Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
crimsonstag84 said:It’s not a 2GB card, it's a GTX 550 Ti 😬 That one's fine too, like we discussed before... just maybe see if you can talk them down on the price a little bit.

EDIT: Or, you could try mixing things up like this—pairing a modern platform with some used parts:

I'm mostly looking at some older games...

The one with the E8400 actually runs fine without a dedicated graphics card, or so I heard when I called to check.

Do you think it’s worth grabbing that other setup you mentioned?? (That Athlon ii X2 2900, 4Gb RAM, 2Gb GPU, 320Gb hard drive)

That build with the E8400 seems decent enough, though they didn't mention what kind of GPU is tucked away inside.

It doesn't strictly have to be a gaming rig, honestly; most of the time it'll just be for browsing the web and general stuff, maybe throwing a light game on here and there...

Yeah, having the option to meet up in Indianapolis or the surrounding areas is definitely a huge plus 😁

Oh, I didn't realize you were an expert builder! I was just browsing their "pre-built" section on the website based on price and totally missed that option, which is why I was asking...

Thanks 😁

I'm going to get some cash together first and then see what happens!

It isn't exactly some high-end hardcore gaming rig, but honestly, you can still have a blast on it. If you feel like it later on once you've saved up some extra cash, you could just pop in a dedicated graphics card and boom—you've got yourself a real powerhouse. A legit gaming machine. 🙂

Could you drop a link?
I was actually hunting for it earlier but couldn't seem to track it down, so I might have just missed it entirely 😁

GPU options: maybe an HD 5770/HD 6770 for about $133 or a GTX 460/HD 6850 if you can swing $150.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if it's worth the investment...

Upgrading isn't really the move here, we're just going to grab a brand new 😁
Since everyone is already hanging out here, does anyone know if there's anything decent on Craigslist (ideally something local to the Midwest area) for under $833??

Since I’m really not an expert on this stuff and don't quite get how all these parts talk to each other, I was wondering if it actually makes sense to drop some cash on a better CPU (assuming there's even anything worth getting for an AM2 socket) and which ones would play nice with what I've already got, plus what kind of damage we're talking about for the price?
And also, is it possible to pair this up with a more powerful graphics card, and if so, which one should I be looking at?
😁

Adam Moore3 said:The thing is, we're looking at a totally dead platform here. If anyone actually picks this up, it'll probably just be for a few bucks to run some basic Office stuff, stream a movie, or browse the web—maybe even some really old games for a kid or something like that. That new HDD is going to cost you $117, and honestly, you might only get $200 for it if you're lucky. You definitely overpaid for the RAM since it's just DDR2; it's super old, out of production, and nobody really uses it anymore. Realistically, those parts are worth maybe $200 minus $83. The rest of the build? It’s basically peanuts, unfortunately. If you were to sell everything off piece by piece, you might scrape together maybe $700, but selling it as a whole bundle is a tough sell because it's just too outdated, so I seriously doubt anyone would cough up more than $600 for the whole kit, man.

And yeah, you're right, time has definitely passed it by.
Thanks for the info! 😁

Adam Moore3 said:Man, that platform is seriously ancient—it's basically a fossil at this point—and honestly, I’m shocked that power supply hasn't given up the ghost yet. If someone actually $200 offers that to you, grab it and consider yourself lucky.

The PC is running like a total beast now
since I finally got those new drivers installed for whatever purpose they served.

I've only had this HDD for about 3 months and it cost me around $133, though I really should have just grabbed a new one two months ago when I paid $117

Hey there!
So, I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea of what I might get for a PC with these specific parts:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000
Motherboard: Gigabyte M61SME-S2L
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3600 series
RAM: DDR2 4Gb 800Mhz (1 slot), Kingston
Power Supply: MS MAV-300W-P4
HDD: Toshiba dt01aca050 scsi (500 Gb)

Thanks a bunch! 😁
