Well...

Serious plans for the year ahead (professional development edition)

1. Finally getting my driver's license
2. Signing up for a plant-based cooking class
3. Tackling some language studies—maybe Spanish or Italian—since my fluency needs a serious refresh

This headline in The New York Times is pathetic—truly bottom-of-the-barrel stuff—and honestly, I’m embarrassed they’d even run something like that on the front page... though, I have to admit, it is a bit funny. 😈

That whole "I don't care if my neighbor's cow dies" attitude is pretty infuriating...

But then again, if we’re being pedantic—Mexico never actually had any access to the ocean to begin with! 😈

thanks! thanks!

and btw—it’s spelled "change"
😉

The decision to switch up my avatar came from a bit of an overdose—if you can call it that—of the "Peanuts Treasury". It reminded me how much I love the characters Charles M. Schulz created and how (sadly) much I relate to Charlie Brown...

Since we are dealing with lists here, let's go in order:

10. Lucy on handling emotional issues:
Lucy: I'm worried about a little boy who sits in front of me at school…
He cries every day... This afternoon I tried to help him… I whacked him on the arm
Charlie: You Whacked him on the arm?!
Lucy: I think it helped… There's nothing like a little physical pain to take your mind off your emotional problems..

9. Charlie on solving problems (in general):
Linus: If you have some problem in your life, do you believe you should try to solve it right away or think about it for awhile?
Charlie: Oh, think about it… By all means… I believe you should think about it for awhile…
Linus: To give yourself time to do the right thing about the problem?
Charlie: No, to give it time to go away!

8. Sally on aging:
Sally: I worry about getting old…
Linus: That's nothing to worry about.
Sally: Of course, it's something to worry about…
Who wants to be nine?!

7. Charlie on romantic woes:
Charlie: I'd give anything to be able to talk with that little red-haired girl…
The amazing thing is that i know I'm The sort of person she'd like! I mean I'm not rough or crude or anything. I'm not the greatest person who ever lived, of course, but after all, who is? I'm just a nice sort of guy who…
Who never gets to meet little red-haired girls!

6. Snoopy on mortality:
Snoopy: Good grief! Trapped in a doghouse by an icicle!
I'll bet if i make the slightest move it'll crash down and kill me!
I’m simply not ready—far too young, far too kind—to be heading out just yet.
I’m simply far too much myself to die just yet!

5. Lucy on people:
Lucy: I’m curious about your take on why people even bother lying, Charlie Brown…
So, you’re actually suggesting our entire purpose on this planet is just to act as a catalyst for someone else's happiness? It's a lovely sentiment—really—but perhaps a bit much to ask of us all.
Charlie: Precisely that!
Lucy: What’s the point of all these others being listed here?

Schroeder on buying records:
Schroeder: Investing in vinyl always lifts my spirits—whenever I feel low, i buy som Records i was sol depressed today i bought Mendelssohn's violin concerto.
i buy som Records i was sol depressed today i bought Mendelssohn's violin concerto, Brahms' second piano concerto and Handel's ode for St. Cecilia's day…
Lucy: Seriously—how deep does this depression go?

3. Charlie on selfishness:
Patty: You’re acting just as selfish as the rest of them, Charlie Brown!
Spare me the sermonizing—the endless whining about how everyone’s out for themselves. Honestly, you aren't any different from the rest of us.
Charlie: I am, too!
I’m feeling a massive wave of guilt over this—honestly, it's weighing on me.

2. Lucy on life:
Charlie: When it feels like the world is moving at full speed while you’re just standing still—how do you catch up?
Lucy: Look at that horizon—see how massive the world really is? There’s enough space out there for everyone, isn't there? Tell me, have you ever laid eyes on any other worlds?
Charlie: No.
Lucy: For all we know, this is the only reality out there... isn't it?
Charlie: Right—precisely.
Lucy: You aren't telling me there aren't any worlds left for us to inhabit... right?
Charlie: Right—exactly.
Lucy: You were actually meant for this life... weren't you?
Charlie: Understood.
Lucy: FINE—STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE THEN!
Five cents, if you please...

...and of course, the absolute best—Charlie's take on life:
Linus: What’s your ultimate goal in life, Charlie Brown... Is it just to find some happiness?
Charlie: Oh boy...
I certainly wasn't expecting that—not by a long shot.
It’s a simple enough request—I just don't want to be unhappy.

You really have to love them.

The top 5 CDs checked out at the local library this week:

1. the definitive Simon & Garfunkel
because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of an emo at heart.

2. Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels - live 1973
there's just something about listening to weeping cowboys.

3. Iannis Xenakis - Chamber Music 1955-90
purely to satisfy my inner snob.

4. 4. Rolling Stones - Forty Licks
keeping up with what the kids are into these days.

5. 5. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
as much as I used to hate them, you can't deny this is a solid record. whatever.

Public libraries rule! 🙏

Since you both studied linguistics, you actually have some actual insight here... 🙄
Adam Moore said:organizer.

If we're talking about the same guy—and I suspect we are—I find it hard to believe he'd offer such a cliché excuse...

It’s more likely that your friend's books just didn't fit the "anarchist" vibe of the fair.
Adam Moore said:Say someone comes along with music that absolutely destroys you—in the best way—but they openly push Nazi ideology, violence against women, or something equally vile. Would you still listen? And how did you process that when you were just a teenager?

I wouldn't. And my stance hasn't changed since I was a kid. ☕

Adam Moore said:A friend of mine tried to set up a booth at an anarchist book fair recently, but the punks blocked him because he "doesn't fit the vibe." 🙏

Err... who exactly was he asking? One of the organizers, or just some random punk passing by? 🤔
