, but personally, I think this is great. 21 forum members voted, which means they're fine with it. If you like it, vote. If you don't, just move on. It's not that deep.

Whenever I see a thread I'm not interested in, I just skip it. I don't bother annoying the person who took the time to post it.

We aren't handing out Oscars or some prestigious award here—it's not like the world is going to stage a protest because Full Metal Jacket didn't make the cut. The whole point is just to have a good time. To include every single movie, like Full Metal Jacket, the poll would need to have 100 entries. I narrowed it down to 29 by picking a decent mix of war classics, dramas, and adventures. Obviously, you can't please everyone, but I really don't get the people who show up just to bark like dogs trying to sabotage the fun.

Oh, and I almost forgot—I should probably add battles from Mexico, and I totally missed checking out movies from Russia, Turkey, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, the US, Canada, Spain, and every other country on the planet. Since they probably all have great war movies too, maybe I'll just throw them all in and make the poll 500 movies long. Ha ha ha! 👍

Hey, Jack Harper, Nobody. Look, I’m not telling you to stop posting those polls of yours, and honestly, nobody here is actually coming after you for it. At the same time, I think I have every right to point out that this latest poll is just completely pointless, totally biased, and frankly, pretty stupid. And just to be clear, I’m talking about the poll itself, not you. 🙂 It really reminds me of all the recent nonsense from those PR agencies running interference during this whole presidential election race, especially with all the manipulation they pull behind the scenes. By the way, I actually went through some of your recent polls—not because I care that much, but mostly because the movie titles you listed were actually accurate. Don't get me wrong, though; this particular poll feels like pure manipulation, just an attempt to force your own specific taste onto everyone else. In fact, I even noticed yesterday that the very first post in this thread said something along the lines of: So, that’s the whole lineup of war movies we've got to work with. You'll just have to pick from what's on the list.... 😕 Then you went ahead and deleted it—or rephrased it, I guess. 🤷)

goldenhound32 said:I have to agree. This is a poorly constructed poll, and I refuse to participate.

No offense intended toward our esteemed poll-maker, but honestly, these should probably be flagged as spam and wiped from this PDF by default. On top of that, the very first post in this thread is pure misinformation: The poll includes every single movie related to war and combat. You could certainly make a case that they aren't... ☕

p.s. here's some cause and effect for you: since Anderson/monitor isn't doing anything to actually shut down the servers, the constant influx of these pointless threads just makes the whole situation worse. It's not like I have money to throw around—far from it—but I sometimes feel like asking Anderson: is this forum even for sale? 🤷 There would be plenty of takers, and at least the service might actually function properly again. ☕
