Do you guys have a go-to heat survival kit? in The World Around Us ·
Every summer it feels like the thermometer is just trying to kill us. I’ve started keeping a cooler of ice water in my trunk just in case, but I'm wondering if there are better ways to handle it when the temperature spikes. What’s your best tip for staying cool when it gets unbearable?
I was looking at my calendar this morning and realized we are entering that specific time of year again—that weird, liminal space where everything feels like it’s about to happen, but nothing actually has. It’s that period where the preseason energy starts to ramp up, the schedules are being released, and everyone starts acting like this is the year everything finally clicks into place.

I don't know about you guys, but I find this time of year a bit exhausting. There is this inevitable surge of "new era" energy that hits every single fan base around this time. It’s like a collective fever dream. We see the training schedules, we see the preseason matchups, and suddenly, the cynicism that we spent all winter cultivating just evaporates. We start talking about "potential," "momentum," and "the foundation being laid." It’s a beautiful, dangerous cycle.

I remember back in my early twenties, I was a die-hard follower of a team that had been bottom-tier for a decade. Every single summer, I would buy the new gear, clear my schedule for the preseason games, and convince myself that the roster overhaul was actually going to translate to wins. I’d spend hours reading about the tactical shifts and the new coaching philosophies. And every single year, the inevitable happened: the season would start, the reality of the standings would set in, and I’d be left staring at a screen wondering why I let myself get so worked up over a bunch of practice sessions and exhibition games.

There’s a psychological component to this that I think we don't talk about enough in sports circles. It’s almost a form of coping mechanism. We need that preseason window to believe in the possibility of greatness because the reality of the actual season is too punishing. If we didn't have this period of speculative optimism, the grind of the regular season would be unbearable. We live for the "what if." What if this young talent actually matures? What if the scheme finally works? What if the luck turns?

But then there’s the darker side of it: the burnout. When you invest that much emotional capital into a schedule of practices and exhibition matches, you’re setting yourself up for a massive crash if the actual product on the field doesn't match the preseason hype. I’ve seen friendships dissolve over preseason debates, and I’ve seen people go completely silent on social media for months because the "optimism trap" bit them too hard.

I’m trying to learn how to approach this season differently. I want to enjoy the anticipation, but I’m trying to keep one foot firmly planted in reality. I want to appreciate the grind of the summer training, the physical toll it takes on the athletes, and the sheer organizational effort of getting a camp ready, without feeling like I need to place my entire emotional well-being on the outcome of a scrimmage.

Do you guys find it easy to stay grounded during this time of year, or do you find yourself getting swept up in the hype like I do? How do you balance the excitement of a fresh start with the skepticism that comes from years of watching the same patterns repeat?

So, what kind of antivirus are you guys running these days, and more importantly, is it actually doing its job or just sitting there being useless?

Honestly, my money is on the mail server being totally dead... Ever since AT&T swallowed up those old legacy providers back in the day, they've been trimming all the fat, so they probably just pulled the plug on those old corporate addresses
Bottom line, though? Just give the company providing your email service a call and ask them if their systems are actually still breathing

You should probably jump into your computer's BIOS and start poking around the menus; there’s usually an option tucked away in there somewhere to disable that specific processor behavior...

1. Go ahead and reset your BIOS back to the default settings just to see if that clears things up.
2. Pop those RAM sticks out and give the connectors a quick wipe down with some rubbing alcohol and a small cloth.
3. See if you can borrow a stick of memory from a buddy and run a test with theirs instead.
4. If that does the trick, start swapping your own sticks in one by one until you figure out which specific one is acting up.

I flashed the latest BIOS, so now it actually boots right into Windows :P
Tried swapping out the VGA cable, but I'm stuck because I don't have anything else to plug into the DVI port—I could try running an HDMI to my TV, but I don't even own an HDMI cable at the moment. :/
Everything is still acting up though. 😢
Look, just ask a buddy or a neighbor... surely someone's got an HDMI cable lying around somewhere. Just head down to a local Best Buy near $13 and grab the cheapest HDMI cable they've got.
Hey,
it sounds to me like your monitor and graphics card just aren't talking to each other properly right now.
Your first move should be swapping out that cable connecting the monitor to the GPU... try an HDMI or DVI instead of that old-school VGA setup.
If that doesn't cut it and you've got a TV lying around, plug the PC into that to finish up your Windows installation, grab the latest graphics drivers, and then switch back to the monitor once everything is updated. If there's no TV in sight, maybe see if a neighbor or a buddy will let you borrow a newer monitor just to get through that process...
The absolute last resort, if you're still staring at a blank screen, is to hunt down the latest BIOS update for your motherboard—but honestly, be careful with that one, it's a bit of a gamble.

Good luck 🙂

Honestly, whether it's Google or OneDrive, they’re all pretty solid options if that's what you need.
The best part is you don't have to sweat the technical stuff... they handle all the backup heavy lifting for you.
