Running Windows XP on a SATA hard drive in Software ·

If you're dealing with Linux-based operating systems that just won't recognize your SATA drive during setup, you might want to head into your BIOS settings and try toggling the "Compatibility" mode for the SATA controller. It can be a bit of a headache when they don't talk to each other right away.

I’d bet my bottom dollar that Windows XP would get just as confused by that setting.

Windows XP is definitely up and running in this specific scenario... I actually got it installed just the other night. Usually, if you look on the HP website for an NX7300 model, the drivers are nowhere to be found. But, funny enough, if you grab the ones meant for the NX7400, everything works perfectly.

I couldn't find a single thing about that online, so I pretty much ruled it out as an option. But hey, I did get most of this sorted—ended up grabbing that WD drive you mentioned earlier, and honestly, it’s working great so far. It comes with a two-year warranty, so whatever happens, happens, right?

Thanks, Benjamin King2 👍

It's not a bad drive per se... but when you realize a random enclosure from $67 paired with a standard internal drive gives you basically the same speed—and at least a year more of warranty coverage—then suddenly things look a little different...

I've got this new HP nx7300 laptop with a SATA hard drive. But when I try to kick off the installation from an original Windows XP CD, it keeps bugging out, asking me to load the hard drive drivers from a Floppy. The thing is, I don't own a Floppy, and I don't have a USB Floppy drive either. I reached out to HP customer support, and they sent over some instructions on how to burn everything without needing a Floppy, along with links for the drivers and a program called NLite...
So now I've got all the drivers—hard drive, video, audio, the whole nine yards—plus NLite, but the actual process still feels like a total mystery to me. If anyone here actually knows the exact steps to get this running on a SATA hard drive, could you please walk me through it? If there's already a thread about this somewhere, just drop the link.

Basically, I'm just lost on the order of operations—do I need to put the drivers on the hard drive first, then run NLite, or how does this whole thing actually work?

If you jump into the BIOS and switch the SATA setting from "Native" to... I can't remember the exact option, maybe "Disabled" or something similar... then everything should run normally after that. You won't even need the driver.
